Tashaun Gipson on loss to 'Boys: 'You can't do it, man'

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000...-do-it-man

In the past two weeks, the Jags have given up 70 total points. Seventy. Coach Doug Marrone said he's concerned and questioned whether the defensive scheme is too complicated.

Too complicated?

These guys have all been in this scheme long enough to know it intimately. I'm not buying that it's too complicated.

Don't we run one of the most basic defensive schemes in the league?

Losing faith in Marrone more and more every day. How can it be too complicated when I can tell what you're running from my couch with nothing but Madden training.

Last year we played a lot of Man and it worked, we went to Zone example 2nd half of ACFCG and we looked clueless. This year we are playing more Zone and when we do we still look clueless. That is not on the players but the Coaches not teaching. You can see the lb pass off a crosser to the other zone and the cb in thatzone eithere is watching the QB and not paying attn to players crossing in thier zone.

I mean, we have two of the best CBs in the league. Why would you not just let them man up the top 2 wrs?

THIS

It is all I've heard from armchair DCs, bloggers, sports reporters, and general fans and players and former players...
It's a vanilla scheme based around getting pressure from front 4.
Cover 3
Cover 2 man

What is all of a sudden complicated?

Bryan legitimately looked clueless out there. Deer in the headlights. He's Bambi for now on until he mans up and plays like J.J Watt. Since that was ALL the hype about him. "Oh he's awesome!" "He had the same results and measurements as J.J Watt at the combine!". So far. Looks like Tarzan. Plays like Jane. Doesn't have the instincts to be out there consistently.

If this is the guy they pegged to replace Campbell down the road? We're [BLEEP].

The scheme is simple
But what each individual has to do and expect can get very complicated. Then you add a mobile QB and the staff was probably throwing a lot at the players.

I think we see the coaching staff get back to basics and try to stress less thinking, more doing.

I will have to disagree with you on that one. The one play where he got turned aorund made him look like a bafoon i agree. but that was just one play. Why not look at some of the other plays he made. I saw him come frm the opposite end down the line and stick zek in the backfield for a loss similar to what CC does. Then he stayed his ground on the outside and was able to chase down and actually tackle the qb. and he did a bull rush that went straight to the qb just dak ran away. He is a rookiee getting limited time i think he has done well. The more he gets out there the more he will improve.

Yep that is the main problem.

I think they are trying to not get beat deep and give up big plays. Giving up yardage doesn't matter if you only give up 3 or stop the one ti e on the drive.

Bend but don't break.

Last year they allowed some big plays, so trying to get the offense less pressure to score. It is backfiring now though. Putting more pressure on the offense.

Although I was banging the table for Goedert on draft night, I think Bryan is going to be a really good pro. He's learning from the best in Campbell, seems to have a work ethic and has all the physical tools to be good.

I’m stunned we’re even having this conversation after last season. How did the entire team go completely stupid? This is a breakdown of the coaching staff, pure and simple.

What's missing from last year?

They're saying it was a communication breakdown.

So, who is responsible for communication between the sideline and the field on defense?

The missing link is that you had Poz making those calls last year.  I think his retirement is really hurting this defense right now.

playing man is easy you got a man you cover him.
playing zone is a bit more comunication between players if he goes here i drop off you cover him and i think that is what was missing

The emotional send off we witnessed at his retirement ceremony speaks volumes to how much they regarded his leadership. Perhaps it was a hasty move to retire him without a chosen player to properly assume his role.

The bottom gif clearly shows that there's something going on with the communication/lack of trusting the other guys to do their jobs on Defense.

Maybe it's just one play, but these guys have been together long enough now to have full trust in each other. Soon as you try and do your job, as well as somebody elses, that's when the chaos happens and dudes are running wide open on you everywhere.
