Roster Prediction Time

Moncrief
Lee
Cole
Westbrook
Chark
Greene

Greene's spot is clearly still a battle between four players, but I think he ends up winning it with Lazard going to the PS.
Not sure if Mickens is eligible for PS.
Wynn will likely be a waive.
I don't think they will try to trade any of these players.

Mickens would be claimed for sure. There are a lot of teams that could use a great punt returner and coverage guy.

I do not disagree. It would be tough letting him go. Super-shifty returner with more than adequate WR skills.
He's still got a shot of course, and one more muffed punt by Greene could open the door again. Saturday is a big game for those four receivers at the bottom of the chart.

If trading Moncrief could bring us a solid backup LT though, what's the harm? We'd be using a position of strength to improve a position of need. I was just posing a question if this was possible. Would it have any adverse effect on the salary cap to trade him? I didn't know if it was an option. We could just as easily substitute Rashad Greene's name in the trade scenario, but I believe Moncrief could bring us a better player in return. We have solid WR depth, but backup LT Wells has looked terrible in the preseason and I haven't been impressed by Poehls either. Richardson just got cleared to play from his shoulder injury, so maybe we'll finally get a look at him in the next game. I have high hopes for him that he can be the Swing Tackle we so desperately need, but until we know for sure, the position is very unstable.
Moncrief's current cap hit for this year is $9.6m.  In a trade scenario, Moncrief got paid a $4m signing bonus, that the Jags would have to retain.  The $5.6m base salary is guaranteed, and would be responsible for the team he is playing for who acquired his contract (in a trade scenario, not the Jags).  So, if the Jags trade Moncrief before the first game, the Jags would save $5.6m against this year's cap.  However, this savings would be lessened by the contract of the LT they acquired in trade.

Thanks. I'm not good at math and I was just wondering what the breakdown would be. So far, the only OT I have heard was on the bubble was Chaz Green of Dallas who is no better than what we have at the backup position and Donald Penn of the Raiders, if he doesn't agree to take a pay cut. I think he would be looking for a starting gig anyway and his asking price would be too much.

At this point, I feel like Lazard is already out of the running for a potential roster spot but has already been inked in for a PS spot.

There are 5 WRs that all seem to agree are virtually a lock for the roster. The 6th WR spot, if kept, would have a primary role as a special teams contributor. In my opinion, Mickens is a more valuable special teams guy over Greene. I hate to see a good WR not on the team, but the numbers just don't work for Greene this year.

In my opinion, Mickens propensity to fumble the football is being obfuscated. We were calling on the Jaguars to cut the guy, no?

I'll leave it to Mickens fans to honestly reveal just how many fumbles he had last season.

Mickens fumbled the ball 4 times in 29 returns.

And so begins the wave of flip-flopping on Moncrief.

It's not flip-flopping. Geez, you don't think the coaches change their minds in the preseason, as they get to see players more in game situations? Injuries to players also open up roster spots as well. If Marrone changed his mind about a player as the preseason progressed, because he got to see a larger resume' from that guy, while at the same time, an unexpected roster spot opened up, is he a flip-flopper? I changed my mind about Rashad Greene, Shane Wynn, Michael Bennett and Cody Davis as well. Why not criticize those picks? Isn't the preseason supposed to be used to evaluate players in game situations, in order to put together the best possible team? The more playing time guys get, the more information can be gathered and that's what I've been doing. Was I supposed to stick with my original guess after just one preseason game? That would be dumb. I'm not even guaranteeing this will be my final roster guess. We have another game to go and a lot of things can still happen.

I'm just having some fun at your expense.

You said he had hands of stone in this thread. And that he had peaked and wasn't going to improve at 25 years old.  Still believe that?
In six quarters of football this preseason he's hauled in 8 catches for 106 yards and I don't recall a drop.

He's about to have a major opportunity to step up to the plate, and I think he'll do well.

I think we'll see Moncrief at X, Cole at Y, and Westbrook at Z in week one with plenty of the variations that Hackett has shown a willingness to sprinkle in.

Yes. I believe he will be our 3rd best receiver in terms of stats, at best. That's only if D.J. Chark doesn't pass him up before the season is over. That doesn't mean he won't contribute though. We don't need him to be a star, we just need him to move the chains when given the opportunities. If I turn out to be wrong, that would be great. I hope I am and I'll admit it. The Lee injury definitely gives Moncrief more of an opportunity to make an impact. Let's hope he takes advantage of it and has a great year.

With Lee gone I suspect they only carry 5 WRs meaning no Mickens. Instead, I see them carrying Koyack as their 4th TE.

Also, I'm not so sure about Tony Adams making it after a really ugly whiff in the last game. I'm not sure, though, who might replace him among their OLs. They seem to like Poehls at RT, but they're probably looking at interior help.

On defense, I'm going flip-flop on Blair Brown by saying he won't make the team. This is a sight shocker to me as I thought for sure he would play in the Falcons game, but he didn't. Not only did Motuapuaka and Payne play 2nd string, but when it came to the 3rd string they played DeLuca and King instead of Brown. I guess Brown is simply on his way out despite my previous assumption that our former draft pick was safe. I now see them hanging onto Matuapuaka instead.

I agree with your DBs except that see them only carrying 5 CBs with Meeks making the PS. In this last game, they didn't even play Meeks while bringing on Seamster and Canady at CB late in the fourth quarter. For that final spot roster spot on defense, I'm thinking they either keep LB Manase Hungalu (their backup SLB this preseason while McCray played DE), DT Michael Bennett (they still really like him), or CB Jalen Myrick (super-fast ST specialist).

I don't see any way Poehls makes the team. He only has experience on the right side and we spent a fairly high draft pick on Richardson, who only has experience at RT. Poehls has been inconsistent in his play and although Richardson only played 1 game so far, he looked like the most consistent O-Linemen of the guys he was with. Unless Poehls kicks inside to OG or shows he can back up Robinson at LT in the next game, I just don't see him making the team.

I definitely see Brown making the team as a backup MLB.

I don't believe that both Meeks and Herndon will make the final 53. Herndon will likely go to the practice squad. Jarrod Wilson has been very solid on special teams and I doubt he gets cut.

I see this as a possibility too, hence the mention of it, albeit slightly different than your suggestion.
I just have a hunch they might roll with Herndon as he got lots of attention at his pro-day from a number of NFL teams. I have a feeling he'd not clear waivers to make the PS.
The Harrison addition also makes it tougher to keep Wilson.  I like Wilson's contribution though. Tough call.

If they part with one of Meeks or Herndon I feel its Meeks unless he turns the tide tomorrow in Tampa.
They've both had some good PBUs this preseason.

What has Davis shown to make you think he deserves/earned a spot over Wilson, Meeks or Herndon?

I'd rather keep young guys with upside over somebody who was hit his peak and isn't anywhere close to even being average.
