Ridley
|
Ridley has been an enigma to me all season. He is a guy with a lot of talent and does things easily no other receiver we have can. On the flip side there are some little thing he does poorly the other receivers can easily do. I have not charted his catches, but it seems to me he prefers outside the numbers routes like Marvin Harrison did. Harrison was notorious for not wanting to go over the middle or sit down in a zone. I can only remember him catching a couple on the inside. Something to watch.

I can only remember him catching a couple on the inside. Something to watch. The route tree for Ridley has evolved over his time here a little bit. They wanted to fill the X Receiver role with him but the middling completion percentage on sideline routes sort of forced them to mix in some varied routes to get a bit more production from him. (at least - that's how it seemed to play out to me) It's not uncommon for the X to do lots of work well outside the hashes. But the Jags were not getting the success they want there. Utilization of the middle of the field has been a problem for the offense in general in several games. Not just Ridley and the X position. It is not heavily targeted in about half of the games. There are a half dozen reasons why this might not be happening and I don't think anyone outside the building could explain it with any degree of accuracy. Even from the coaches and players - you may get 3 different opinions depending on who you ask as to why it is happening - and it is probably a combination of those things. I think that Trevor's timing being either rushed or pressure moving him out of pocket is a likely culprit for ruining some of the stuff over the middle. There may also be an issue with which areas he is more comfortable throwing into/around traffic. Could also be influenced by the differing coverages and matchups the receivers face week to week. Nonetheless - there are about 4 or 5 games mixed in this season where there were a good number of targets and completions between/around the hashes and all but one of those equated to TL throwing 250+ yards on the day. It would appear we are better when we incorporate that aspect of the offense. Personally - I think that if TL and Ridley could master the timing and placement on some sideline back shoulder throws we could add a dangerous element to our attack. They've done it successfully 2 or 3 times and I'd like to see 5 or 6 more to close out the year. Curiously this is something (I believe) Ridley is struggling with. Useless and dangerous to throw a back shoulder if the receiver keeps going. Last week's failure two sit down in the hole in coverage resulting in a turnover shows the gap. It was clear TL expected it as the ball was out before the break would happen. Hopefully they locked these guys in a room and said get on the same page.

Higgins playing like a number one today. Pretty impressed.

The thing about him is that he turns 25 in January despite this being his 4th year in the NFL. He lacks elite speed, but his size and history with Trevor make him an intriguing free agent target if they don't keep Ridley.
You're crazy if you don't want Trevor to Tee connection. Higgins is a bad man

The change needs to be made to where he is looking for #1 and stop the outside sideline routes as the 1st option. Sent from my SM-T970 using Tapatalk

Great game for Ridley to come out and take over a game. Would be very nice to see.

I keep thinking to myself, are we a vastly different offense with him here vs. what we were the year prior? Right now, I feel the team is missing Kirk way more than we would be missing Ridley.
Mind you, Ridley is a dang technician and runs some great routes, and drawing the flags keeps the O on the field. Question is still to be answered whether the money spent to keep him is better than to either run with what ya got in guys like Washington, Agnew, or another FA, or if you keep him around to try to build on what's started. The fact that the team seems more lost without Kirk on the field than they were killing it with him and Ridley in place gives me pause when it comes time to make an offer. Again, it's that killer instinct. I don't see it. When we are down or need a big play, does Ridley elevate? I don't see it. I can remember Jimmy, though. 3rd and 6, you knew it was going his way and he'd still toast the CB and get you 10. And then he'd remind the CB he's gonna come back and do it again. We need some of that [BLEEP] on the field. (12-18-2023, 10:28 AM)Mikey Wrote: I keep thinking to myself, are we a vastly different offense with him here vs. what we were the year prior? Anyway - he isn't making enough quite impact thus far to warrant anything other than a bargain offer with a team friendly out clause and incentives based on production IMO.
Right now, if I had a choice between Ridley at $10 million per year, and a good interior offensive lineman at $10 million per year, I would take the offensive lineman. If we can't run the ball, then the defense pins their ears back and rushes the passer, which doesn't allow any time for Ridley's great route running to have any effect at all. It's pointless. We have to run the ball better to get Ridley open. Without being able to run the ball, Ridley is just another WR.

You could probably get two upgrades at Guard/Center next year for $10 million per year and we could've protected our Franchise with just a $7 million dollar investment this year. It's inexcusable to me that we didn't fix this problem already. “An empty vessel makes the loudest sound, so they that have the least wit are the greatest babblers.”. - Plato

The downside of that trade, is that, he may not want to come back here in the offseason if given the opportunity to play with six to twelve other teams that are better than we are at the moment. It's frustrating. Now, you're going to have to address it. There's no getting around it. It's clearly impacted Lawrence as a Quarterback this year. He's trying to over compensate, play hero ball and throw his body around out there now and it's catching up to him going into year four. It's funny, but, the Vikings ultimately signed Risner which in turn enabled them to ship Cleveland off to us. We could have had potentially a better player at a fraction at the cost while also pocketing that draft pick going into next year's off season.
