Why retain Dave Caldwell?
|
I'm not sure what Caldwell's job actually is. TC is clearly in charge of personnel and likes to micromanage so he's doing the GM role anyways.
Maybe he likes the way Dave makes him coffee?

Coughlin doesn't replace Caldwell, he replaces Khan.

Quote:Not so sure Khan ever discussed positional personnel. TC is taking control of who's on the team, not the head office. They said Coughlin has final say which to me sounds like he's there to be a tiebreaker. I doubt he's handpicking the roster and the draft picks because no HC or GM would agree to a situation like that. IMO, Khan realized that while he has enough knowledge to make the calls on the business side he doesn't have enough football knowledge to do the same on the football side. So he got someone to do that for him and that person is Coughlin. Quote:He was retained because super-bowl winning GMs don't grow on trees, and Tom Coughlin isn't going to stick around forever.Ding! Ding! Ding!

Caldwell's decision making has been stripped away. All decisions must go through Coughlin for the final decision. DC has been neutered.

Question of the year. It's pretty simple if you think about it. Caldwell is retained basically because Bortles is retained.. As the crew goes so does the captain..
If Bortles fail this year, Caldwell will be shown the door.. It will be the exclamation point of a failed rebuild by an inexperienced GM! And don't think about the contract extension, in the nfl contracts and extensions never hold up.. Just ask Gus! Quote:Question of the year. It's pretty simple if you think about it. He have a gravy job and he making bank.. Caldwell more likely to leave first imo.. Quote:Why would Coughlin leave??Do you plan on working when you are 74 years old? Love of the game can only supersede quality of life and family for so long and he's got millions in the bank. Besides, if Tom does his job well over the next three years and Dave has half the brains I think he does, then Dave will have learned well from his guru and can take the reigns after a few years of tutelage. Quote: Do you plan on working when you are 74 years old? Love of the game can only supersede quality of life and family for so long and he's got millions in the bank. People always talk of quality of life for TC as a senior citizen yet don't take into the perspective that his passion for professional football is what actually keeps him from croaking. This man is indoctrinated into football having spent more time on it than I have been gracing this earth, if you take that away, life suddenly doesn't seem as whole anymore. Maybe that's just how I see it. You make a completely valid point, but I'm sure the man also covets being a full-time grandfather to his grandchildren in his golden years before they are all grown. And he probably is under no small amount of pressure from his family to take it easy at some point. Who knows where he will land on the decision, but it's very conceivable to take a step back at 74 years old. We've seen a number of younger coaches retire, or semi-retire (broadcasting) in the past several years. Guys that were 12-15 years younger than Tom. I know he's not coaching anymore, but to listen to him spell out his intentions and describe the work he's already done in that presser, he's not kicking his feet up and delegating. He's working hard in this new role. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!

He wasn't just retained, he was extended 3 more years. If anything its Khan that's the issue.
Quote:People love to reference the 2008 draft, but Gene was 10 times worse. People also forget the fact that Shack got us Mathis, Greg Jones, MJD, Lewis, Daryl Smith, Scobee, Manawaui , Wilford, Durant and you can even add a guy like Reggie Nelson, who's been a very good NFL players.Justin Durant was a bum.
Quote:Shack wasn't as bad as hes some make him out to be. Id take him over Gene, Shack just screwed the whole thing up with 2008 with putting us in cap hell and bombing the draft.2008 was a terrible draft but that was far from cap hell. Quote:2008 was a terrible draft but that was far from cap hell.Yes, we had cap problems after 2008. Drayton Florence and Jerry Porter were both cut after 1 season after getting massive contracts which were not cap friendly. We had cap problems because of 2008.
Quote:Justin Durant was a bum.Justin Durant is not a bum. He currently is still in the league and is and has been a regular contributor for every team he has played for. He has over 80 career starts, 635 tackles, 4.5 sacks and 3 interceptions and plays every position as a linebacker. Is he an all pro? No, but he has been a solid NFL player who's had a long career. That was a good selection by Shack. Quote:Justin Durant is not a bum. He currently is still in the league and is and has been a regular contributor for every team he has played for.
