It's probably the best battle of camp, not just for the 6th... but pecking order in general. Can Moncrief's contract be enough to hold Cole out of getting more snaps? Who's gonna take the place of Agent 88 in the slot? When healthy Hurns was real reliable for us there making some clutch catches....

I have not heard about Chark with dropsies, but it wouldn't be a total shock.  He's a rookie trying to learn the offense, how Keenan wants him to run the routes, coverages, etc. and he hasn't even gone up against Ramsey until maybe yesterday.

Green had a stretch during his rookie year where he looked like he was on a huge trajectory.  He had numerous long punt returns.  Then he had the bad year, then tore his achilles (2016, IIRC).  He missed last year.  I want to know how he is in the aftermath of that achilles tear.  Does he have his speed and burst back?  Has he gotten back in the coaches good graces?  As for that last question, that seems to apply to Mickens too, because the coaches seemed upset with him late last year.

At this point my choice would be Mickens.  Though Greene has caught a lot of passes so far in camp, I know Mickens still has the burst, and I know he can return punts very well, since he had two long punt returns last year-one for a TD.

IIRC doesn't Moncrief have a one year deal-two at the max?  I don't think his contract would be lucrative enough to hold Cole out of anything.

Despite him being a rookie last year and getting off to a slow start, Cole had almost 800 yards receiving.  If the local hacks are right, Cole's spot on the press conference rotation might be reflective of his favor with the organization.  I would also say that Marrone's presss conference from the other day indicated he placed a big priority on availability.  Moncrief has not been available for much of training camp so far.

The play on the field in preseason will make the decision clearer, but I don't think they'll hesitate to cut Mickens when the time comes. 
I think Westbrook is probably an even better punt returner than Mickens given the chance, and the team has three other receivers with experience as returners.  (Chark, Lee, Greene) 
Mickens will have to outplay Greene at WR and PR to stick. As of now, that's an uphill battle. If Lazard gets in the mix then Mickens' chances get even slimmer.

I think Moncrief is a one year fully guaranteed deal.
That's why I was wondering if they would force him on the field... but then again, this staff doesn't seem the type to play the money...
I thought I heard he was doing really well in OTAs but if he's hurt already that doesn't bode well with his history lol Perhaps he's an injury settlement cut waiting to happen. (you don't IR guys on one year deal I dont think)

That shouldn't have ever been a "thing," IMO.  If Lazard earns a spot (it's still a long shot, but if he does) they'll probably carry an additional WR at expense of TE slot.  Most teams use another position for TE3 anyway (OL, FB, LB, etc.) on gameday.

These are almost exactly my thoughts on the matter. Chark develops a hangnail and is put on IR for a year while he spends time with a Jugs machine. That seems to be the easiest solution. He can then replace Moncrief in 2019.

I was just about to bring that up. Lazard signed with the Jags with the promise that he wouldn't be moved to TE. So instead he's a big WR who can block and takes up a TE slot. He's functionally a TE while being called a WR.

That's quite the statement considering Mickens had a PR for a TD and another where he was tackled at the 1 last year.

Do you think his success was more a function of the blocking?

Is the perception of Mickens' status as "expendable" shaped by the fact he was a mid season acquisition last year?

That said, if Westbrook ends up as the 3rd or more likely the 4th WR, yes, I could see him handling PR duty. 

In fact, considering Lee, Westbrook, Greene and Chark could theoretically handle punt return duties at some point, Mickens has his work cut out for him.

Sad because he became a favorite of mine last year.

If he does end up getting cut, the good news for him is that those punt returns and his TD catches are on tape.
