Marqise Lee on the crossing routes
|
Most of us know where Lee is best at but I didnt know he was the best in the league at it. PFF has the top 5 WR in the league on crossing routes and Lee is ranked number 1. Im not the biggest Lee fan but he is deadly on them crossing routes. Hopefully he can have a big year.

This is a good stat but could be debatable. He's has almost twice the attempts. And Hackett needs to be careful calling so many crossing routes. A zone corner or LB can sit on that route with some good film study.

Lee’s crossers vary in depth and fall into Bortles progression in a way that there’s another option if Lee isn’t open. Lee’s catch percentage on these would be insane if Blake didn’t throw 4or5 of them three steps behind him. The fact to takeaway here is that Lee is really adept at getting open on these routes.

A zone corner or LB can sit on that route with some good film study. You can dislike Lee. He's given reasons over his career to justify that dislike, but this stat isn't one of them. More attempts (i.e. larger sample size) isn't a bad thing in statistical analysis, it's a good thing. There's nothing to read into here except that Lee is really good at crossing routes. His YPC isn't the highest on the list but he's still over 10 YPC so who cares? He's averaging a first down on these specific receptions. We show less advertisements to registered users. He's a team player and a good guy. And there are some things, like this, which he does extremely well. As I've said before, I refuse to judge any player who was coached by Bradley for the first few years of his career until he gets time with a real staff. Bortles is showing proof of that.

I'm not so sure Lee is really THAT good at crossers, but it's obviously a strength. I think it's moreso the fact that we zigged offensively and our opponents weren't ready for it, and we racked up a crapton of yards on crossers for that stretch in December where Blake was the top rated QB.
Unfortunately, as quickly as those crossers came they went away. The playoffs featured them very little. Dunno if that's because teams realized it and adjusted to take them away, or maybe because Fournette came back full strength and we were back in our 2 TE/FB sets that clogged the middle of the field and took away the third receiver that we used to cross Blake's face so well.
A few comments....
Have ALWAYS liked Marqise Lee (even if I can't spell his first name without adding a U after the letter Q). Not to detract from Marqise in ANY way, this is meaningless without knowledge of what type of coverage is being employed. It's unfortunate that the knuckleheads collected this stat, but did NOT indicate M2M or zone coverage. To lead the NFL in this category is a indicator Lee is possession wide receiver. Jimmy Smith was OUR deep threat receiver and Keenan McCardell was OUR possession receiver. Usually, the number one WR gets the checked flag while the number two carries a lunch pail. In the last meaningful thread concerning Marqise Lee, I commented that he can be a number one WR as he does have the ability to create enough separation to haul in the deep throws. I still feel this way. Most deep throws are only as good as the quarterback throwing them. WRs who jump up and catch and then fall down on the spot are really irrelevant to a successful deep passing game. This type of completion should NEVER be the goal of the offense. A solid WR talent has the ability to run under the deep ball, catch it in stride and run away from the defender - which is always the goal of the deep pass. Hope Marqise Lee's injury is not serious. |
