I think the hamstring injury really messed him up last year. They also rushed him back out there too soon medically. Ended up getting exposed against the 49ers and Ravens as well because of that. 

Secondary play will benefit the most this season with a rebolstered front seven and a new approach coaching wise. It's the interior that needs to make it's presence felt early and often in 2024. 

Relying heavily on Hamilton, Armstead, Smith and Jefferson to get it done. It's rare we saw the pocket collapse on defense. A lot of Allen and Walker's sacks were hustle and great effort pursuits that were made running around the windmill. 

I also think, again, our schedule and the QB's that we face in 2024 are a little bit more pass rusher friendly than we had in 2023. That schedule last year was absolutely brutal down the stretch. We had a gauntlet of top ranked defenses with quality QB play for what felt like a straight month in a row.

This was made worse as the injuries on offense began to stack up and it clearly reared it's ugly head starting after that Bengals loss.

One thing I'll be following closely is Hamilton. Is he back to his full self? Is that full self good enough to repeat last year's camp? After all Fortner and the other guards were thrown around by everyone. I really don't know what that would say about him or our new look O line.  Gonna be quite interesting.

Agreed. Hamilton I thought had flashed some ability to get into the backfield during the preseason. It was maybe against the Steelers or Dolphins. He looked pretty twitchy. I do agree with dialing down the excitement though when we hear this group is getting after the offensive line group. 

A lot of teams got after this offensive line group last year. And the year before that as well. It's not saying much until they prove and show otherwise. At least with Armstead you know what you're getting when he's healthy. We're hopefully getting Maason Smith at the right time coming off his injury that set him back at LSU.

He was one of the top two or three interior DT's last year that led the nation in QB pressures. That has to be a good sign of his progression and recovery.

He made a ridiculous one handed INT the other day. Easily the best INT of camp and possibly the best play of camp so far.

I think it's definitely between Jones and Him for CB 3 and 4. I've read that the team is very impressed by Jones ability to play inside and outside. It also seems like he has had at least 1 INT every day.

After that it will get very interesting. There is a bunch of guys that will be battling for the remaining 1, or 2 CB spots. Depending on if they decide to keep 5 or 6.

Yes - I definitely have Jones ahead of Prince on my depth chart whether inside or out, but I keep following my gut instinct that says Jones will be the primary nickel with another safety-type player coming in for big nickel packages at times. 
(presumably Savage) 
I suppose how well Campbell takes to playing more man coverage could be a deciding factor on Jones' position, but I doubt they'd have re-upped Tyson if there wasn't a high confidence level in the building that he's acclimating to the new scheme well. 

The whole thing is very interesting to watch as we move into preseason games now that we have new coaches with great resumés installing a new aggressive scheme. Excited to see how it pans out.

The regime change on the defensive side of the ball explains why they added more in this offseason and also sends a message to the prior years' long shots to step up or get cut. 

They entered week one last season with 11 DBs on the 53. 

If that number carries over, we're probably looking at something resembling this:

CB: Campbell, Darby, Jones, Prince, Braswell, Brown
Safety: Cisco, Johnson, Savage, Thomas, and maybe Wingard unless the knee is too serious to wait on availability

I didn't bother to designate nickels as that is still playing out but there are 3 or 4 candidates in there. 

Lots of other possible combos of course, but that's my best guess at the moment

Tre Flowers is vet CB to consider sneaking in, and I have no idea how the new Saftey just added may compete for a spot

Guys like Brown, Junior and Hallett may have a tough row to hoe given they were drafted to suit a different scheme.

Nitpicking here, but the week one official depth chart had 5 safeties and 6 CBs last season. 
(Jenkins, Cisco, Jones, Wingard, A. Johnson) 

Who knows how other position numbers will affect what they keep in the DB group this year and what Nielsen will push for, but 10 is plenty if they go that route.

Regardless - I'm just happy to see quality depth being developed by a more accomplished defensive staff.

Shouldn't really surprise anybody seeing a healthy competition and good mix of secondary players. It's the one area that Baalke has traditionally been above average to solid at as far as scouting and drafting the right players.

Was high on Braswell last year out of Rutgers. Jones is still my favorite overall selection from this class. NYC has the right of it though, he'll be the primary nickel CB, and, depending on the down and distance, he may move in and out of the rotation with Savage or a thumper to tighten up the coverage from the LOS.

Prince was a good pick. His speed alone offers some ability on special teams as a tackler. We need all the help we can get though. The secondary was wonky at times last year. The beefed up interior on defense should give these guys more chances on the football as well if the pressure begins to develop to push the pocket.
