The dude's mechanics suck and he can't feel a rush. We can run the ball all we want but until that is addressed the run game will always be mediocre because there is no threat of throwing down the field. The telegraphed throws with that long windup is just a recipe for disaster.

Can't feel a rush?  I quit reading after that because that is one thing he does do well.

I do agree that most of Bortles problems are probably between his ears.  

We saw the same thing happen with David Garrard where he had all of the tools to be a successful QB in the league, but didn't trust himself when he was reading the defenses once he dropped back.  His hesitation was a direct result of being put under a mandate to avoid making any mistakes.  What was odd about him was that he was fine in 2007 in the playoff run, but once he got that contract, I think he got too much into his own head.

I think they've drilled it into Bortles head that he needs to avoid making mistakes, and it's actually causing more harm than good to have him focus on this.  When he entered the league, he was capable and cocky enough to not worry so much about mistakes, and to just throw the ball around.  He's never going to be pinpoint accurate, and he's not always going to make good decisions, but I do agree that they need to get him loosened up by opening up the offense a bit, and putting the focus on making plays rather than avoiding mistakes.

Bortles has the ability to be an effective starter in the league, and could even find some success here if he can just get out of his own way and make the plays.  Hopefully Hackett & Co start to recognize this and take the governor off the offense.  Teams are daring them to do so.  Take advantage of it.  If he makes mistakes, so be it.  Give him the chance to succeed and let's see what happens.

Agreed, however I wonder how much of the "drilling into his head" has come from the coaches and how much has come from media/social media?  I'm sure that he sees it one way or the other.  A young kid his age certainly sees what is posted on twitter and a host of other online sites.  Heck, look at the garbage posted here.

If you can let social media get to your head you don't need to be an NFL QB.  Thank God we have less than a year left of the Bortles era

I would much rather them just take the reigns off and allow him to play to win even though I still think he will still have plenty of fails. It's the constant playing not to lose and never throwing more than a 15 yard pass that is excruciating. It appears that no matter what, he is done here in Jacksonville so he might is well just try to make plays. Make attempts early to try to get some guys out of the box.

This is where I am.  If the defense is going to challenge you to throw on them then throw on them.  If it doesn't work out so be it, we were not going to win anyway.  At least then we will truly know what we got.  Right now Blake has one arm tied behind his back so to speak.

I like this idea and am willing to help Blake find his drunk sweet spot. It's like in beer pong. Too sober and you're terrible. Too drunk and your terrible. Gotta hit that sweet spot in the middle.

I think the writing has been on the wall for a long time for anyone open to seeing it. Consistently bad decision making and mechanics combined with rumors of partying too hard, bad body language in press conferences and throwing former coaches under the bus. Most of the off the field stuff individually isn't that bad, but when you start adding everything up what we see on the field makes sense to me. He either doesn't have the ability, isn't committed to football or both. 2015 was fool's gold. He still made a lot of bone headed decisions that directly led to losses even in the year he put up the stats and was part of some very exciting plays which allowed people to forgive and/or forget the very bad part of his game. I'm with the decision to play him this weekend but his time here as starter is probably running out faster than some of you think and it may come during the game this week or not long after.

If we dont draft a "high end qb" then surround him with high end linemen next year we might as well have stuck with Bortles. Looking at the titans, rams, Oakland and Dallas, they all tried to get high tier O lines, got them, and their QBs turned out good to above average. Otherwise we are essentially taking the Detroit/colts approach and hoping the qb will develop and cover the flaws of the online which is a huge gambit and for us, destroys every qb we get

Yes. So did Freeman. Then they went in the tank. Carr had his best year under Olson, Olson left and then he took off the next year.
