Marcedes showed him up on his lone catch yesterday. He needs to step up. It feels like high profile FAs come here and under perform.

Quote:Not necessarily true. The Jags hit on good handful of free agent targets in the early years. Not on too many of the big name guys though. Jimmy and Keenan were both brought in as under the radar FA's. So was Mike Peterson, and Leon Searcy (Searcy wasn't under the radar though, Coughlin paid an arm and a leg for him). We whiffed on the big name guys such as Bryce Paup, and guys like Hardy Nickerson, Kyle Brady, Jeff Lageman, and Carnell Lake never lived up to their expectations.

Don't forget Heyward from Denver. Paid so much for him, and had injuries and underperformed.

Quote:Ok, do this for the top 15 teams in the league, instead of the annoying pigeon pecking.

Btw, udfa isn't FA.

Undrafted FREE AGENCY. But I get what you are saying and that's why I noted it. I just picked two of the best teams and looked them up. I am not going to do half the NFL right now while I am at work. Suffice to say 8-12 free agent starters os probably about league average if I were to guess.

Go build a team with only draft picks and see how long it takes you. You need both no matter how much you close your eyes and wish our free agent busts had never happened.

I see your Green Bay Packers and I raise you a Denver Broncos.

Different strokes for different folks. You get good players where you get good players. The key is to actually be able to identify them.

To be fair, there were several plays where he was wide-open and didn't get the ball. One, in particular, would have resulted in a medium- to deep-gain for a touchdown. The OL, of course, wouldn't allow Bortles enough time to get it out there though.

He needs to step up big time.
The point is before he got hurt he was doing well and at least looked the part. Now he looks out of shape and slow which points to a conditioning issue

Below are the stats for Tight Ends for team coached by Greg Olson. I did include the ones where he was the QB coach for completeness.

As you can see he has never truly featured a TE in the red zone. Even Kellen Winslow did not get many TD's with Olson calling plays.

Yes, KW did get more targets/yards than Julius has, but they are very different players with different styles, and Julius will never be that style of player. Does not mean he cannot be a main focus of the offense.

I know what the acronym stands for, but when we refer to FA, it's the spring mad rush of signings, you know what i meant.  UDFA is more of a supplement to the draft, and i'm all for it.  You aren't throwing boatloads of money at guys, and lightning sometimes strikes.  I'm also not saying build the team only with draft picks.  I'm saying the draft should be the focal point of your build, and FA is used to fill gaps.  History shows this is the way to do it.

You will find way more examples of good teams built thru the draft than you will teams built thru FA.  The broncos have some great draft picks too, btw.  It's not different strokes, it's one way proves to work year in and year out, and the other, most often, does not.  The Redskins have decades of examples for you.

maybe we can get that guy from Chicago who made that one-handed catch last night. Zach Miller? He seems cool.

The Jaguars have provided a 15 year example for you.  Neither work unless you actually evaluate the player correctly.

Out of the current 12 projected playoff teams only 2 starting lineups are made up of less than a third of free agents (Packers and Bengals).  Every other team (Patriots, Panthers, Steelers, Broncos, Jets, Colts, Falcons, Cardinals, Vikings, and Giants) has 8 or more players signed from other teams in their starting lineup (not counting UDFA's).

You really do need both.  If the top teams could afford to sign top tier free agents at a position of weakness, they would.  Most top teams have their own free agents to worry about re-signing.  They didn't get to the top with veteran minimum players.

It doesn't change the fact that the Broncos have been primarily built through free agency.  They just traded for a high priced veteran player and almost traded a 1st and 2nd round pick for another.

Sadly, they are going all in for a Super Bowl this year, which they won't get.  They'll fall off a cliff soon enough, watch.

Pretty much agree, yet of all the teams you've mentioned, the core of thier strength is primarily their draft picks.

Ok... can we have a good couple seasons and then fall off a cliff? that would be nice rather than always falling off a cliff.

Maybe, but it won't be because of their defense. It will be because Peyton Manning retires. Their free agents are still playing well.

We did. See 2005-07. Hope you enjoyed it.
