Myers
|
The NFL changed the rules on extra points to make it not automatic anymore. Meyers is not doing any worse than lots of kickers in the league. The league is getting what they want, the team to think about going for two instead of the formally automatic one extra point. Last year there was more missed extra points since 1977. This can be directly attributed to the rule change. The extra point average last year was 94.5 percent league wide compared to its high of 99. It has run around 97% since 1988.
The rule change was made to increase a sense of strategy in extra points, as well as make the play more exciting (for the other team maybe). http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/201...n-decades/ We show less advertisements to registered users. Well lets see:
Myers had 34 field goal attempts last year. His long was 56 yards. 20-29 yards he was 7 0f 7. 30 to 39 yards he was 3 of 4. 40 to 49 yards he was 10 of 11. 50+ yards he was 7 of 12. we had the most attempts of over 50 yards in the league. 50+ yards is in no way a gimme. Most teams had less than 6 attempts at over 50 yards. Last year extra point attempts was 32 extra points made was 29. A good portion of the league missed 2 to 3 extra points last year. http://www.espn.com/nfl/statistics/team/.../year/2016
Here's a snapshot of Myers vs Lambo (who they tried out) Top is Myers, bottom Lambo. Give me Lambo.

IT WAS ALWAYS THE JAGS
I do not see much difference in either Lambo or Myers. It helps define if you breakdown the yardage of kicks.
2015 Field Goals Made Leaders FIELD GOALS EXTRA POINTS RK TEAM FGM FGA PCT LNG 1-19 20-29 30-39 40-49 50+ XPM XPA PCT Jacksonville 26 30 86.7 58 0-0 9-10 8-8 6-8 3-4 32 39 82.1 2016 Jacksonville 27 34 79.4 56 0-0 7-7 3-4 10-11 7-12 29 32 90.6 Now 79.5 percent is low in 2016, but setting him up for failure with 12 attempts over 50 yards needs to be taken into account. Now do I think Myers is an elite kicker, not on your life. But he is average to above average put in the right situations. Now making a 58 yard in 2015 and a 56 yarder in 2016 in no small stat. He does have a leg.

To be honest it's not even the FGs that concern me, it's the PATs. Lambo's % is better. As mentioned before though, it's just how much movement Myers kicks have. They all seem lucky to make it through the uprights. Lambo's kicks just feel safer. Honestly, Myers distance ability is the only thing keeping him employed IMO

Lambo is 21 of 32 (65.6%) on 40+ yard FGs. He's 17 of 24 (70.8%) in the 40 to 49 yard range. Last year he was 0 for 3 on FGs of 50+ yards.
Compare this to Myers... Myers is 27 of 36 (75.0%) on 40+ yards FGs. He's 17 of 20 (85.0%) in the 40 to 49 yard range. Last year he was 7 of 12 (58.3%) of FGs of 50+ yards. Not to be left out I might as well look at Andrew Franks... Franks is 7 of 13 (53.8%) on 40+ yards FGs. He's 5 of 9 (55.6%) in the 40 to 49 yard range. Last year he was 1 of 2 (50.0%) on FGs of 50+ yards. Looking at these comparisons, Myers is much better on the deeper kicks.

At this point, you decide. Do you want a veteran who is money on XP and 40 yarders and isn't likely to make a 55 yarder, or a guy like Myers? I'm taking the former all day every day.
What about Cairo Santos? Wasn't he one of the better kickers before his injury?
I am still geuniinely stumped on why that trash can, um excuse me, Myers is one this roster. It's like the coaches and front office doesn't care that he regularly costs us points.
