While the Spygate investigation was ongoing during the second week of the 2007 season, Chris Mortensen of ESPN reported that “The league also was reviewing a possible violation into the number of radio frequencies the Patriots were using during Sunday’s game, sources said. The team did not have a satisfactory explanation when asked about <a class="bbc_url" href='http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3014677'>possible irregularities in its communication setup</a>during the game.”

Shortly after Mortensen’s report, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced that he was penalizing the Patriots for taping opposing teams’ signals. But Goodell said nothing about the Patriots violating any rules with respect to headset communications.

I find it a little ridiculous that Patriot homers think just because the NFL controls the headsets, it's impossible to tamper with.

And can't you just see this becoming more and more of a thing. The NFL is going to lose the privacy that they have enjoyed previously and are going to experience more and more scrutiny due to their lack of transparency in dealing with things like this.

This isn't 1950. We are dealing with digital systems. For a radio signal to do something like that would mean they are either using antiquated equipment or someone is tampering with the signal.

 

It doesn't take a 1950's era analog radio system to run into problems.  What's the receiver architecture on the back end?  I don't know that information, and from what I've been able to dig online it's a Telex-based system for the coach-to-coach communications.  How does the Telex communicate with the "Bose" headsets on the sidelines (I'm not sure if they're actually Bose architecture or simply a 3rd party with Bose branding like what was done for the Motorola headsets)? I don't recall if the headsets are connected via physical layer to the communications box on the sidelines.  I'm pretty sure the Telex system is encrypted (and also could be hardwired, I'm not sure) and digital, as you suggest. I'm still trying to decide exactly how the power infrastructure issue released by the NFL's statement would cause this problem.  I've had issues with system power carrying external signals when a grounding wire was improperly shielded.  Maybe something like this happened with the equipment used by the Steelers?

 

I mean, at the end of the day this narrative that these headset issues are only run into when teams visit Foxborough is clearly media marketing to get page views.  Just a cursory internet search brings up:

And the media strategy is clearly working; I've stopped my comfortable lurking to put stupid words to a stupid issue that, at the end of the day, is completely irrelevant since the Patriots completely outplayed the Steelers last night...and I don't even care about either team!  Stupid, stupid, stupid...and if I wasn't stupid myself, I'd just ignore this 'issue' as moot and move on.

Exactly. I'm sure its happened before at least once with every team but with the Patriots it seems to be a recurring issue. When an opposing coach can accurately predict when it will happen (during a productive drive for the opposing team) thats a serious issue. If its faulty equipment, (doubtful) how many more complaints do you have to get before deciding to fix it instead of continuing to use the same equipment?

No doubt lots of conspiracy nuts and armchair electrical engineers are going to cry foul, but anyone who has played around with radio in the 2.4 ghz range (which I would assume the NFL system must operate around) knows how easy it is to get interference during anomalous power events.

 

I'd say I'm surprised the NFL doesn't have a more sophisticated wireless architecture, but that would be a lie.

This will make the rest of the Patriots home games really, really interesting. Do teams continue to have problems, knowing the spotlight is now focused on the issue? Or does it magically stop? The latter scenario would look even more suspicious. I'm actually interested in seeing this thing play out.

While it could be the Patriots* organization doing it, I suspect it's a Pats* fan jamming the opponent's communication equipment. RF bought online illegally or if one has the know-how built.

There is a clear pattern.  One team even invited NFL officials to listen in.  The team predicted when the radios would go out (during an offensive drive when the team was having success against the Pats D).  The radio went out exactly when the team official predicted it would. 

 

The Pats tamper with radios during a few critical drives each game.  If the officials also kill the radios on the Patriots sideline, what does it matter?  The critical radio link is to the offensive QB.  The problem always seems to remedy itself when the Pats go on offense.

If true and without having knowledge about radio/headset signals, it seems the NFL IS dropping the ball. In 2015 can they really not figure out a way to eliminate this issue when the league is making billions of dollars?


Also, be interested to see if they have a frequency of radios going out for each team.
