Myles Jack proved he can play outside

Quote:Poz has made some big interceptions too, yet we all acknowledge he is terrible in pass defense. Telvin's the same way. A few splash plays here and there doesn't erase a body of work that is negative in pass protection the vast majority of the time.

The difference is that I don't remember this wide spread panning of Telvin's ability in pass coverage on this board before 8/11. If anything, while I know it's only one aspect of the passing game, there has been quite a bit of praise of Telvin's effectiveness in the screen game and, during his top 100 video, it's mention that he has the speed to run with WRs, followed by a clip of him shutting down Mike Evans IIRC. When we drafted Jack, no one on this board was saying "Finally, we can take Telvin Smith off the field on passing downs, he is so horrible in pass coverage." Several people were saying it about Poz.

Probably not as widespread as it is now, but there were plenty of us saying he is a liability in coverage since last year.

Another more likely wrinkle that we haven't seen in pre-season is playing out of a 3-4 on rare occasions to get the best players on the field

Fowler Jackson Marks

Smith Poz Jack Skuta

Skuta instead of Poz... Poz kick over to OTTO and let yung beau man the middle. Keep Smith at WILL.

Quote:Its not like you lose too much size or tackling either. Jack and Ramsey both can hit hard. Might struggle to get off blocks but I can live with that.
Ramsey nor Jack has displayed the inability to shed blockers. Both have done a good job of shedding blockers thus far...

Quote:The OTTO LB has to engage blockers on a regular basis.

Jack may be able to physically handle engaging blockers, but having to physically engage blockers limits the opportunities to utilize his speed which his greatest asset.

Jack is his most dangerous playing in space. To put him at a position that does not allow him to do that would be under utilizing him.
MJ44 has proven that he can shed blockers and still make tackles during the process...

It's not about shedding blockers at the OTTO, it's about taking on  a tackle or a TE one on one on a consistent basis.

Unlike the other LB positions, the OTTO often is matching heads up with a blocker much like a defensive linesman. This isn't a free roaming position like the other LB positions. That is why Jack's skill set would be wasted at the position and why he isn't getting reps there.

Quote:I've been quietly calling for that for a while. Arizona seems to make it work - really well. We have the personnel for it.

I just started reading this thread but I had to respond to this.  I also like the idea of going nickle on passing downs.  But I don't think Gus would be willing to do this...  It seems like we're stuck with the 3 man soft zone on passing downs that kills us.

But I agree.  For 3 years now, our LB's are getting smoking in the passing game.  Maybe switch things up, you know adjust to your personell would be a good thing.

Typical delusional jaguar fan base, some things never change. We drafted a new stud LB but he plays a silar position as our other rising star LB, lets just bench the old one or trade him just cuz.. worked out when we drafted joke and replaced monroe right? Naw dont bench the 2 slow plodders in poz and skuta.. bench our other rising stud just cuz ideally jack plays that position best..

What a joke, sad but it seems gus has the same mental aptitude as a lot of this fanbase

Trying to find a way to get 2 talented players on the field at the same position is an amazing problem to have.

Jack's talent would be largely wasted at Otto where someone as lunch pail as Skuta can get it done.

Playing Jack at WLB on base sets and Telvin/Jack together on nickel might just be amazing.

Remember- this D ran 60% nickel in some games last year.

It's not like Telvin would just ride pine.

This....but without the name calling.

No way I'm benching Telvin. And no way Skuta sees the field when I have Myles Jack.

Put Telvin at Strong Safety.

This fan base hates Telvin Smith I guess. I had no idea he was such an awful player, I must be really really blind. Cut him now.

You and me both. Last year he was the "man" on defense around here, now he's the WOAT.

Yea apparently Skuta is the man. Unless bobblehead Gus puts him on the bench, then the Applebee's crew will say he sucked all along.

Yep, he has to be a pro bowl, top 100 overall player or he's cut worthy. He definitely can't fit in a massive chasm somewhere inbetween those two poles.

He's Top 100, that's bad. We don't want those types of players, cut him now.

Top 53 only

Oh yeah that godawful list rears it's ugly head again. A player who is a significant negative in the most important part of the game is not a top 100 player, sorry.
