Marrone seems to be leaning toward playing Myles Jack full time in the middle (as most of us have speculated.)

With this in mind, who are some SAM LB prospects in this year's draft that might be considered to compete with Brown?

Quote: “I thought Myles took a really good step in the right direction and stepped up last year. I thought he played really well for us. If we left Myles at Sam [strong side] in regular personnel and moved him to Mike [middle] in nickel [as was the case last season], that’s fine. If we moved him in [middle] there for all three downs now, we have the ability to do that.” Marrone on Monday mentioned starting second-year veteran Blair Brown at strong-side backer in base with Jack in the middle. “I think we have some versatility in there, but if we were to start today? Yeah, we’d have Myles there,’’ Marrone said.

Curious to hear which prospects folks have their eyes on to play the strong side for the Jags in the future?

Vander Esch easily tops my list of potentially available players.

Is Rashaan Evans too much of a reach for #29?

Nah there's a solid chance they're both gone at 29. Regardless we should be looking at someone who will be playing more than ~30% of snaps with our first pick. Unless it's a QB ofc. Take a SAM day 3.

This was my thought as well.

I'm looking at guys like Tegray Scales and the like.

Josey Jewell is my guy. He’s a Poz clone. Probably will go in the middle 4th round but could slip to 5. Also as y’all know I like Shaquem Griffin as well as a versatile piece. He’s probably not going to make it to day 3 after destroying the combine but you never know.

I like him too. I just wonder if he's there at our 4th round pick and doubt the Jags go LB before that.

I think he'd be a good pick at the end of the third round although I sort-of selfishly want the Jags to focus elsewhere in their first three picks.

I think he'd be a good pick at the end of the third round although I sort-of selfishly want the Jags to focus elsewhere in their first three picks.

Jewell would be a nice scheme fit if we can get him there in round four.

If we go linebacker on day 2, I want Darius Leonard. If we go linebacker later in the draft, I want either Dorian O'Daniel or Oren Burks. I want another athletic, fast player.

Darius Leonard is 213 lbs and he is no Telvin Smith. No thank you, we need a SAM LB.

Darius Leonard was 6'2" 234 LBS. at the Combine. You must be thinking of someone else. He was all over the field at the Senior Bowl and led the game in tackles. The guy is a sideline to sideline tackling machine.

I know SAMs aren't usually quality coverage linebackers but I think that's what you have to try get now. Putting out a Poz clone on the field is just asking for OCs to toy with you and exploit that matchup.

My favourite candidate for the role is Fred Warner from BYU.

-6'3 235 so size isn't an issue.
-Extremely athletic , ran a 4.64 , 38" vert and 6.9 3 cone.
- Great in coverage and played as the nickel backer a lot.
- Team captain
- Very productive (32 TFLs, 6 sacks, 7 INTs, 2 TDs, 13PDs, 3 FF, 5 FR.
- Diagnoses plays very fast.

Only problem is I think he's gonna go in the 2nd and maybe 3rd and like NYC said I'd probably try avoid picking our SAM in the first 3 rounds. As far as I know we have met with Warner already.

I think Genard Avery from Memphis is an interesting day 3 prospect. He's got very explosive hands but he seems to get gassed fairly quickly.

Yup, 2nd or 3rd round, Jags would have the fastest LB corp.

Consider? Sure, but consider for what? For strictly playing SAM backer? (which is the thread topic)

The Sam is only on the field for 30% of defensive snaps. Not sure that warrants a first round pick unless you are wanting competition at MLB.

You think so? Do you think he creeps up to the 2nd? I could definitely see him in round 3 or 4. Maybe day 3 is wishful thinking.
