Article in New Jersey Paper about Coughlin and Pierre Paul
|
Nothing earth shattering, but you may want to read it nonetheless.
http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2017/..._coul.html From the article: The Jaguars have about $71 million in projected cap space now after cutting Odrick, according to Over The Cap. They are also now lacking a starting defensive end, and they have a pass rushing need in general. There's a guy Coughlin knows pretty well -- Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul -- who could help the Jaguars out on both fronts in a few weeks. The Giants appear to be aggressively pursuing Pierre-Paul before free agency begins, and they have the franchise tag at their disposal. If the Giants do not tag Pierre-Paul, though, Jacksonville could pursue him. They will have the financial resources to jack up the price to the point where the Giants (and other teams) might have to back out. It could be a good fit for Pierre-Paul, too. He lives in Florida, he was extremely vocal in his support of Coughlin near the end of the 2015 season, and the Jaguars can give him the big-money, long-term deal he wants, with no state income tax to boot. Who else do the Giants have this off-season though where they might not tag JPP? Seems like they're going to tag him regardless.

Nevertheless, im not a huge fan of Jpp i believe his best years are behind him.. I do feel like if he did land here, he still would be a upgrade at thattposition.. He Definitly is better then Oderick... I just dont see the point in paying a end past his time with one hand, when you can draft a guy like Demarcus Walker in the 2nd and keep on trucking.. Oh and that is if Walker is there, he is a beast i expect him to go soon..
Ain't gonna happen. The Giants would sell their gma to keep that defense together only a year after they built it. They'll franchise him.

It's Marty's fault for placing it at the top of his post right under the link, with nothing else around it. I never read the fluff at the top anyway either, I usually go straight to the good stuff.
Big fan of DeMarcus Walker at the top of RD2 if he's there.

The Jags need a pass rusher, but that's not because they cut Oderick. They still need a left end, Fowler isnt that guy.

Unfortunately he will want more money than his worth because regaining his pre-fireworks form is impossible. Quote:JPP, Melvin Ingram, or bust.I would LOVE Ingram. If he hits the market, he will probably cost the most of any FA.

I have several issues with going after JPP
1.) Scheme fit - I don't know where the Jags are going to put him. He is not that versatile and is best suited for the Giants scheme. the Jaguar need strength and power on the Defensive line and he doesn't represent that for me 2.) Age/health - 28 is still young and he is productive but he seems to be on the downward side of his career and he has not played a full season in three of the last four years and this has less to do with his hand than realized. He has core muscle issues, back issues that are not concerning today but they add up fast sometimes and these type of things indicate a declining player. 3.) Inflated Production - It;s not all about sacks but 5.5 of his 2016 sacks were in back to back games against CLE and Chicago. He does command some double teams occasionally but I wouldn't expect him to come in and the kind of disruption we saw a few years ago from JPP 4.) Contract demand - The market dictates that he will get a 5 or 6 year contract, the FA competition drives guarantees, years and total money, especially for pass rushers. You're going to have to be okay with having to cut him before the contract expires. When you pay for FA's in their late 20's on the downward curve of their talent - you almost need to account for the inevitable dead money. I cannot justify a 5yr/$80 or 6yr/$90 Mil contract for a guy I'm going to get 3 to 4 years from in a scheme that needs youth and power up front. These types of signings are the ones that makes teams look bad when they don't work out. Quote:I would LOVE Ingram.Last I heard it's far more likely that he will hit the market then not. Quote:fingers crossed I'd be thrilled to get JPP here I see what you did there. Thumbs up!

I think JPP is a decent DE, but I wouldn't throw the bank at him. Hes been over 10 sacks twice in 7 years.
