Nick Foles

Eagles pick up the option on Foles. He can pay 2/3 million and become a FA

So apparently the Eagles are expected to franchise him if he buys out and becomes a FA. Yeah I'm not giving up draft picks and signing him to a major deal

24million no thanks

So 24 million minimum. Can’t even sign him to an extension and have to give up a minimum of a 3rd rounder (most likely more).

Yeaaaaa.... No.

Not anywhere near certain that he's gonna be franchised, just what Rapsheet said

Lol, I hope this bites them in the [BLEEP].

Only way I would do it is if it's a late round pick

Huh? You wouldn't give a 3rd rounder for a SB MVP? Could be a top 10 QB with us and few more weapons

Not on top of the big contract, did you forget all of our conversations already? Must be rough getting old.

If you truly believed he is a top 10 QB, you would do the trade.

Well you already wanted to give him 100 million over 4 years so I didn't think one of our two 3rds rounders would mean much.

With Foles we'd be the 2nd best team in the league , surely that's worth a 3rd rounder? We can sign him to a longer term deal after

There always has to be a limit, one thing I've always respected about Dave is he has always set a limit on a player.  Some were mad because Dave had a limit for Oliver Vernon and he didnt go over his limit, he has done that with a few other players as well.  Always have to have a limit on what you would give for a player.  The big contract is enough imo.  I'm not the type to trade away draft picks.  You would, but not me

90% of the time your 3rd rounder isn't a Yannick level player.

Would you give a 5th for Foles? Surely someone who would make us the 2nd best team would be a lot more valuable than that , only 30 years old too.

I much prefer Foles, but wouldn't be surprised if they go a cheaper route like Taylor or Flacco. Maybe Eli after the draft.

Unless they are intentionally tanking or retooling the offense to Bortles-proof it for a one last year, I see a vet as their answer to get back on the winning path this season.

IMO, the Ravens season with a young QB developing late season is the best we can expect from a rookie. But I do think those chances are slim. That's why I prefer a vet not named Bortles.

Here is something to think about. If he is franchised, you have an out after 1 season. So essentially you are paying a 3rd pick to test out Foles. If he falls on his face, you have a shot at the 2020 draft class. It would probably take a 3rd to move up and ensure Jaguars get Haskins as well.

So this all comes down to how well the Jaguars scout Haskins and Foles and who they think has the best upside.

Trade the #7 overall pick for foles with no hesitation.

That makes no sense whatsoever.

Yes I would give a 5th for Foles.  Every 3rd round pick isnt a Yannick but I dont go in to the draft thinking like that.  If you trust in you scouts and your evaluations you feel you can get that next gem

On a different note, it's pretty shady that a team which negotiates a player option into a contract is allowed to franchise the player if he uses that option. That should be against the rules.

Why not.  Most of the Jags first rounders turn out to be busts anyways. What do the jags got to lose. Get an experienced QB who was a key player in their Super Bowl run and looked good this season.  Foles to go along with maybe still can be an elite D, the window is still there for a Super Bowl run.

Yeah it doesn't make much sense to me as well, if he has an option to buy out and be a FA why giving the team the opportunity to franchise tag him even after he buys out?

Anyway, in my opinion if they franchise tag him is because they are getting multiple calls from teams interested in trading for him eventually. They are 12 millions over the cap even with McLeod who just restructured saving them 7M+ and if Foles signs the tag the cap hit would be even higher.
Foles will immediately sign the franchise tag obviously so they better have a deal in place soon enough to free the cap space from that 25M cap hit.

If other teams stay put on their positions Eagles will have to let him hit FA. If they already  have a team lined-up with a 3rd round pick for him they'll franchise tag him and trade him right away.

The franchise tag option offers an opportunity to other teams though, you basically can get a player you are still not sure you want to pay for the long term for one year at 25M (which ok is a lot but you can get out with no consequences after that) and a 3rd round pick.  It's basically a bit more expensive 5th year option.
Probably better than having to sign him to a long-term deal you can't get out of for at least 2-3 years.

I can see the Broncos doing something like this, they have two 4th round picks and 2 5th round picks. Interesting situation.
