USA Today's record projections

#1

This is a little dated, and apologies if this has been posted (I haven't seen it) but I found this article interesting.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nf...500328001/

This is one of the more favorable evaluations of the Jaguars.

We are picked tied for 2nd in the division with Houston at 8-8.

A couple of interesting blurbs:

Quote:Jacksonville Jaguars (8-8): Everything looks to be in place — a potentially dominant defense, upgraded O-line and (most exciting for Jags fans) rookie RB Leonard Fournette — to restore this franchise to relevance ... if Blake Bortles can get back on track. The team will make its annual pilgrimage for a London "home" date in Week 3, immediately followed by two more road trips. If the Jags weather that, maybe they can make a run in December, which begins with three straight at EverBank Field.

and here's more praise for the D...

Quote:Cincinnati Bengals (5-11): The offensive line's outlook is troubling, to say the least, especially with three consecutive road games against stout defensive teams (Jacksonville, Tennesee, Denver) in November. And will Marvin Lewis' lame duck status only ratchet up the pressure on a team that tends to underachieve when it counts most?

It's interesting. But when it comes to my expectations for the upcoming season, I am like a dog that has been beaten so many times he cowers in a corner. I am expecting pain.

I'd say that's probably a common malady among Jaguar fans.  I'm hearing chatter that training camp attendance is down and wondering what early game attendance will look like (at least until they start getting some wins).
I'm condescending. That means I talk down to you.

It's sad beyond measure it's gotten to this point. Most of the fan base's pessimism before this point surrounded the team staying in Jacksonville. Now it's a purely football based lack of hope.

What is the minimum record it would take to make the fan base believe again? To continue on Marty's analogy, what would it minimally take to coax the dog out of the corner?

For me, it would take at least a 2-2 start to the season.

Going into Houston and having their fans heading for the exit at halftime would do it quickly. Winning the first two games in any fashion too.

I was thinking season long record.

What kind of record would it minimally take to avoid this fan base malaise at this point next year?

I can only speak for myself, but if I was to guess at what it would take for the fan base to overcome their malaise, I would think 8-8 with the arrow pointing up, and some star players to emerge.

There have been so few wins in Everbank the last few seasons, that when I attend one, it's a really strange and wonderful feeling.   It's amazing that we still manage to sell tickets.   If the team gets a few more home-field wins, the euphoria addicts will return to the stadium.   And I mean "euphoria addicts" very literally.   People can get addicted to the euphoria that comes from watching a live win.   But there have been so few of those lately.   If you were a cocaine addict, and 9 out of 10 times you went to buy cocaine, you got fake cocaine instead, it seems like pretty soon, you'd give up cocaine.

Jeez.

Losing seasons...

relocation...

malaise...

smaller crowds...

abused dogs...

addiction/cocaine use...

possible allegiance switching...

masochism...

This is one of the saddest Jaguars related threads ever, especially as it pertains to the start of training camp.

For me, it's 8-8 as well. Kinda sad really. at 8-8 they win half the games miss playoffs. But yet I'd be ecstatic. I think a season like that would leave me watching each game with hope they will or at least can win. Makes those Sunday football food preparations that much more fun and meaningful. Tired of watching part of the game knowing the outcome by halftime. But I do (like every offseason) have higher hopes for the team this year. I think this year, we have more reason to with TC and DM running the show and with the talent that is on the roster. Plus, training camp seems to be ramped up as much as possible. So if they can't get 7-8 wins I'd be disappointed.

Sadly, no.  I don't think I can stop being a jags fan.  I'm a glutton for punishment I guess

This... It's just that simple. This team has let the fan base down so badly and for so long now that many of us just expect to lose.

Hey, if you want a positive thought, think of this: there's nowhere to go but up!

No, never.  That would be like leaving your family and moving in with the family next door.  Not gonna happen.

Simple... a winning season. I don't even care if with a winning record we don't make the playoffs, but for me to get excited about this team again, it will take a winning season... I'll even take an 8-8 record and be very happy about it! If we turn in less than a .500 record though, as far as I'm concerned, it just means it was another season of over-hyped Jaguars football.

The 'over-hyped' part is what has been the most damaging aspect of this teams miserable record over the past ten years or so. Promoters led the fans to have unrealistic expectations for this team so many times... only for the fans to end up getting burned really badly, to the point that now many in the fan base no longer have any expectation for the Jaguars except for them to come out and stink the place up!

Four, five, six... even seven wins won't do it to convince anyone that things are different now; we need a winning season, or at least a .500 season, to make many of us Jag fans start believing in this team again.

That what I think anyway.

For me, I think 7-9 is obvious, palpable improvement. The question marks at QB & OL are big enough that if one or the other improves to the point that we get to 7 wins or more, it's huge.

Anything 7-9 or better means we were at least competitive which is good enough for me. We haven't been competitive in any season for far too long.

A visited a sportsbook that has the Jags at 6.5.

I put $60 on the over. I'm predicting 8 wins.

I'm not looking for a record or a number of wins. I'm looking for something that really shows that this is a competitive team that breaks through the past. The organization really screwed up last year and I'm looking for something that restores the relationship with the fans.

I want to see a team that works together and pushes through together. I don't want to have other teams mistakes be the reason we win. I don't want to talk about how some crazy ref call was the difference in a game. I want this team to be good enough to make their own breaks. I don't want the illusion of 2015 and the hype of 2016.

Go Jags.

To better explain ...

I could stomach the losing the past few years, but nothing indicated the team was anything but a door mat going through the motions.
Birth of the Franchise - November 30, 1993
Death of the Franchise - November 29, 2011

Fans deserve better. Thanks for all the good times too many are in the past.

Well that's it then. 6-10 is the best we can do. Well done NYC4Jags, I hope you're happy.
