Why retain Dave Caldwell?
|
Dave Caldwell was unofficially demoted when Tom Coughlin was hired. Lets look at Dave Caldwells resume for the Jaguars:
-Hired in 2013 with a plan to "blow it all up." -Released some veterans that should of been retained in said plan. -2013 draft maybe the worst draft in Jaguar History. -Following drafts were just average. For every hit like Allen Robinson he drafted 2 bust. Fowler pending he may have missed on 3 top 5 picks in 4 years. -Free agency was not much better. Softserve Julius Thomas should be gone soon but to be frank there are no stars on the team despite being near the top in cap space the last few years -He Hired Gus Bradley and even seemed to be "all in" with giving him another year. -Highly Responsible for the Jaguars record the last few years. Aside from managing the cap space of a poor team I can't see why he was retained. ![]() We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
He's terrible. One of the worst people to ever work for the Jags, behind only bobblehead Gus and Jean Smiff.

Blake Bortles......YOU'RE FIRED! Dave Caldwell.....YOU'RE FIRED!
His 2015 draft might actually be worse than 2013. One of the worst GMs in the NFL.
Quote:Dave Caldwell was unofficially demoted when Tom Coughlin was hired. Lets look at Dave Caldwells resume for the Jaguars:(Emphasis added) The emphasized line is the main one I have problems with, though not the only one. 2014 draft Bortles Lee Robinson Linder Colvin Telvin Smith Chris Smith Bowanko Storm Johnson Aside from the assertion begging the question of whether a player drafted below the 3rd or 4th round can reasonably be considered to be a "Bust", I have problems with your math. There are not twice as many busts in this draft than successes. I will agree that Bortles is neither in the success or bust category yet. Given Lee's improvement this year, can he be considered a bust? You acknowledge Robinson is a success. Is Linder a bust? Is Telvin Smith? 2015 is still too early to tell, but I don't see the 2:1 ratio there yet, either. To me, Caldwell's biggest blunder was hiring Bradley. Worst to 1st. Curse Reversed!
I think it's just a case of not being able find the right QB.
Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Big Ben, etc. and we're in the playoffs 8 out of the next 10 years. Bortles ain't no super bowl qb. Other than that Caldwell ain't bad. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!

I sometimes question your Sanity as a person ![]() Quote:I sometimes question your Sanity as a person What is you problem with people criticizing Bortles? Until he proves himself, people have every right to complain. I WANT him to succeed but he sure as hell hasn't no matter how many excuses you want to make. ![]()
He was given a sunken ship, he was asked to rebuild, he picked the wrong coach, but I like what he has done as a personnel man with FA and drafts. His demotion warranted? Maybe, but his new boss is a BOSS.
I like DC and what he can do combined with TC. Let's see what happens.
LOVE THEM JAGUARS!
He was retained because super-bowl winning GMs don't grow on trees, and Tom Coughlin isn't going to stick around forever.

I thought we had covered this topic quite a bit already? I believe in recycling but at some point you have to learn when to throw things away.
Quote:He was given a sunken ship, he was asked to rebuild, he picked the wrong coach, but I like what he has done as a personnel man with FA and drafts. He was also given more assets to do that rebuild than any GM in history. No GM has ever had 4 drafts of top 5 picks, and he also had the most cap space in NFL history. With all of those exorbitant resources he's given us maybe 7 or 8 core players. It would be really hard to do worse than that. Quote:He was also given more assets to do that rebuild than any GM in history. Look at the Raiders, they blew up their roster and started from scratch just like we did. Hell, we even had the advantage picking in the top 5 before them in 2014 and 2015. But we ended up with Bortles (bust) and Fowler (bust) and the Raiders ended up with Khalil Mack and Amari Cooper, not to mention Derek Carr. They absolutely blew our rebuild out of the water. Sad!

I made a thread on this and got blasted. Its true, he essentially was demoted. The only reason he still is here is because hes thought of highly around the league. Im assuming the Jags dont want him getting scooped up by another team. Hes an excellent negotiator though and knows how to get a bargain for his buck. Maybe a few years with a hard nosed football guy like Coughlin will get him groomed to run the organization better. More like a business, less like a frat house.

Quote:I am overwhelmed by the nothingness this draft represents. Nearly as bad is the 2010 draft 1- Alualu 3- D'Anthony Smith 5- Larry Hart 5- Austen Lane 6- Deji Karim 6- Scotty McGee Going by colleges, that's Cal, Louisiana Tech, Central Arkansas, Murray State, Southern Illinois, and James Madison. Gene Smith almost exclusively was picking from a weaker talent pool than the 31 other teams in the league.

Quote:Bingo. His biggest problem was the coach, I agree with the majority here on that. However, his drafts looked good on paper.....but they didnt pan out the way we thought they would. Hes got some work to do. But I tell you what, that guy and his budget staff can negotiate a contract. Ive never seen someone work the phones like he does. Guy has every contract team friendly and they can get out of it after a year or so with almost no penalty. I feel like that aspect is so crucial to a front office, the Jags understand that and want no part of that leaving. Coughlin will groom him. He just needs better organization with the team. He hired a players coach and the locker room was like a frat house. This is a business, the ones that understand that and run their teams like that ( patriots, steelers) succeed. Quote:(Emphasis added)This was "dave's team" The team won 3 games last year in it's third year of rebuilding. That speaks for the math. If you add up the win total it's first grade math to do that. ![]()
Quote:Nearly as bad is the 2010 draftPeople love to reference the 2008 draft, but Gene was 10 times worse. People also forget the fact that Shack got us Mathis, Greg Jones, MJD, Lewis, Daryl Smith, Scobee, Manawaui , Wilford, Durant and you can even add a guy like Reggie Nelson, who's been a very good NFL players. Shack wasn't as bad as hes some make him out to be. Id take him over Gene, Shack just screwed the whole thing up with 2008 with putting us in cap hell and bombing the draft. |
