Interesting take on Blake: Already earned an extension?

You don't get the hate?

Did you watch his rookie season or last year? He couldn't hit a single receiver in stride. He has certainly worked his butt off and become a much better passer this year. Give the man a healthy ARob and a new pass catching TE and he could take another step forward.

I understand the hate but it's not like I like it. I just understand it.

I for one support Bortles.  I was on him too and admit I was wrong.  The guy is still very young and already proven he can take the team far into the playoffs.

That being said, being a Bortles fan is like a roller coaster ride. When he is hot he is hot but when he is not oooh boy it's not.  Bortles career matches the stability of the team.  Offensive coordinators and QB coaches were changing hands like musical chairs.  I would love to see what Bortles could do with a real receiving threat and another year in the same system..

He did not get us to the AFC Championship. The entire team got us here. Largely, thanks to the defense. One QB, especially an erratic one should not take so much credit for where we are. Just look at the Buffalo game. Bortles was bailed out by our defense. This past week, Blake performed much better and although the defense gave up more points than usual. If you look at the long TD strikes by Pittsburgh though, the coverage was spot on. Roethlisberger just threw it to the perfect spot and his receivers made great catches. Football is a team game and the entire team should be congratulated for getting us here. QB's normally get the bulk of the credit, but in this case, the offense and defense are equally as important. So far, when one side has a bad week, the other side performs great and it saves us.

Coughlin/Caldwell isn't Washington. They're more intelligent.

It's worked out fine. They haven't locked themselves in, long term on a guy they don't believe can be a top tier QB. They'll probably try to take an upgrade in the draft.

You're out of your MIND if you think the Jags will try to upgrade the QB position early in the draft. 4th-7th round at BEST for Henne's spot.

The Jags don't win the Steelers game if Bortles isn't QB. I just love the "narrative" people have. If Bortles throws for 35 TDs and 4500 yards and goes (5-11), Bortles is a loser. If Bortles has a 2.5% INT rate, 21 TDs and leads to AFC Championship, Bortles was "carried there."

Dude, Bortles is the best QB in Jags history. 90 TDs and 64 INTs at age 25. Dude is on pace to throw for 350 TDs in his career.

Get a clue.

The only fools are those who never saw Bortles is a franchise QB. He's about to get an extension.

The Ravens let Dilfer walk after their Super Bowl win. Dilfer had at least as inoffensive a postseason as Bortles has. Food for thought. My hunch is that Coughlin is not the type to let a little thing like a deep playoff run result in keeping a guy who walked into a great situation but really isn't that great.

How many of those TDs came before the opposing team had a two-touchdown lead?

I'm starting to think Jags fans have the IQ of 40. If I hear Blake Bortles compared to Trent Dilfer one more time....LOL

CAREER

Trent Dilfer. 113 TDs- 129 INTs
Blake Bortles 90 TDs- 64 INTs

Bortles is ONLY 25. Dilfer isn't in the same STRATOSPHERE as Bortles. Dilfer is worse than Henne and his career 58 TDs and 63 INTs.

Jag fans wouldn't know talent if they saw it.

It's ok though....I love proving you guys wrong......plus Caldwell and Coughlin CAN analyze talent. Coughlin loves Bortles.

Book it.

Bortles basically started over this year with real coaching and.you can see the difference.
He was top 15 qb I belive and missing his #1 , #2 multiple games and #3 multiple games. And still balled.

Give him a decent TE who can catch and move and get Arob back. Then we can judge.

Id love to see this

Outside. Arob and Cole
Slott. Hurns and westbrook
Back ups. Don't matter

One reason I see him playing year 5 option and no QB drafted high. A vetern to work behind him.

A Dilfer comparison,  followed up by the garbage time argument. How original!!

Dilfer threw for 130 yards per game 12 tds and 11 interceptions the year he won a super bowl in 2000. QB rating in the mid 70s. This was one of his better years. He was also in his 7th year as a pro had 82 career tds and 91 ints and a career QB rating of 70 at the time. Don’t really see how a guy with a career QB rating of 73 and more picks than touchdowns is in any position to call Bortles the absolute worst quarterback.

What about Rex Grossman's super bowl or Mark Sanchez's back to back AFC title games? Average and even bad QBs get dragged deep into the playoffs from time to time.

As I've said before, there's going to be a lot of pissed off people when Jax doesn't take a QB until at least the 3rd round. Barring, of course, a crazy fall for someone.

I was hard on Blake last year, and he deserved a lot of criticism, but man, the guy was coached by Gus his first 3 years and was being openly criticized by players before this season started.

In one year, he's nearly doubled his winning %, was top 12 by QBR, and most importantly has won over and earned the respect from his team mates as a leader on the field.

I was very vocal about wanting Mayfield, and I'd still love to have him if he falls to us. But I'm not trading up for a QB at this point
IT WAS ALWAYS THE JAGS

Not pissed, just disappointed that we'd be settling for status quo when there will be at least a few different ways to upgrade. Especially since the status quo is going to be getting 3x more expensive.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, he's going to get a new contract.  Like it or not, he is this team's QB.  Is he perfect?  No.  Is he a Tom Brady or a Drew Brees?  No.  But he's a good QB and is getting better with experience.

Do you need an exceptional QB to go to the Super Bowl?  Not really.  Aside from Tom Brady we have Bortles, Case Keenum and Nick Foles on championship weekend.  One of these QB's is not like the others.

I predict that the team will probably draft a QB in the upcoming draft to develop under him.  I kind of think that Chad Henne is going to retire after the season since he's at the end of his contract and he is old (in football years).  Fans are going to scream for the rookie QB to be played the first time Blake throws an interception or has a bad game.  This isn't Madden or a video game, it's the NFL.  You stick with what is working.

There are 10 kinds of people in this world.  Those who understand binary and those who don't.

14 of the last 15 AFC champions had Brady, Big Ben, or Peyton Manning as the AFC representative, with Flacco's fluke run being the exception. You don't need an exceptional QB to make a playoff run...but if you want it to be sustainable year to year you do.

We did a great job catching lightning in a bottle with a terrible division, super easy schedule, and exceptional injury luck. If we keep the status quo everything is unlikely to break in our favor again, and it's likely we'll regret that we punched a long term ticket to ride the Bortles roller coaster.

We had a similar situation in Buffalo with a "game manager" as QB.  No offense, but if the Bills had a better QB performance vs. the Jaguars, we could be looking at a different outcome.  If I were a Jags fans I wouldn't want to settle for Bortles.  But as a fan of a team that needs a QB, I say go and re-sign him.  Less competition LOL

Yep, the rest of the league would be happy we chained a super bowl caliber team to the Bortles stake in the same way we were all thrilled that the Bengals chained their super bowl caliber team to the Dalton stake. There is zero reason to do that when we have him locked up with the 5th year options and then a franchise tag or two at our disposal.

Did you even watch the Buffalo game? We barely squeaked by them, because the offense could not score with Bortles under Center. That was the first playoff game. Without that performance by the defense, we don't even make it to the Pittsburgh game. The defense bailed him out of that one. He's so up and down it's ridiculous! As for him being the best QB in Jags history, that just shows how poorly we've had it at QB over the years. A lot of teams are constantly on the lookout for upgrades at the QB spot in order to draft a true franchise guy. The Jags on the other hand, find mediocre to decent QB's like Brunell, Leftwich, Garrard and Bortles and we settle in for several years. Imagine this team with a truly consistent QB under center. I guarantee we'd have more than one Superbowl coming in the next 5 years.
