You can trash Bortles for a lot of stuff, but at the end of the day, he has contributed to getting the team where it is right now. If they somehow manage to get through this weekend with a game left to play, I think that probably seals the deal.

QBs don't grow on trees. He will be extended. There is not much history of QBs playing incredible when they are introduced to the league at age 22. Particularly with no running game and a poor defense. This season the running game and defense improved, the Jaguars weren't relying on Bortles throwing 50 times to try to come from behind, and as a result cut down on confidence draining mistakes (no pick 6s) and was able to manage games effectively. There is room for improvement, but he has definitely shown enough improvement for an extension. Some perspective

Unless you are getting an established top 10 quarterback in free agency you are always running a risk with a high draft pick or a one hit wonder like Flacco. There are only a handful of QBs that would guarantee the Jags immediate improvement at the position next year and the majority are not spring chickens.

Yes, he has improved from last season, but if Washington has been as patient as they have been by tagging Kirk Cousins multiple times, we can show the same patience by letting Bortles play next season under his current deal and taking more time to evaluate his progression. There is absolutely no need what so ever, to jump the gun here and give him a contract extension. I don't understand that kind of thinking at all.

He was also 12th for the regular season. The only QBs under 29 years old in the top 12 were Wentz (25), Prescott(24), and Bortles (25). The NFL is tough. Look at Brady's early seasons before the game slowed down for him. There are plenty of examples. Everyone said Blake was raw coming out of college, but the Jaguars still threw him into the fire on a horrible team in his rookie year. This is his first year with a competent coach and he led us to a win over Pittsburgh to make the AFCCG. Make no mistake there were plenty of chances to fold when Pittsburgh was scoring every possession, but the offense answered the call each time in the 4th quarter. The Jury is still out on if he is a long term quarterback, but the fact that he isn't a pro bowler by age 25 isn't automatic proof that he is the wrong guy long term either.

This is a factor too and something worth noting.  Throughout this season we have seen plenty of criticism of Blake Bortles and a number of players have stepped up and supported Blake.  They seem to have added Blake's criticism as another chip on their shoulder.  He's liked by the locker room and that is something that counts.

I am in support of bringing Blake back.  We shouldn't make a change for the sake of change and I don't anticipate any realistic options being available that are an upgrade. Drew Brees and Alex Smith aren't coming here.  The team isn't going to break the bank for a guy like Kirk Cousins in my opinion.

Blake is only 25 years old too.  He is showing improvement, he is a gamer and one thing that gets glossed over sometimes is he is durable.  Blake has taken an [BLEEP] kicking in his first few years in Jacksonville and how much time has he missed?  Maybe one game due to any type of injury? He's a tough son of a [BLEEP] and I'm guessing that plays into the teammate respect factor too.

I think that’s getting a good bit of play in local media, and it has come from both players and his head coach.  That will no doubt be a factor, and I think their support actually bolsters Bortles confidence.  We haven’t seen him regress after bad play in the manner we did last year.  He has rebounded nicely from bad situations. That’s a good thing. 

If the playoff run continues beyond this week, it’s going to be impossible to justify moving on, that’s for sure.
