Cann at Center

#41

Lots of talk on Jaguars Today this morning about Linder going to Center.

I don't remember if it was just those guys talking about it or if the team is talking about it.

I think it is the latter though.

Quote:Did you actually watch the Browns and Alex Mack play. He was better then good. The Browns weren't but doesn't mean he wasn't. Don't believe every ESPN or NFL say. Mack was very good still.

Quote:Just draft Ryan Kelly at 38 if he's there and we will be competing with the Cowboys to have the best, cheap, young interior oline for the foreseeable future.

We really don't need to spend 10+ mil/yr on a 30 year old center who wasn't very good last year.

Or sign Richie Incognito to replace Beadles.

Yes I did The Browns and/or Bengals are on TV every week here in Kentucky I saw him a lot.

Quote:Osemele, yes please go for it. He is young and very, very good. Boone or Brooks for a young, good FA G and kick Cann to C is fine too.

I just specifically don't want Mack. He is well past his peak and was already not good last year. Paying a 30 year old 10+ mil/yr to hope that he rebounds to how he played when he was 28 and before he suffered a major broken leg is a fools errand.

Is osemele better than beadles? I think so.

I believe Caldwell mentioned Cann and Linder as possibilties back when. In this thread we a poster brought up Cann. At the conference, a reporter brought up Linder.

So much talk about Linder or Cann going to center. I guess they're srs about it. I wonder if either one is really that much better than Bowanko.

Bowanko came along during the previous OC's attempt to implement the zone blocking scheme and is better suited at center for that style than a power run game.

They are apparently trying to switch him to tackle and make him the swing back up. If the team doesn't sign or draft a dedicated Center, then I imagine all of these guys will get a shot at in the middle during camp.

Whether the LG/C situation is - Cann and Bowanko  - or Osemele and Cann - or Cann and Linder with a new RG  - I don't care as long as we upgrade from Beadles/Wisniewski.

Is Wis in the same mold as Bowanko? More of a ZBS style? He certainly seemed to get no push. I know Beadles certainly is.

I think he's more of a power scheme guy that struggled in the ZBS for a while in Oakland before they changed back to more of a power scheme under Olson.

He's really not terrible at all, I just like the idea of getting better in the interior to help Blake and Yeldon  -  and I think the opportunities are there to make it happen.  Especially when you've got two good young guards that can play center already on your roster.

I wonder if Caldwell just goes for the  third-round-guard-trifecta in the draft and doesn't sign a top tier FA lineman? LOL.

(I think I'd rather see a signing so he can focus on defense in the first three rounds.)

Tretola would be perfect.

Gus mentioned Linder as a possibility at center today.

It's starting to look like the writing is on the wall for Wiz and we'll be addressing either the guard position or center position via FA or draft.

I watched every single down of Browns football. Apparently, you did not. Mack was awful and was just no longer embarrassing by the end of the year.

Word is the Browns are about to sign him to a backloaded 4 year deal. That should tell you Mack is busted goods because the Browns only make terrible decisions. This is from a Browns fan.

I honestly hope neither Cann nor Linder are moved to Center. If the team has to draft a guy in the middle rounds that can perform around the same level as Wiz, then I would hope they do that. Both Cann and Linder look to be guys that can be All-Prol guards, let them keep improving there. If they are as good as they look to be they can carry a lesser center for a season. In that case a year from now the team has one of the best young interior's in the league.

What made him bad? Scheme, skill, etc?

Under Shanny, they ran a ZBS which played to his athleticism. Flip ran a power scheme last year and there was a lot of Mack just getting thrown directly back into the QB.

It wasn't just the physical part either. He would have mental lapses and do goofy stuff like step on the feet of the guards which would result in them being off balance and getting put on their butt. Cam Erving was awful but his situation was made worse by several plays where Mack was supposed to help him out but instead just stepped on his right foot and got him planted by the DT.

It wasn't just recovering from an injury that made him look bad. The mental aspect is what was more agregious. Pressure up the middle is what got McCown half murdered.
