If not Blake, who is your choice?
|
First and foremost, if you have a quarterback that is competent at the position, you are in the minority in terms of the rest of the league. There are less than 32 human beings on this planet that can play Quarterback at a high level in the NFL in my opinion. For this reason, you must resign Blake and roll with him.
However, if we were to replace him, or even cut Henne and draft a QB who would you feel good about? Do ya'll think Kurt Cousins is better than Blake? Which rookie would you feel confident in? I have heard Lamar Jackson a bunch but I just do not feel like his skill set translates very well as an NFL QB. If we hang on to Blake is it worth a top 3 round pick for a backup/challenger? I say sign Blake, see who's left in round 3 or 4 and if there isn't a quality QB left at that point, roll with what we got. I realize one or more of these points has likely been discussed in detail here and so if I have upset you with that, just find another thread to read! Curious to see who you guys feel confident in whether its a draft pick or a FA. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
FA: Drew Brees, Jimmy Garappolo (doubtful as he will definitely be signed by the 49ers)
DR: Josh Allen JMHO ![]()
In no particular order....... Josh Rosen, Baker Mayfield and Mason Rudolph. Guys that would offer legitimate competition for Bortles. Sam Darnold might be o.k. as well, but I'm more skeptical of him.

I'm not sure about Josh Allen based on the fact that he was incredibly inefficient against the few quality defenses that he faced in college. Round 3 I would feel better about any of the guys listed. Disclaimer: I was upset we didn't draft Manziel which means I don't know anything about anything
Best option, just pay Cousins. Expensive yes, but we don't have time to mess around with our championship window in it's prime.
2nd best option, trade for Foles. He'll be cheap for a year and then we can worry about an expensive extension or tagging. Good option but riskier than Cousins and an important pick is probably more valuable than one cheap contract year. 3rd best option, sign someone cheap like McCown who had a good season last year and who can do dump offs and drags for a cheap 5 million or so. 4th best option, keep Bortles. Hope he takes another step forward. If he does then he gets as expensive as Cousins so the reward for gambling he takes a step forward isn't there. Hence why this is the worst option. Options 2 through 4 I take a QB as early as possible too. Hopefully Lamar Jackson I think he's the best developmental QB, but if it's Rudolph/Lauletta/White that'll probably be ok too. I think trading for Foles is a good idea. I don't think signing Cousins is. He's good, but not worth the biggest contract in history.
Other than that, I like trading up for Mayfield/Rosen/Darnold, or standing pat and drafting Lauletta or White in the 3rd. Not a Rudolph believer.

I'm not surprised that Ryan Day from Big Cat Country is on his Crusade with the Blake hate this morning. Do us a favor and when Kirk Cousins go to the Denver Broncos you and Alfie become a big fan of that team and write for their site. ![]()
Honestly, the only two options are Cousins or Bortles. Brees and Jimmy G aren't going anywhere. All the other options aren't as good as Blake and Cousins.
Foles isn't going anywhere and I wouldn't give up a 2nd rounder for him. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today! You have yet to refute any of my points except with answers dripping in bias. I get it you bleed teal and it's hard to overcome that mentally. That's why fan is short for fanatic. It's simple though. Cousins and Foles are better than Bortles, and McCown is way cheaper than Bortles while being on the same tier. We should either be upgrading QB or staying cheap at QB. Paying a lot more for QB without upgrading QB is the worst of both worlds.
As of right now with who could be available and what I expect them to cost...
1. Cousins 2. Foles 3. Jimmy G. This team has a high chance of winning now and a rookie could delay that slightly, but the right rookie could still make it work.
Coughlin when asked if winning will be a focus: "What the hell else is there? This is nice and dandy, but winning is what all this is about."

In my opinion yes based on his floor Kirk Cousins is better than Blake but Blake Bortles has a higher ceiling than Kirk Cousins with proper development. For you and Cleatwood to say Kirk Cousins is better than Blake and is not even close it's not only fabrication but irresponsible to the other readers on this forum. Their statistics are very similar and please don't give me that Kirk Cousins had less to work with on the offensive side of the ball because Blake weapons was similar if not worse than him and he still was productive but none of you want to give him credit for it. If Kirk Cousins was this significant upgrade then why his own team don't want him and did not want him for the last 3 years. Please don't tell me about the Washington Redskins are dysfunctional and don't know how to run a stable franchise because although you are right about that team but remember they see Kirk Cousins in practice every day so they have the best evaluation on him overall. I just think Kirk Cousins is overrated and I would rather go into next season with Blake and put legitimate weapons around him and see if he can be successful.(02-08-2018, 10:47 AM)leopold332002 Wrote: Wow.... That's why Blake is third option at best. If we get Cousins we don't have to "and see if", we know we are getting better. If "and see if" turns out to not be true we just wasted a year of our prime window and we're back at square 1 of no franchise QB. It's crazy that so many people are willing to risk that when there are clear upgrade options out there. If you could tell me that if we take that risk then we could get a franchise QB for half the price for a long time then ok maybe that's a fair gamble to take. But the reward for taking that risk is literally only that we get Blake for ~10 million cheaper for one whopping season, and then he is just as expensive as Cousins is. That reward is simply not even close to worth the risk for anyone that can do a proper cost benefit analysis. Sorry. If you believe Cousins is better than Blake (which you said) then why not try to get him? The QB position is the most important position and if you can upgrade it, you do it. This team needs consistency. I mean if the Jags D doesn't hold the Bills to 3 points, you wouldn't be saying "Let's bring Blake back." You would be throwing him out the door and you wouldn't think twice. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!

True franchise quarterback can do that under the same circumstances but Kirk Cousins hasn't shown he can do those things especially in clutch moments. Cousins has 4 straight years of being across the board above average to well above average. This has been well chronicled also. He dragged a team just as bad as the Jags supporting cast the previous three years to a .500 record, while Blake led us to 3 straight top 5 picks. We've been overall all of this with detail. If you refuse to look at the evidence that has been shown many times there's no point in even bothering having a discussion. |
