People are going to be sorely disappointed by what transpires this off season with free agency because the mindset the front office is going to follow will be less on throwing huge contracts out there for multiple players, and more about signing the right free agents to fill roles on this team.  I don't expect to see them over-do it in free agency.  I think ultimately, they're going to find ways to continue to manage the cap in a way that allows them to carry money forward, using extensions for players with incentives that aren't likely to be earned and other loopholes to allow them to continue to have one of the healthiest caps in the league while building through the draft.

 

Caldwell has been pretty clear that they'll be aggressive, but they won't overspend in free agency.  Suh would be a guy that you'd have to overspend to get.  In the end, all of this is going to be a moot point because I think the Lions find a way to get a deal done to keep him. 

 

 

 

Doesn't this presume the "right" free agents will not command "huge" contracts?

 

Caldwell has been clear the team will be aggressive in free agency.

 

 

"I think for us it’s where we have needs and where those players fit in our needs. I think if there was a big-time player there that we have a need for we’ll be aggressive for it," Caldwell said when asked if it's better to target three big-time free agents or six mid-tier. "If there’s a couple of mid-line players like we did over the last couple of years we’ll do that to gain some depth and be bridges until we can fill those through the draft."

Translation: If there is a guy the team really wants, they'll spend the money.

I think the disappointment is more likely to come where guys we hope will be on the market are taken off before free agency begins, rather than unexpected frugality from the Jaguars brass.

Name the last great defenvise lineman to come out of Florida in recent years. Floyd in Minnesotta? He hasn't done anything note worthy. We took Derrick Harvey, and he set us back two years. No thanks.

 

As for Suh, again, no thanks. Huge price tag, huge liability. He's a headcase that cost his team too many penalities. You can play nasty and physical and not be a dirt bag about it. John Randle and Kevin Greene did it for years.

Money. The salary cap is for real. Between Stafford and Megatron, their just isn't enough cap space for a DT. 

 

The salary cap was created for these situations. A team such a the jags have the ability to acquire a dominate players and compete with the rest of the league
