It's definitely a make or break year for a couple of young offensive linemen, Brewster and Rackley. With 11 draft picks, and some UDFAs, there are bound to be several new interior linemen. And GMs usually like to keep rookies and see if they can develop. When you are going into your third year, time has run out. IMO, the odds are against Brewster even making the team. Players usually make the jump between their first and second year. A miraculous transformation between year two and three is not the norm.

It would be great if he could step up to the plate and perform but talk is cheap.  I dont think anyone doubts either a draft pick or FA Center wont occur regardless to give him competition in preseason at the position.  I like confidence though.

My hope is that we find a good center for this team to move forward with.  Otherwise, we're putting any rookie QB we draft in immediate peril once he takes the field.  If Brewster can step up and fill that role, great.  If not, hopefully they'll find someone who can.

I've said this same thing to him and Pirkster as they both do it to the point of TMD not even posting in a thread and one of the 2 still bringing him up for pointless bashing. That said i dont have alot of faith in Brewster to take over the center position and i think we will see a 4th rounder natural center take the spot during camps and preseason. Its just setup perfectly for us to use one of the 4th round picks on a C and this draft has a few good ones in that range.

Centers are widely available through the draft.  We have 5 4th +5th round picks.  My guess is one of the guys we like a lot slips to us.  Taking a center earlier would be quite foolish.  There are always centers who are projected to be starters in the NFL who become UDFA every year.  This year, we'll get our pick of the best.

 

I don't think Brewster will start 16 games for us this year, he's too small.

Brewster gets overpowered by under tackles. But he thinks he can hold up against NTs. Thats beyond funny. 

 

His natural position is center. Movement, leverage, technique is actually totally different from guard to center. I watched a lot of Brewster at ohio state. I do think he could use to be a little stronger, and the injuries probably hindered that a little bit. He said he added 10lbs of straight muscle mass this year and the season is still a few months away. I have high hopes and think he can handle the job and handle it well. He has all the motivation in the world right now.

"Holding up" a NT is really all you do to block them in most cases.

 

If a guard is uncovered in our ZBS scheme, then depending on the playside, they'll be doubling to drive the NT and one of the two will work upfield onto a LB.

 

Otherwise, you aren't driving a NT.  You're simply cutting him off from the gap.  Most Cs are outweighed and out-muscled.  That doesn't mean the NT always wins.

 

NTs aren't typically bull rushing, swim moving, etc. to get to the backfield or disrupt the pocket like undertackles, so NTs aren't subjecting the C to the same rag doll treatment undertackles would Gs.  NTs are there acting like wrecking balls eating up space.  Get inside their hands and on their body, and you've accomplished half the mission (you've got the leverage,) then just keep them from moving laterally to the ball carrier.

They took their shot at Mack, and now moving on down the line (no pun intended.)  It's still possible they could bring in a remaining vet after the draft, so I don't expect them to feel like they must find one in the draft.  I don't think they'll force a pick if it isn't there, or otherwise overdraft one because they think he'll be gone before their next pick.

It's my sentiment that If we don't make a move for Martin or choose to sit still in the remote chance he falls (my gut tells me he will probably come off at the bottom half of the first), then I see no reason to go after an interior lineman until the fourth.

 

I see Martin as the only "must have" out of the top C and G candidates.  Otherwise, I'm completely comfortable waiting until the fourth and instead draft impact players in rounds one through three.  There are a lot of Pro Bowl and HOF interior linemen that were drafted fourth or later because they just aren't drafted high.  The ones that are, are instant stars like Martin is expected to be.
