Article in New Jersey Paper about Coughlin and Pierre Paul

#41

Quote:To be fair, since everyone wants to point out how Albert never has played a full 16 games, well, Piere Paul has just as bad of a track record injury wise than Albert. Piere Paul is a good player and I would love to have him here. But lets not criticize Albert for his injury record than overlook Piere Paul. Piere Paul has just one season where he played a full 16 games.

With that being said, Piere Paul would be a great fit here and I want the Jags to pursue a DE, which we desperately need. I just want to back Albert and show that its not that uncommon to miss games in a season. The NFL is a violent sport, injuries happen. We traded for a better LT and only gave up a future 7th, sure, hes got some injury concerns, but Piere Paul, who everyone wants has some injury concerns as well.

Let me go fa step further. I have said before the eight games JPP missed in 2015 should not count toward the "injury prone" complaints because his hand damage has nothing to do with football. He also was not on the team until Week 8. Except for team physicals, he stayed away from the Giants. So it is really unfair to include the 2015 season when discussing how injury prone JPP is.

He's from Florida and has always had a home here.

Yeah but once you get the spotlight in NY, it's hard for some players to leave it.

Interesting fact according to Sporting Charts, Fowler Jr. only had 4 fewer hurries than JPP last season. Now, that is in 16 games versus 12. However, JPP has only one full season out of the last 4. He's missed a ton of games. It is safe to assume he's done playing a full season at this point in his career. Based on his sacks, hurried, and stuffs, there's no way he's worth the price he'll command. No freaking way.

I don't want him. How many times have the Jags broken the bank to sign a high profile free agent pass rusher, only to watch each and every one go bust? Kampman. Heyward. Hugh Douglas. Am I missing anyone?

Meanwhile, how did we acquire our best pass rushers? All of them were drafted- in the second round or lower.Brackens Ngakoue. Even McCray. I say go that route.

Get another lockdown CB to play opposite Ramsey, and you'll get a lot more QB hurries/sacks.

Get another great Dline player and you'll get more hurries, sacks and INTs easier+ have better run defense. Work from the front back.

Quote:JPP played with two hands last year. I would like to bring him in for a tryout. Unfortunately he will want more money than his worth because regaining his pre-fireworks form is impossible.

I'd give him a scholarship, with or without a tryout.

Agreed. Don't forget guys like Marcellus Wiley and Marco Coleman from earlier eras. Though far from 'busts', you can add Odrick, Clemons, Big Red as players who were just serviceable at the point in their careers when they became Jags, not difference makers. Our troubles at DE/DPRs (including the lengthy draft misses, Harvey, Groves (RIP), Hawkins, Cordova...) is only rivaled by our WR woes in the JDR regime.
Success is a journey, not a destination.  Go all out Mighty Jaguars.

It looks like JPP played 270 more snaps than Fowler... unless I'm reading that wrong.

Me too.

BTW - with Miller in mind, wasn't it Hayward that came back pretty well from an achilles injury?

JPP only played in 12 games too. He and Vernon were 1-2 in snap percentage when he got hurt. Absurd how much they were forced to play.

I agree with this - I shouldn't have included him. He was playing well for us, until he was injured.

Yeah we need a veteran presence in the DE group. As much as I like Ngakoue and I have faith in Fowler, it'd be good to have some leadership/mentor who's not incredibly lame and Tawdry like Odrick.

As long as we aren't giving JPP a similar deal to what Campbell is going to get, Im fine.

Vernon got 17 mil AAV and 52.5 mil guaranteed. A year later with a higher cap and a lot more teams have a boatload of cap space. If JPP doesn't get franchised Vernon's deal will be the floor for him.
