I picked the Netherlands, but I can't say I am upset that I was wrong. Not at all.

Normally, I'd be rooting for Germany here. But, to see Argentina win a World Title on Brazilian soil, it would really be rubbing it in.

Pulling for Argentina.

I'd probably support Germany, but It would be a shame if a talent like Messi never wins the sports biggest trophy. So Argentina for me too

I was rooting for Netherlands to get their first Finals win. Oh well. I guess I'll root for Germany now. Though I don't really mind if Argentina wins instead. Should be a great match.

i know this is prolly just a journalist throwing crap at the wall and hoping it sticks but i wouldn't be stoked if this was true... brazil has apparently contacted jose morinho about the national team job... seeing how my favorite team is chelsea, i would not want something like this to happen... cant they get pele or someone to do it, that team is garbage i hope jose can see that it would be a colossal waste of time.

nah... messi is phenom, but i like the german side... there back four are amazing with hummles as the anchor, their mid full is jammed full of stars like ozil, kroos, Schweinsteiger, and that toung kid from bayern who i dont think has even gotten much playing time... point is there are plenty of people on that roster who deserve a world cup... i was kinda upset it wasnt germany vs netherlands but honestly, the more i think about it the more im convinced this will be an an amazing world cup and actually show definitively who is the best in the world... you have the best from south america and the best from europe colliding on the biggest stage possible, should be one hell of a game... minus ronaldo, i i think we pretty much have the best players in the game today all on the pitch at once.

I want Germany to beat the country that harbored their Nazi war criminals. Brazil, Chile and Uruguay would have fit, as well.

What? Too soon?

A third place game isn't worth playing if your not going to play a true second game.

True second. Done a lot in wrestling. In this case the Netherlands would play Argentina if Germany beats Argentina. To see who was the true second place team. I think if they are going to play he two losers of the semis for third and fourth, you should play for true second.

Well it's not done a lot in other sports. If you start doing that you might as well start having a complete double elimination tournament. Other global events (ie. Olympics, World University Games, Little League World Series, etc.) don't have a "true 2nd place" game.

I believe the point is to determine the winner, not rank the top four in order.

That and the purpose of the third place match is to make the FIFA a few extra million dollars.

Good first half. You have to think Messi is going to cash in on one of those breaks sooner or later. He's faster than anyone on Germany's defense.

He is, but he wasn't faster than the whole of the German defense. Argentina's game plan was to play defense with 10 men and hope Messi does something great up front. Works great against Nigeria and Iran, not so much against teams like Germany and technically the Netherlands as well.

Best team won. And without the need for penalties. So I think that was the result we wanted

I did a quick tally of European teams versus American teams in the knockout stage:

Euro won 5, lost 2 with 3 draws (winning only 1 PK series). Scored 16 goals, conceded 6 goals.

Make of that what you will.

It played out as you say, superior defense won out. Poor attempt on that last free kick by Messi, too.

The baby seal clubbing Germany gave Brazil skews those numbers quite a bit, but the European teams were more impressive, imo.
