Hurrican Irma

Matthew

I can't get the NCH page/image from the 5pm update to reload to share here. The update looks similar to Matthew, only closer to the coast.

Also, I don't know if any of you read the "discussion" part of the page where they describe in as much detail as possible why they make the decisions they make for the tracking, but I find it fascinating how all the 'moving parts' have to move together in order for a storm to strengthen or weaken, the direction it heads, the speed at which it travels, etc. Quite interesting. In this case, in a terrifying way for anyone who is in the storm's path. This would be the 5pm update discussion.

NO kidding ... taking the Gulf Stream directly into GA, SC, and NC.

The worst part is the fact that after it passes through Florida, everyone thinks its over.  Meanwhile GA, SC, and NC were getting flooded and the national media was tuning out by that time.  Not that it makes a difference in the grand scheme of things but they should get more media exposure for what it's worth.

You have some nerve showing up around here.

I never imagined it is possible for whole countries to be wiped out by one storm. Apparently Antigua and Barbuda lack the infrastructure and construction codes necessary to avoid all the damage Irma is causing.

Mom told me someone she knows was in Key West and had to evacuate, adding there is only one road in and out.

The lastest update doesn't differ much from the previous one. Also, the spaghetti models have converged to very similar predictions. Still early, though. Like to see it move further to the east.

Damn it. I went to publix today to stock up, but I've already eaten half of my "hurricane snacks."

Here is an article about different hurricane tracking models around the world giving meteorologists a hard time predicting Irma.

I also read a report that there was one confirmed death on each of four Caribbean islands hit by the storm.

I think correcting someone's misinformation about the hurricanes projected path is very much on-topic, and could in fact be lifesaving if the person relying on wrong information isn't doing anything to prepare for the storm because they think there isn't a chance it will hit in this area.

Agreed. There could be someone on this board who actually trusts the weather prognostication skills of JDub to be gospel despite the fact she was completely wrong.

Of course, these are posters who might just be looking for an excuse to take a dip in the ocean on Monday and she's giving them the kitty cat go sign.

This. One of the worst hit areas was in Lumberton, NC. I mean some serious devastation. Also in Fayetteville, NC. It was crazy. But they're not media worthy areas so no one was paying attention while hundreds of people lost everything they owned.

So, I went to Hellmart tonight to pick up some Pepto for my husband. A guy in the parking says there's no water and no bread but there is plenty of beer. I laugh a little and go in and get the Pepto. Out of curiosity I check out the aisles and sure enough there is no water and no bread and no flashlights left.

In a small town in central NC. I guess Matthew taught people a hard lesson last year.

We have been buying water to drink due to our well testing positive and being treated for e coli. Now I'm like, dang I can't even get any water to drink right now much less next week. Went to Harris Teeter and they were stocking empty shelves of water. Thankfully they had the 2.5 gallon ones we've been buying, but only a few of those.

Just want to add, I don't understand the hype for water. Do yourselves a favor and buy an RO unit, 120 bucks at Costco. It's a little late now but if you consistently purchase bottled water a filter will pay for itself very quickly.

I make 20 gallons or so before a storm and I'm good to go.

Guys. I am defeated.

I live in South Florida, Palm Beach County. I spent all day putting up my own shutters and those of neighbors and friends. I have just under a full tank in my truck, which would get me to right around the Florida Georgia line, I also have an additional 6 gallons in a jug. I have family in Columbia, South Carolina, so that would be my natural destination.

After considering it all day I decide my son and I are going to evacuate, goal was to leave at 1 AM. I clean up the rest of the yard, get the truck packed, get ready. Get in the truck, drive down the street, flat tire...

There is a nail sticking in one of my rear tires. It's embarrassing to admit, but I have no jack and even still I would not feel comfortable making that drive on a spare. I have no choice but to get a new tire tomorrow and try again for leaving tomorrow night. I see no point in leaving in the day as the roads are packed. I just fear that by tomorrow night it will be too late, I called a few gas stations in Jacksonville all the way up to Savannah and they say that gas is there however it is very limited.

I hate to ask this, and obviously everyone has their priorities, but does any good Samaritan happen to have maybe ten or so gallons of gas to spare for a board brethren? Obviously I would pay for it. Not sure if I will even leave, just remembered I have friends in Fort Myers, so that could be an option as well, in which case I've got plenty of gas to get there and back.

I am hoping for the best and maybe it was just meant to be. You never know with the models however the most recent model has this thing basically hitting my area dead on. If this thing hits us with 185 mph sustained winds, we are done. I wouldn't feel comfortable in my own home.

Every gas station may not have gas, but some will. It's all timing and location. And fix-a-flat/green slime may be a short term solution for the tire issue...
