Coaches on the hot seat

Quote:It is not the coach's job to give the player a contract. Therefore, the coach does not bring a player to his team. What is so hard to understand?

I get what you're saying. Think of it like this. The coach lures them in, the GM snags them. Its all team work. But definitely the GM is at the helm on all player signees,

Bill Belichick didn't get the memo.

He has more control in his contract than Jim Harbaugh. Do the Patriots even have a general manager?

The Patriots don't have a General Manager.

Many NFL Head Coaches have a major say in personnel decisions,  even if they don't have final say.

Rex.   The bigger question with the Jets is will Woody Johnson also clean house in their front office?

Regarding Jim Harbaugh,  the 49ers might decide to give another team permission to interview him with the purposes of hoping they hire Harbaugh.   This would let the 49ers off the hook for his 2015 salary under the current terms of his contract with the 49ers.

How is that better than terminating his contract so they pay him nothing?

Now Rex Ryan says he knew during the offseason John Idzik already decided to fire him after the 2014 season to get his own coach. Unfortunately I can't find the article about that. Apparently Idzik thought he was able to publicly announce this will be Ryan's last season without letting him know about it. Ryan asked (paraphrase), "You don't think that information will get to me?" in recent publc comments.

In Atlanta, I don't see how they can fire Mike Smith. The Falcons have won all four division games, so they currently own the tiebreakers for winning the NFCS.

Anyone who thinks Tony Sporano will lose the interim tag and remain head coach can forget it immediately. The Raiders are beyond horrible. He won't even stay as an offensive coordinator.

Quote:Bringing a player to a team means Harbaugh gave Martin a contract, not Baalke.
Do you really believe Baalke would have pursued Martin if Harbaugh hadn't vouched for him? Martin would probably be out of the NFL had Harbaugh not said, "No, Trent, he's good and he's a good kid. Let's bring him in."

That's not how NFL coaching contracts work. They're typically fully-guaranteed, so unless the 49ers were to fire him for cause (violation of his contract), they'd be on the hook for his entire remaining salary if they let him go without another team either assuming the contract or reaching an agreement that frees the 49ers of future obligations to him.

1. When was this, and do you have a link or any kind of proof that the article came from a reputable source? Genuinely asking on this one because that seems like the type of comment that would have been all over the national wire.

2. The Falcons have faded badly the last couple of years. They went a disappointing 4-12 last season, and are currently sitting at 5-7. I agree with you that firing Mike Smith would be a mistake given his performance as recently as 2012 (13-3), but the rumblings that he almost lost his job last year and is coaching for his life this season have been pretty persistent. Winning the NFC South may well be his only chance of staying in Atlanta next year.

Also worth noting: per PFT, the Titans GM and coach are safe, but major changes are expected to the roster. Looks like we can scratch Whisenhunt off the "in danger" list, even though I had a hard time believing he was really there in the first place.

All I am saying is Trent Baalke could have said no. Jim Harbaugh could only ask him if it is OK to bring Jonathan Martin in for a tryout. I never said coaches have nothing to do with where players go when they switch teams as free agents.

NFL.com reported it, so the source is obviously reputable. I never go to other websites for NFL news. He said it after the Bills game in Detroit.

I thought the biggest reason Atlanta sucked last year was they put Julio Jones (foot) on IR. Now that they have him again and are still bad, I can see why he needs to win the division to keep his job.

I never thought Ken Whisenhunt would be one and done. That happened to Mike Mularkey because we also fired Gene Smith. However he may be on a short leash next season.

Its like you take a bunch of really questionable information and then you take a bunch of really dumb assumptions, put them into a centrifuge, and then pour out the result onto the message board.
Coughlin when asked if winning will be a focus: "What the hell else is there? This is nice and dandy, but winning is what all this is about."

Looks like Marc Trestman may not get a third year in Chicago. I found this in an article about Brandon Marshall's broken ribs on NFL.com:

Quote:The bigger question is whether Trestman will be around to coach up this group. A few more losses like the one Chicago had Thursday, and it's hard to imagine Trestman coming back.

If Marc Trestman, Jay Gruden, Greg Roman are all available which would you pursue to replace Fisch as OC?

I think Roman or Gruden would be ok

I'd take Trestman in a heartbeat. Guy is supposed to be a fantastic QB coach.

I'm trying to make myself more informed and less opinionated.

Stop saying whatever stupid thing you're talking about and pay attention to all the interesting things I have to say!

He's just worked miracles with Jay Cutler.

Jay Cutler has always been the same player, and always will be. No one can change or fix him.

He'd rather smoke a cigarette and not give a crap.

I wonder if Woody Johnson fires Rex and lets Idzik choose his own guy or if he just completely cleans house? Idzik hasn't had the opportunity to choose his own head coach.

I agree.

Goes to show the most important quality a QB can have is desire to be great. Without that every effort to grow their performance will fail.

Truth, but he did some pretty good work with Kosar, Scott Mitchell, Plummer, and Gannon. Heck, he even got Gannon the MVP.

Because of the Jets spotty at best personnel decisions the last two seasons,   I think it would be better for them if Woody Johnson cleaned house.   They need to hire a qualified GM who would then hire the HC that best fits the vision of the GM to rebuild the Jets.    Whether Johnson does this remains to be seen.
