Telvin Smith restructures deal with Jaguars

The Jaguars didn't decline any options. Hurns' contract did not even have an option and wasn't yet up, and they paid Marcedes' option. We could have maybe got a comp pick for Marcedes if they opted to not pay his option, but at the time we weren't sure of our TE situation and thought keeping him longer for $250,000 was worth it.

Could you imagine the outcry if we declined the $250,000 option and we were unable to land ASJ or Niles Paul? It was a good insurance policy to keep our options open.

If the team declining these "options" means releasing the player followed by no compensatory picks, the Jaguars should really refrain from writing contracts with the option year.

In the past I can see where compensatory picks were not such a big deal, but as I understand it, compensatory draft picks are trade-able.

I take a dimmer view of Caldwell for letting veterans walk away and NOT getting anything back for them. Struggling with cap space means mis-management.

With all the money we spent this year we weren’t getting a comp pick. The Norwell and Lee deal alone trumps losing ARob and Colvin.

Lee wouldn't count, since he was a re-signee.  Your point still stands that we likely wouldn't get a comp pick, as ARob, Colvin and Omameh were nixed by Norwell, Hayden and Moncrief.  Those were really the only 3 of value we lost.

Honestly I'm expecting a 5th to 6th round compensatory pick, though I wouldn't be shocked if we received nothing.

Doesn't comp picks only relate to the players lost. They don't look at what was brought in as replacements do they?

No. The calculate lost vs gain. If they figure you've gained more than you lost, you don't get picks.

You only look at true free agents which means their contract ran out. If a guy is waived early he's a street free agent and doesn't count. You look at the number of FAs lost to other teams and the number of FAs signed from other teams. The difference is typically the number of comp picks, so if you sign three guys and lose five guys, then you should get two comp picks. The draft position is based on their value as free agents so you'd get more for a guy signing a blockbuster contract somewhere else.

They actually do. Looks like we were all wrong.
