First week, they looked fine. Second week, awful.

Since when do position coaches make personnel acquisition decisions?  They coach the bodies they're given.  If the talent isn't there, it's difficult to magically transform guys into all pro linemen.

I was under the impression that Marrone was our Head Coach this year. After having two years of being the o line coach. He is as familiar with the skills (or lack thereof) of the Jag linemen as anyone else on the face of the planet coming into the 2017 offseason.

IF we should have made a serious overhaul of the line (and to most observers that looked necessary after last season and sure did last night), then Marrone deserves blame. Cause I guarantee that Caldwell and Coughlin asked Marrone what he thought of the existing talent at the o line. If he said, "it's awful and if we are going to be a run first team, it has to be a strength so we need improvements" you would have seen a single real addition at guard or center. Everyone and their momma was saying "Jags don't have a LG on the roster" at the end of last season.  And then we don't fix that. The Jag media then explained after zero moves to the interior that Jags were basically smugly sure the o line talent was much better than the stupid fans thought. I'm pretty sure our former o line HC was behind this talk.

IMO, our entire front office crapped the bed by not addressing the interior of our o line OR the QB spot in the offseason.

Little/no competition on the O-line.  No competition at Kicker.  No talent brought in at QB to provide competition.

We have a ton of cap space.  Lots of quality O-linemen available in free agency.  We had opportunities to pick up the talent and passed.

There is a reason we have the worst record in the NFL over the past 5 years; we lack talent in the front office and coaching staff.

Both Caldwell and Coughlin deserve some responsibility for the team's failure to address the interior of the offensive line during the off-season. Regardless of how much Marrone liked Shatley, Cann and Omameh, the final decision on whom to draft or pick up in free agency was in the hands of Caldwell and Coughlin. There were several good free agent guards available and they ended up with Watford, who has been below average in his career. They then passed on guys in rounds 3, 4 and 5 who could have all pushed for starting at guard. Smoot looks like a good player, but the need was not great for a run-stopping defensive end. Westbrook looks great, but how will he do when going up against shutdown corners instead of 3rd stringers, especially when the weak offensive line doesn't give our q.b. much time to throw before getting sacked.

Yes, Caldwell is lucky to still have his job due to keeping Bradley too long and his failure to hit on Bortles, Fowler and Joeckel. I expect him to be gone after this season, if not sooner.

I just hope he is gone before the draft. I don't want him making decisions or even trying to influence the team with his own opinions, on who we should select.

This from another forum and not my post.  Sobering though:

Quote:Dave Caldwell needs to be fired asap. They brought him in and he hired Gus Bradley, tore the team down and said they were going to rebuild it the right way through the draft.

2013
Luke Joekle - gone
Johnathan Cyprian - gone
Dwayne Gratz - gone
Ace Sanders - gone
Denard Robinson - gone
Josh Evans - gone
Jeremy Harris - gone
Demetrius McCray - one

2014
Blake Bortles - soon to be bust
Marquis Lee - injured more than he plays
Allen Robinson - good receiver (not great)
Brandon Lindor - injured more than he plays
Aaron Colvin - injured more than he plays
Telvin Smith - Good player
Chris Smith - gone
Luke Bawanko - just a guy
Storm Johnson - gone

2015
Dante Fowler - so far a bust
TJ Yeldon - 4th string back
AJ Cann - just a guy
James Sample - gone
Rashaad Green - soon to be cut
Michael Bennett - just a guy
Neal Sterling - never heard of him
Ben Koyack - never heard of him

2016
Jalen Ramsey - good player
Myles Jack - we'll see
Yannick Ngakoue - good player
Sheldon Day - just a guy
Tyrone Holmes - gone
Brandon Allen - 3rd string QB
Johnathan Woodard - never heard of him

2017
Leonard Fournette - should be good if healthy
Cam Robinson - starter by default. We'll see.
Dwayne Smoot - ?
Dede Westbrook - will take Rashad Greens 4th string WR spot
Blair Brown - ? Never heard of him
Jalen Myrick - ? Never heard of him
Marquez Williams - ? Never heard of him

So in 5 drafts he got about 5 good players that start. That's building through the draft.

We've had some good players selected in the draft, but that's to be expected when you pick in the top 5 of every round year after year after year.

But between Joeckel, Bortles, and all the FA busts - Caldwell is clearly not the answer. Demoting him by bringing in TC was a good idea, but he really just needs to be gone.

Fire Caldwell and replace him with Atlanta assistant GM Scott Pioli.

@rosstuckernfl The Jags still have no idea what they're doing. I have proof:... https://t.co/nlWQXSHnvR

Did you read the link? He thinks they should be sticking with Bortles and not giving away snaps with the ones to Henne.
 Is that your stance now?

Or could you just not keep yourself from posting anything negative you see on twitter?

That's not my stance, you should know it by now, which I've stated many times.

It's a Jaguars article, that's why I posted it. You act like they're so many positive ones to post.

I don't generally do this kind of thing, but I'm feeling a bit glum today. I thought we all might have a good laugh over the really on point Hot Takes in this thread.

You mean besides build a team that was 2:37 away from the Super Bowl last year?

No it's hard to tell how much of a difference is attributed to coughing coming in last year and how much is getting rid of Gus or how much is Caldwell's picks finnally getting it together. Probably a combination of all three but regardless it worked last year. No one should want to make changes after last year's successs. Let's see if we can build and sustain that success first or was it a fluke season? I honestly don't know but I'm willing to wait and find out.
