JAGS Waive LB Brooks Ellis
|
John Reid of the TU is reporting LB Brooks Ellis has been waived via "left squad" designation.
The roster stands at 89. Why not give Mike Basile a call? He was just released by the Giants. He may contribute to special teams in a big way. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
"left squad" seems to mean Ellis screwed up pretty bad :
Quote:RESERVE/LEFT SQUAD. If a player leaves his club without permission after reporting to training camp, the club may place the player on its Reserve List as Left Squad, pursuant to the restrictions and procedures that appear in this section.

Coach him up on special teams a little. Mike is a very hard worker. He is eager to fit in. He happens to have a VERY instinctive knack for anticipating the run from the safety spot. He is a very sure tackler. He is fairly strong for his size. I've seen video of him bust up a lead-blocker and still manage to finish off the ball carrier with authority. Brooks' "leaving" clears a path for Motuapuaka to possibly make the roster. He's at least making the PS.
Hungalu and Payne are smiling as well. Keep an eye on both.

Matuapuaka may be battling Brown for the back-up WLB spot. Brown is the one guy I really feel is safe having locked up the backup WLB spot. If anything, the battle is between Matuapuaka and Payne for the backup MLB spot. BTW, when I talked of him going on IR freeing up a roster spot, I may have spoken too soon as I was confusing him with Cody Davis who should lock down a backup S spot.

Then why did the staff play Matuapuaka at WLB for the entire third quarter and half of the fourth quarter last week at WLB -- and then they brought in Brown to play there with only 4 minutes left in the game? If anything, the battle is between Matuapuaka and Payne for the backup MLB spot. I went back to the tape to check this. When the 3rd quarter began the LBs were Donald Payne at WLB, Matuapuaka at MLB and Leon Jacobs at SLB. This was how they usually lined up, although on a few sporadic downs Payne and Matuapuaka appeared to swap positions. You might have just caught them on one of those sporadic downs. You can tell for sure when the Vikings had a first and goal and Matuapuaka was in there at MLB for the short-yardage situation. This line-up remained the same in the fourth quarter except that Hungalu replaced Jacobs at SLB. I'm thinking Blair wasn't in there early in the third because they already know what they have in him as a player, and he played late just to make sure he got some reps in. I'll be shocked if they end up waiving Blair Brown. I'm just guessing though, but indeed for the final four minutes of the game, Blair Brown replaced Donald Payne as the WLB while Deon King replaced Matuapuaka at MLB. Hungalu remained the SLB.

Yeah. Looking at it again I guess Payne lined up at WLB more often than Motuapuaka. Hard to tell on some plays as they are both so near the center at times. Regardless - they both struggled. Payne seems to over-pursue too often. I am pressing somewhat for Mike Basile because I feel he can be one of the pieces of the puzzle. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
