At some point you just have to let go of what you thought should happen and live in what is happening.
Didn't really realize we play that many good tight ends, this makes perfect sense.
As the article alluded, Gronkowski has begun a trend of big TEs becoming a more constant threat factor throughout the league. Because of his size, we may have no choice but to play Harrison in certain situations.

I attended a few football clinics over the summer and one of, if not the, biggest concepts out there for the Offense was "find the Nickel SAM". Now, that player can be called whatever the hell the Defense wants, but to me the title is very telling as to how the Offense thinks.
When the Offense refers to a Nickel SAM, what they are looking for is the guy that is Coverage first but is looking to support the Run defense -or- is Run support first and is going to have to cover. In other words, who is the guy that is out of place? Find him and give him hell. If he's light, run at him. If he's big, make him run. The emergence of Harrison as a player that can fit either role and not require substitution due to personnel changes is a huge boon for this Defense.
I'm trying to make myself more informed and less opinionated.

If Harrison is up to the challenge and, more importantly, if the coaches are willing to create another nickel package to utilize him as a TE cover specialist, then sure, why not?
Both of those "ifs" are just big speculation right now, but it makes sense. Especially if they aren't liking what they are seeing from Hayden covering ASJ and others in camp. Practicing against Kyle Rudolph in Minnesota in two weeks will give the Jags a good opportunity to evaluate different guys covering another good tight end. If Harrison gets looks there, then this thing has a chance. I think it's probably more likely that Harrison sees the field in preseason at SS as the staff simply tries to determine when the right time to supplant Church might be.
I said it in the comment section of the article praising Harrison.
A day or two later they have an article about it... coincidence?? I think not..... lol Not only would he possibly be able to cover TEs in the slot but a bigger body than a NB in case they run (which is what I brought it up for.... the amount of times we got ran on in nickel) (08-02-2018, 08:25 AM)Deacon Wrote: I attended a few football clinics over the summer and one of, if not the, biggest concepts out there for the Offense was "find the Nickel SAM". Makes too much sense. Virginia Tech has been doing something similar with their whip. Having a guy who can play an lb or ss role against the run, then switch to more of a coverage role against the pass without having to substitute is a plus against quick offenses and no huddle situations. It can turn the tables by taking something offenses exploit and using it against the offense by eliminating their mismatch.

It's possible. The Panthers did something similar to this off and on with Thomas Davis for a few years. He would move up and down when and where needed between LB/S. And before that I think the Patriots/Ravens were doing it with Adalius Thomas between LB/DE/Nickel. Pretty cool concept. Everyone freaked out that we got him as late as we did in the draft. Looking forward to seeing him out there now.

He wasn't the best at coverage in college so while I think it's a good idea/experiment, I think you'd have to use it very judiciously. Against some of the bigger TE like an aforementioned Gronk or Rudolph it would probably be a good test. But against an Edelman, Cobb, Landry, Tate type of dynamic slot WR I can see it going very wrong very quickly.

The offense will think they have a matchup with their slot/TE. That defensive player will either be able to cover the receiver, or be a blitzer while the real cover man is nearby. Also versatile enough to hold up against run out of a pass formation. I love the way each side of the ball evolves and adapts to one another.

However, consider: 1. We may well have seen it and not known what we were looking at. The angles at the training camp, even standing atop the highest bleacher, do not really lend themselves to readily identifying formations and personnel groupings. The angles released in the twitter clips don't help much from that perspective, either. 2. There are a bunch of training camp practices that won't be open to the public where they could install that personnel grouping. In fact, we may not see that until the regular season. Of course, all of this presumes the coaches feel like Harrison is big enough, physical enough, and sufficiently adept in coverage to single him on a TE. They may not feel comfortable enough to do that. Worst to 1st. Curse Reversed!
Does this mean we'll see more Leon Jacobs in coverage?
We have all 11 starters back from an exceptional (pass) defensive unit and we are willing to not only one, but expose two rookies in coverage. By choice. Unrelated to injury. Either that's a REALLY good sign or something that won't last.
