Definitely not as bad. I just wouldn't be willing to draft a guy with shaky pocket presence because I'm not convinced it can be fixed.


I guess Gabbert did jmprove some so maybe Garappolo can too.

My goodness. I'm not hating just to hate. I don't like him as a prospect and given my reasons. You obviously think differently.


Lol I'm a slouch now? I've seen every game just like many many others and he bails early far too often. Sure he will sit in the cleanest of clean pockets sometimes but I haven't seen him make plays from a muddied pocket.


If you are evaluating a qb based on competition then you're doing it wrong. The characteristics are prevalent regardless of competition.

 

I like his game and I just don't like when people are lazy and claim idiocy like he has a clean pocket or "best line in college". What top rated QB played with a downright poor line? Did Winston not have the best O-line in college football and won the National Title. Do we need to put an asterisk next to it because he benefited from it? I thinks the argument is weak.

When you have 1st rounders and another 2 potential high round draft picks on your o-line, id say you have a pretty good offensive line

You look at most of the qb failures in the NFL, they had pristine protection on the line so their pocket presence was rarely tested in college.

 

Manziel runs out of clean pockets, runs into his own lineman. Just in general, very chaotic

Just because he had the one signature highlight play against duke in the bowl game does not make it the norm. He scrambles when needed. When the O-line collapses is usually when he will evade the rush. Theres a difference between evading the rush and running away from air a la Gabbert.

There are times when he is better suited stepping up in the pocket and maneuvering the rush and creating his throwing lane, instead he runs out of the pocket.

True, however he does have the unique ability to avoid the rush reestablish a new area and then launch down field. I guess for some it's too risky to pick at #3. But honestly its hard to deny him the fact that he moves the chains and is a play maker. That's something the Jags need.

Some will but teams are going to force Manziel to win from the pocket and I don't think he can.

 

In college, Manziel could outrun all the DL and most LBs so teams had to try and keep him in the pocket by not over-rushing and playing contain thus giving him a ton of time.

 

In the NFL, the DEs will have their ears pinned back and not playing contain and NFL DEs will be able to run just as fast as Manziel as will NFL LBs.

I think Manziel's upside is really high but his floor is the lowest as well. I'd be willing to gamble on him. But, I would be cool with either Bridgewater or Bortles as well. Teddy probably would be able to start pretty quick. Personally, I'd take Watkins if he is there. I think he'll be BAP.

Good article, but his philosophy is making an exception the rules.. and I totally get where he is coming from.. The biggest failure in scouting is seeing what you want to see in controlled environments.. The same can be said of Manziel, Bortles and Bridgewater

Carr is a perfect example of what he is talking about, you can see a great NFL QB when you look at him, but he probably has an 80% chance of being a flop
