Ouch. Based on the camp reports, I'm getting the impression that the signings of Hayden and Moncrief were mistakes that wasted a lot of cap space. That was the consensus of the board at the time, which makes me wonder how Caldwell failed to see what most people here thought was obvious.

Actually when listening to the actual press conference Wash seemed quite pleased with Hayden and more than a knock on him he was complimenting the other 2 guys as well.
While I wouldn't have signed Hayden (at least not to those figures) I think he will be the starter and if the other 2 guys keep playing well it'll be great, especially in the long-term and for our depth/competition. The more guy step up, the better,we'll need everyone's help. A bit of the same with Moncrief who is purely on a 1 year contract, I would have probably spent those money differently but when he signed we also had no DJ Chark, Greene was coming off a terrible season and one season spent on IR so we had more questino marks back then.
Feels good to have multiple reliable (apparently of course) options.

I think Wash mentioning Herndon like that could probably also mean he's taking advantage of the plays he has made throughout training camp and starting to separate himself from the Myrick /Meeks/Delaney/Seamster group for a roster spot.

Moncreif is no big deal... he is a one and done and the way injuries have treated us at WR, I am sure we will use him this year anyway. If Cole, Westbrook and Chark overtaking him is the best case scenario for the long term health of the team.

Hayden is on the books through 2020 and we need to keep him at least through 2019 to avoid a large amount of dead money. I don't think Hayden will be useless for us though, I think he will contribute.

How much guaranteed money did Moncrief get? Is he a given to make the team? If everyone else is looking great and better than expected, would Moncrief be needed? Cole, Lee, Westbrook, and Chark are locks. Greene has supposedly looked good and Mickens has the return ability.

Let's not jump the gun. Hayden hasn't lost the nickel job yet, and Moncrief just returned from being injured since the start of camp so it only makes sense that he's behind the others right now. There's no need to write off either just yet.

I agree with those statements.
Also i actually think both players can be solid contributors this year.

About the unofficial depth chart out today I wouldn't put too much thought into that, we''ll see after the 3rd preseason game.

I think people are drawing way too many conclusions from a week of practice.

The perception of some of these players will change drastically over the next month.

There's a reason they play four pre-season games before they decide the final roster.

Herndon most definitely deserves the consideration. He’s been a constant force out there since camp started.

I like the competition we have at the nickel spot. Contracts mean nothing on this team. May the best man win.

I was just listening to Marrone's press conference and found this interesting: he was asked about AJ Cann who looks improved out there, what he thought was the biggest improvement he made and so on.
And he said that with the new helmet rule he put together a tape for the offensive line to show them exemples of their stance, who has a tendency to lower their helmet and put themselves at risk and the first player he noticed was AJ Cann.
Marrone said he noticed Cann had a tendency of lowering his head too often, putting himself in danger and with the new rule they are emphasizing to him to keep his head up,showing him tape on how he's supposed to play with the new rule and sutuff like that and as a result in addition to a better posture he said he noticed he's playing with better technique and better overall than he did in the past, at least so far.
Will be interesting to see if that translates to the actual games as well.
