The physical tools are there, but right now he lacks the instincts and proper skills and techniques to be a starter. I think if he sees the field this year it will be on special teams or as a DPR in some defensive packages. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
He's definitely at SAM. Marrone explained that right now Blaire is our starting SAM, but later said that Leon will get a look at SAM.
That said, it was even more clear on the draft selection call when Caldwell told him directly, "You're going to bust your BLEEP on special teams, and play some SAM backer for us."

He's actually pretty talented at shedding blocks and keying in on his run fits. For a Sam LB in our schemes that's the meat and bones of the job. He's also a very good blitzer so we can work different packages off that. Won't be surprised at all if he starts week 1. Might as well ask again, just in general, anyone know why he stuck around that late? Based on his physical attributes and the way people talk about this guy it sounds like he should have gone higher.
Coughlin when asked if winning will be a focus: "What the hell else is there? This is nice and dandy, but winning is what all this is about."
He certainly has the weight/size you're looking for in SAM.

He's a developmental guy. His lack of instincts and ability to read and react is his biggest knock and makes him a liability in the run game. The ability to do these things isn't something that develops overnight if they even develop at all. (04-28-2018, 08:14 PM)Achilles Wrote:(04-28-2018, 07:54 PM)JackCity Wrote: I'd say he will be. One of the networks had him listed as the mythical "edge" position, meaning they saw him as a tweener pass rusher rather than pure LB.

At some point you just have to let go of what you thought should happen and live in what is happening. Every player has flaws. The reason Jacobs is in the 7th round is becuade he isn't very good in coverage, gets caught out by PA, and can be overly aggressive. His blocking shedding , run fits and blitzing are all starter level traits he has. Which is why he will be in competition with Brown for the Sam spot. We show less advertisements to registered users. He doesnt't have good instincts and is slow to diagnose and react to plays. Traits that are often "either you have it or you don't" type. The physical tools are elite if he can ever mentally catch up to the speed of the game. He will require a lot of work at the mental aspects of the game to become a starter, but even if he just makes it as a special teams player, it would represent good value with the pick.

He will have to show much more on defense than he did in college or excel at special teams to make the roster. He wouldn't drop to the 7th if coverage was his only issue considering Sam LBs often come off the field or are used to rush the passer in pass situations. He struggles with things you may not be able to teach. That is why he was still there in the 7th. (04-28-2018, 08:42 PM)Predator Wrote:(04-28-2018, 08:28 PM)JackCity Wrote: Every player has flaws. You said coverage was his main liability. So why would 32 teams pass on a "day one starter" for 6-7 rounds if his biggest liability is something he would rarely be asked to do in the first place? I know coverage isn't his only issue. He has poor instincts against the run also which is why he went in the 7th rd. I hope one day he becomes a perennial pro bowler, but with his current level of development, the odds of him being a starter this year are astronomically small. Also, I said him and Blair brown will be in competition for the starting SAM job. Which they are. Which games do you think were his worst games with his run fits and reads? Based on our personnel the odds of becoming a starter are not astronomically small.
This dude looks like he curls school busses.
No pain, no gain.
