2014 World Cup Discussion Thread

Quote:I'm kind of glad we finished second in the group because being on this half of the bracket gives us an extra day of rest. It will also give us more rest for the 2020 World Cup. But of course England will have even more rest for the 2020 World Cup because we went out in the group stages.
Quote:Predictions.. Who will be our quarter finalists ?Same for me, except I have Costa Rica winning over Greece.
Quote:I think that seems to be an undertone in most of the articles and commentary I have seen. Soccer is not an American sport like baseball!! They sort of leave out that neither are golf or basketball.Basketball is actually the only sport that was developed solely in North America. Hockey, football and baseball all have their roots in sports first played in Europe but basketball was invented in the USA. I know you were aiming more for a "where is the sport currently played" kind of thing but I thought it was an interesting something to share.

Also, it seems quite a few Jags players are following the World Cup. I've seen Bowanko, Beadles, Colvin, Pasztor and others all tweeting about USA matches (and some of the other games too).
And from the other side, I read somewhere that England's Daniel Sturridge was supporting the Jaguars - maybe Carlo can tell us more ?
BTW Gratz to azianidiot for wrecking that world cup pick em game.... nice work man... i thought i had u in the beginning but u ran away with it in the end.
Quote:You kind of just made my point. All I stated was "soccer fans are unreasonably defensive about soccer". I didn't even say anything bad about your beloved sport , as I am very much enjoying the World Cup. However, the little I said was enough to illicit a "from the bottom of your broken heart" response. Chill out and quit being so defensive. That's where you're wrong. Soccer is not my beloved sport, as I said I much prefer football! I hate the flopping and I've seen more than my fair share of awful boring games (being a Birmingham City season ticket holder). I'm just defending a sport which is being attacked by those who refuse to believe that it's an emerging sport in your country, which people feel the need to belittle as they don't like/understand it. I've not seen anywhere about Danny supporting the Jags, but last time we spoke I was 17...
Define "emerging", please.
On another forum I frequent, we had a very similar thread where LaCrosse fanboys were saying LaCrosse is emerging and will catch the other big sports in the country. There were LaCrosse fans, just like you, defending the sport to no end and citing articles showing LaCrosse's growth over the past few years. Do you think LaCrosse and Soccer will both be top 4 sports soon? Or maybe both groups of fans are letting their bias get in the way.... Quote:Define "emerging", please. emerge[ ih-murj ] verb (used without object) [e·merged, e·merg·ing.] 1. to come forth into view or notice, as from concealment or obscurity What bias? I never said soccer will break "the top 4" in the US, nor do I care. But why must it break the top 4 to be relevant? Quote:That's where you're wrong. I hate the flopping and I've seen more than my fair share of awful boring games (being a Birmingham City season ticket holder).ive come to realize people just kinda say stuff cause they heard someone say something before... they cant possibly have real views on the sport because they never watched it... it was like when i played football and soccer in school, my football coach would jokingly give me crap about playing soccer cause toward the end of the year the schedules would conflict alittle with soccer starting in winter an football winding down by about that time... as a result i had buddies who heard the coach and would say some of the same crap just cause they heard our coach sayin stuff... it wasnt like they knew at all what they were sayin, they were just sayin crap for the sake of given me crap. Quote:Basketball is actually the only sport that was developed solely in North America. Hockey, football and baseball all have their roots in sports first played in Europe but basketball was invented in the USA. What's your point here? Baseball was invented in America. The idea for the game came from Cricket, sure, but the two games are vastly different. Baseball is not a variation of Cricket, it is a different sport. Just take a look at the difference in scoring and you'll no longer credit the invention of baseball to Cricket inventors.
Quote:emerge[ ih-murj ] Ok, then I misunderstood you. I thought you meant emerging like it would ever be as relevant as the big 4 sports in the country. The only sport is has a chance of passing is hockey, but soccer will never "emerge" to the level of basketball, football, or baseball. As long as we agree that soccer is an afterthought compared to those sports, then I see what you're saying.

Quote:Baseball stems from rounders. Not cricket. It stems from both, but is vastly different from both. Again, baseball was invented in the United States. The fact that the idea came from a game in England played without gloves, with an 18 inch stick, where the batter must run whether they hit the ball or not does not change that fact. Does the first person to ever kick a ball get credit for inventing soccer? No. Likewise, the inventors of Rounders and/or Cricket do not get credit for the invention of baseball. Baseball is not Rounders or Cricket. Quote:Ok, then I misunderstood you. I thought you meant emerging like it would ever be as relevant as the big 4 sports in the country. As long as we agree that soccer is an afterthought compared to those sports, then I see what you're saying. I disagree on some of this. If you are keeping the parameters at only 4 sports can be big, then any sport outside of the top 4 will have a tough time replacing them. But there is no reason why there cannot be a Big 5,6,7, etc. MLB and NHL are regional sports, NBA and NFL are national sports. Our domestic league, MLS, is also a regional sport. Really there is only the Big 2 (or Big 3 if you count CFB). The rest are regional sports, which means MLS can share the same tier of relevancy. |
