Bortles will become the best QB of this franchise

Quote:Sorry my numbers were off.

2006 Rams

6th in total offense

3rd passing offense

4000 yard passer, two 1000 yard receivers, and a 1500 yard rusher.

Bulger, Holt, and Bruce were all pro bowl selections. Burger was a pro bowl MVP but not under Olson, sorry not sure where I got the MVP title from. Blake has more talent than Bulger IMO.

2010 Bucs

Josh freakin Freeman was sixth in the NFL passer rating under Olson. And the 3rd best offense in team history.

So my numbers were admittedly off. Sorry about that. But still, when he has talent to coach, he puts out one heck of an offense. And works wonders with QBs. Carr already looks a bit lost without him.

Just for the heck of it, here's my quip about his time with the '06 Rams...

In 2006 with the Lions starting over, it would seem the emphasis on the vertical pass caught the eye of the newly signed Rams Head Coach Scott Linehan who hired Olson as his OC. The Rams finished sixth in yards in 2006 as Marc Bulger had his best season as a pro starting every game while backups Gus Frerotte and Ryan Fitzpatrick, in his second NFL season, warmed the bench. For the season Bulger completed an impressive 63 percent of his passes for over 4,300 yards along with 24 TDs and 8 INTs. Linehan started out the season calling the plays, however, after ten games with the team 4-6 after reeling off five straight losses, he handed the play calling duties over to Greg Olsen citing lack of production. With Greg calling the plays, the Rams finished 4-2 as Bulger had three games with over 300 yards including a 4 TD win where he had a 10.2 YPA and a 134.5 QB rating.

It's kind of amazing how many teams he has been with considering the success he has had.

I am really happy with the improvement in the Offensive line that Doug Marrone has made and that too has helped Olson with improving Bortles QB play.

The running game is still in need of improvement, and they have to address LT Luke's inability to perform at a starting NFL LT level as the season approaches...

As far as preseason goes thus far with the starter's playing time out of the way the Jaguars shockingly have the 4th rated passing offense in the league to this point. I think it has some credibility to it as the Saints, Eagles and Packers are 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively. Bortles has completed 65% of his passes for almost 12 yards per completion which is astronomical. The way I see it we don't NEED Thomas and can get along until he's 100% and then he will just make us that much more dangerous. Hopefully this offense can hit the ground running. The naysayers can't be proven wrong during the preseason but you have to like what we're seeing as all of the #'s favor us.

No pain, no gain.

This is telling to me, JT. For instance, Darrelle Revis, Jets, Bucs, Pats, Jets. A journeyman (generally a negative connotation) or everybody wants a piece? Does Olsen feel rehashed, or just a 'successful' offensive mind making money wherever he can?
Success is a journey, not a destination. Go all out Mighty Jaguars.

I’ve been fooled by Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles before, during the 2014 preseason, when his impressive performance led me to believe he was primed for a good rookie season. The he went out and ranked last in the NFL in our QB grades.

That’s why I’m trying not to get overly excited about Bortles again lighting it up this preseason – but it’s hard not to be impressed with what he’s done through three games, most notably his performance against the Lions last week. He found a rhythm, playing into the third quarter, and displayed the kind of accuracy that the Jags want to see out of their face of the franchise – earning a very impressive +5.7 grade in the process.

His stats are certainly gaudy enough, as he completed 20-of-29 passes including seven over 10 yards in the air. What’s more, outside of getting spooked a little early on one play, he showed good poise in a pocket that wasn’t always clean (guard Zane Beadles struggled with the power of DT Tyrunn Walker, and tackle Luke Joeckel struggled with everything thrown at him by Philip Hunt). He scrambled when necessary, and did an excellent job of leading his receivers into extra yards while fitting the ball into some rapidly closing windows.

No career is made on a preseason performance. But you’d be forgiven for allowing Jaguars fans reason to get excited about Bortles after last week.

With week 3 of preseason in the books, let’s look at the players who earned the highest marks at their respective positions (game grades are in parentheses).

Quarterback: Blake Bortles, Jaguars (+5.7)

Cam Newton had a fine outing, but Bortles was the standout as he showed the kind of touch, anticipation and accuracy to make Jaguars fans excited about the year ahead.

Tight end: Clay Harbor, Jaguars (+2.5)

Others had more yards, but it was a complete effort from Harbor to land him on this list. He showed that while Jacksonville is deep at tight end, there could be a role for him somewhere.

Yeah he played well last pre-season. The difference I would point out is that last season he was usually playing with our team's #1s against other teams #2s, this season he's playing against other team's #1s.

He's also less likely to regress after a year of playing and practicing. Also much more used to the speed of the game so he can slow things down a little. I'm pretty excited about our passing offense for the first time in I don't know how many years.

Are they talking about the play he spun out of the sack? What do they want him to do be a statue and eat the sack calmly?

No I think it is play where he threw out of end zone instead of trying to squeeze it in. Even Blake admitted he rushed that throw

Love your optimism; but we need to see it on the field in a real game. Remember, BB looked like the 'mac-daddy' of all last preseason too.

There is no reason why we should not expect him to continue his success into the regular season compared to last season.

He was a rookie who was not expected to start right away... Never mind the fact that he had to learn the nuances of a NEW playbook, gelling with the receivers, etc...

He had a full season to work out the kinks, understand the playbook better, better his mechanics, and more. He is progressing in the right direction and it is crystal CLEAR.

Yes, but he didn't look like he did this preseason. He looked like Gabbert last preseason. This year he is climbing the pocket, extending plays, saving Joke's but, making accurate throws at all levels. It's really exciting if you ask me. Haven't seen someone do this is Jacksonville in a LONG TIME. He will definitely surpass Brunnel

Bortles absolutely did not look like Gabbert last preseason. What is up with this revisionist history? I read BCC's BS article about how most of Bortles's plays came off broken plays and sandlot football last year's preseason and crap, which is a pack of bull. Shoot all you have to do is look at the highlights on youtube to know that isn't true let along watch the game. Or even go back and read this forum last year during that time, including YOUR posts. Were there some plays like that? Yes, but his most impressive plays were ALWAYS on called bootlegs or darts from the pocket. I can see people are giving into the narrative that Bortles was bad last regular season and therefore what we saw in the preseason was a fluke, therefore going by that logic the only way to justify that is by saying last preseason Bortles did a lot of his damage through sandlot football rather than conventional QB play. NO. The thing we were raving about last preseason is just how comfortable Bortles looked as a QB, this idea that he was playing sandlot football 75% of time or something is some made up crap by insecure fans.

The truth of the matter is Bortles was NOT as bad as people have been making out last season and there was a clear divide in his play from before the bye week to after the bye week. Fans should not feel the need to be insecure about the way Bortles played last season and come up with make believe ways to justify why this preseason is more real than last year's because he's not playing sandlot football or some crap.

Bortles was good last season. My take from Bortles looking like Goobert last preseason was Goobert looked good, then did not carry over the same play to the season. I've been supporting Blake, and saying he was good since the beginning. Go find those phantom posts, you won't find any on me.
