I think 2014 will be Cecil Shorts MAJOR breakout year.
|
With the right quarterback, I think Cecil Shorts can become a very good #2 wider receiver and perennial thousand plus yard receiver. To date he has gone for 979 and 777 yards with Gabbert and Henne. So with a better quarterback he should be able to get above the thousand yard mark and be a productive player for this team even in his current situation of being the main target. However, with Blackmon or a true #1 receiver to pair with him, then Shorts could potentially be even more productive.

I don't expect Shorts to experience a big jump in production. I just hope they find someone really good to play opposite him. If Blackmon or someone of a similar talent level is on the other side of the field - Cecil could easily put up 1100 yards. Even with Henne behind center.
If he has a better WR on the field with him and a better QB behind center, then maybe we see "major breakout" numbers. I'm just not terribly optimistic of that all coming together just yet.
Quote:Yes, I guess Blackmon wasn't clutch in the Broncos game this year when he was the best player on the field. He's been more productive at #1 than Blackmon has.. he was averaging right around 100 yards a game last year after being named a starter. Once again, until Blackmon becomes consistent he's not on par with Cecil yet.

Hes good enough to break 1k in an ideal environment, but not good enough to do it on his own in a bad one. Yeah I think he could hit 1200 if he was with Brady, but that doesn't mean he is a true dominant wideout, he is a second fiddle level guy, and a good one at that, but he isn't the goto. Yes, it's improvement, but it's Blaine Gabbert 2012 level improvement. - Pirkster The Home Hypnotist! Media on the Brain Link! Quote:Peyton must store oxygen in that forehead of his. The only thing he has on Blackmon is not being suspended. Worst to 1st. Curse Reversed!

That's not true for 2012. 2013 he still played very well, he just had issues holding onto the ball. He gets open. And no, he has Blackmon beat in every category. Try again. He was a starter for only 8 games in 2012 and had 960 yards. He missed 4-5 games this year and still had 760+ His career high of 141 yards came against Richard Sherman before Blackmon came back. While about 50 of those yards were in "garbage time" that's still impressive against the best CB in the league. With a real QB, Shorts breaks 1k without trying.
Wrs usually break out in their 3rd year os starting. I wouldnt bet against it.
Shorts is a very solid number 2 caliber WR, thanks to Sullivan. If the Jags can draft a stud WR that can stretch the field, put a sober Blackmon in the slot, and protect the QB, this team could put up serious passing numbers. In this scenario, I could see both Shorts and Blackmon putting up a 1000+ yards a year.

I think Cecils most impressive attribute is his ability to get open, He's made so many top tier CBs look silly.. the problem he's had thus far has been either making the tough catch, or the QB placing it on the money.
Quote:Is Blackmon playing all 16? I think Shorts III is a glorified slot receiver and a locker room cancer. We're much better off without him.

Quote:While I agree Blackmon has more talent, Shorts has something about him that allows him to make a big play in the clutch and that's something we've never seen from Blackmon. From the Indy game winner, the Minnesota should be game winner and the Browns game winner where he made a top 3 CB in Joe Haden look silly. Blackmon has had 2 big games so far for us, but for the most part of his rookie season and even this year he had been average at best.. averaging around 40-50 yards per game and does not find the endzone very often. Blackmon is better than Shorts. He just needs to drop the booze.
Quote:I think Shorts III is a glorified slot receiver and a locker room cancer. We're much better off without him. So... your plan is basically: 1. Cut Shorts. Leaving our receivers as... Ace Sanders (who you say we shouldn't have picked), Mike Brown, and Kerry Taylor. 2. Draft a Tackle in the first round 3. Start Gabbert once we've developed the O-line (never mind that he'll be throwing it to nobody, and that he can't throw well in the first place)
I was wrong about Trent Baalke.
You guys have to stop feeding the troll. When someone calls a guy that his coaches praise for work ethic and competitive spirit a "locker room cancer" - you really have to stop regarding his posts as anything but delusion or trolling.
