Is Cecil Shorts III gone?

#61

Quote:I think we all know he played below expectations this season. He's also battled injuries. That said, be careful what you wish for. Most wide receivers don't really hit their full stride until year 3. If we're relying on all 2nd year WRs in ARob, Lee, and Hurns...I think we'll be in line for most of the same next season. Keep in mind that Lee and Hurns both have the case of the dropsies, and its not like Lee doesn't have an injury history either.
This is why I pray we get Blackmon back.

I think the team adds a veteran receiver in free agency. Not a top dollar guy but someone with experience. Maybe a guy like Nate Washington, whose best years are behind him but would be a solid receiver for this team.

I can't say for certain but I think his injuries (concussions & hamstring) got the best of him and he became gun shy out there.

See, I think this is a case of "greener on the other side". Despite missing games and his case of the dropsies, Cecil has still outperformed Nate Washington. He'll be cheaper probably, but from a production stand point I don't know how much we can rely on it.

He hasn't outperformed Washington.

Gus just said in reference to Blackmon possibly coming back "if he comes back it'd be a luxury, but we feel good about the 3 guys we have coming back."  That says a lot.

He hasn't?

Shorts has more receptions, more yards, more TDs, less games.

Washington had more yards and TDs this year.

Because he's a better receiver.

He had just less than 100 yards more and 1 more TD in 3 more games than Cecil. I don't know that he's much better. Cheaper? Sure. But I don't know that he's better (he's also 31/32...so the WR wall could hit any moment now)

It didnt seem promising when watching the interview with GM Dave Caldwell today state that the team has no real #1 WR.

The two teams with home field advantage in the playoffs don't have "number one receivers" either.

Funny how last off-season there was a lot of talk about trying to sign Cecil to a contract extension.  Apparently he wanted more money than was being offered...  Guess he should have taken the deal when he had a chance.

Yea, but one has one of the best QB's of all time, and the other has arguably has one of the best defenses of all time. A number receiver isn't a must to win a SB but sure makes it a lot easier.

Trust me, I would take one on this team.

But they are not easy to find. I have my doubts about Amari Cooper being that guy too.

I hear ya, I have my doubts as well. I'm of the belief you don't draft a receiver in the top 5 unless he's an AJ Green, Julio Jones, Megatron type talent, Cooper simply doesn't compare favorably to those guys. The only receiver in this draft (if he declares) that does is Dorial Green-Beckham; he's a complete head case so I don't see him even being on the Jaguars draft board.

We have a #1 WR. He just got out of rehab. I have no doubt that when hes back he will claim that spot.
