Calls For College President to Resign Because She Rejects Safe Spaces

#41

Quote:Nor is it like anyone is forcing anyone to go to the safe spaces.
Safe spaces are limiting to freedom of speech, my walking away from conversations or speakers I am not interested in hearing is not. The idea is that you have options.

Quote:If it's a safe space only for those choosing to use it, and there is no requirement for anyone to use it, how is it impeding her in any way? Is she opposed to accommodations made for those with views with which she disagrees, even if it's non-compulsory?

Think of it this way.  Why is there a "safe space" to begin with?  Seriously?

If I talk freely with my friends about shooting my legally owned firearms in a public area, should that speech be prohibited?

What about talking about the current President in a positive way?

Is any of that "offensive"?  Yes it is to some that don't accept reality.  However, these snowflakes need to learn that these topics come up in real life.  Don't want to hear it or listen to it?  Then move on.

College isn't supposed to be about "safe spaces" or political correctness.  It's supposed to be about LEARNING and challenging ideas.  It should be a time where kids open up their minds and get new ideas that will eventually lead to innovation and creation.

The concept of a "safe space" is crazy.

So basically people are concerned they may not be able to offend these people in the safe space?

Let's just say there's a transgender student should they be subjected to comments constantly, or would it be nice to be an area they know they can hang out where they aren't hassled by those who worry about their bathroom habits etc?

I sat on a quiet carriage on the train today surely that's political correctness gone mad too.

Critics of safe spaces are often unaware of their genesis. It's been overdone in many cases, but  the original concept wasn't ignoble.

Also seems the most easily offended are those who get triggered by things such as the safe space...

Maybe the real snowflakes are those so easily angered by things that don't remotely affect them be it bathroom habits or safe spaces.

Like many progressive ideas, they mean well, but there are always unintended consequences.

If you want a place where speech you find offensive is banned, go to your house. It's absurd to have a place where these subjective standards of what is offensive are enforced by your University. Who is the arbiter of what is offensive and what is allowed or is it just if anyone is offended by anything, the offending party needs to leave. This becomes pretty silly in a hurry.

Instead of trying to control microaggressions and making sure nobody offends anybody, lighten up, disagree, or don't, but stop trying to use the mechanisms of authority to enforce your world view.

Harrassment is different than being able to bring in speakers who share an opinion outside of the prevailing opinions on a campus.

You won't see anyone advocating for being able to chase down some trans student and yell at them all day. Most states even have laws against it.

Quote:What exactly is a safe space? Is it just a quiet area? What if you accidentally offend someone in this area?

If it is a quiet area to chill out without annoyingly political students around I don't see the issue? Is it a right wing media beat up?

Also surely by rejecting the unis that don't fit her belief system how is she challenging her own beliefs?
That place is called your dorm room, or apartment.

At the same time, I'm not sure their very existence would deter me from attending a university I otherwise favored. I'd like to think I'd want to find out first hand why anyone would want one, their personal experiences, etc. I'm not knocking FBT's daughter, I applaud her for putting thoughts on this into her decision.

As if not knowing someone has ever stopped you from giving your opinion about them.

Clearly, I'm inferring here. It isn't uncommon for colleges with safe spaces to denounce opinions from those that don't typically fall in line with their core values.

Let's say you wanna be a lawyer. Harvard offers you but they have a safe space. Do you really turn down the best Law School in the country because of that?

It wouldn't deter me at all. If you're smart, you aren't going to University for the social justice scene, and nobody in your Engineering program is going to give a crap about that mess and when you graduate and go into your great engineering job, you won't even think about it, all the while the protesters skipping class and living inside of their safe spaces instead of cramming for the differential equations exam are going to be living in mommy and daddy's basement complaining about capitalism.

Don't forget what you go to school for would be my advice to anybody. Big Grin

P.S. Safe Spaces are still an absurd idea. I like absurd ideas on college campuses because that is the place for such experimentation of ideas, but if the safe spaces begin to infringe on the public's right to speak, that's stifling  the free flow of debate and ideas, so I am intolerant of their intolerance.

Can anyone give examples of what they would like to say but wouldn't be allowed to in a so called safe space?

No but I never said I wouldn't go to a school with safe spaces.

Since we're playing hypothetical, if Yale offered and didn't have them then I'd pick Yale.

Pretty much any opinion that doesn't fall in lock step with the ultra left. Relatively liberal professors have been raked over the coals for not falling in line.

And I hate tossing around labels like "conservative" and "liberal" because they get misused. However, that description is about as straight forward as I could be.
