Even if Garrard needed disc surgery and was placed on the IR, he would still be in the organization and on the sideline feeding Gabbert his knowledge of the game and the QB position.

 

The move to dump Garrard a week before the season started was regarded as a ridiculously stupid move by a sleezy, low class GM and cheap NFL owner. The NFL community was livid at the franchise for such a disgusting, disgraceful front office. It remains outrageous to this day.

I think you're confusing the role of coaches and players. Players play, coaches coach. Having a player on the roster who can not play and will most likely never play again is a bad idea.

I would love to see what David Shula could do with this kid.  And Shula's not the only QB guru in the league.  There will be more than one team willing to take a shot at him.

We will just have to disagree about him being in the league in more than 2 years. I do agree that he got even worse, but the thing was, he never was good. His badness was masked by the coaches telling him to just 'don't make mistakes.'  Gus let him actually show what he had, and it wasn't good. He doesn't have the intangibles, the decision-making, whatever you want to call it. Do I think that timeline could get longer if Gabb's went to someone like Andy Reid? Sure, the man works miracles. But just about anybody else, and yeah, hes gone in 2 years.
