I don't see him as starter material at all. This front office is messed up. They extend Bortles, give away a 5th round pick for Hyde then cut him, draft Taven Bryan in the first round, give Jarrod Wilson starter money when he's barely even played, cut Gipson and most likely will give Foles a big contract. Wake me when it's over.If they draft HaskinsVille.... ALL IS FORGIVEN! That would be fantastic, but it won't happen. Even then, did we purge too much off the defense to get under the cap? Wake me when it's over. 3 years $7.25 million is more than some starters make. A lot of starters. Maybe not the high end ones, but quite a few on the lower end.
We currently have $32 million in cap space, assuming about $8 million in draft picks that leaves $24 million for free agents.

Wake me when it's over. It’s low end starter money, which is exactly what Wilson is.

The player they should NOT have released was Parnell. He may not be a much more than average right tackle, but who will take his place? How can they count on Richardson based on last season? There aren't any other free agent right tackles I see them signing since Williams and James will cost too much. That leaves the draft so this may require them to take a tackle in the first couple of rounds. Taylor could be the guy, but he has struggled with his conditioning/weight. I don't think he's worth the 7th pick. Ideally, they would trade back and take Cody Ford. I just don't see much of a market to trade back unless someone falls in love with Metcalf. I just don't understand how this team has not yet learned the importance of a strong offensive line.

Wilson also signed with just 1.5 guaranteed so after this season dead money is 1M for the other 2 years so nothing to really worry about.
But yeah I'm also concerned about depth at this point and would definitely feel better knowing he'd be the 3rd guy at the S spot and to have another proven safety in the mix. That applies also to other positions (with the release of Parnell I really don't want to even think about our OL and our OL depth at the moment, although it was a given it would happen with that 6M cap). That's why I was really hoping to get 1-2 picks, even day 3, for Malik and Gipson, just some bonus ammo to try and find some more depth. . If only we didn't extend the guy with the 5th year option....It is what it is, the margin for error is really slim this time both in FA and in the draft. Funny thing about all these players being released is how so many on this board thought guys like Hyde and Jackson had trade value.

Fole's cap number would be a lot less than $20M. He'd get a signing bonus that would be prorated over the length of the contract, and likely a minimal salary in year 1. The Jags were never going to be active in free agency this year anyway. Maybe not the high end ones, but quite a few on the lower end. Nah man... lol that puts him in the range of a bunch of nobodies... Quick look at all safeties contracts, he's way down with backups and ROOKIE deal starters like Eddie Jackson and Sean Davis and Kevin Byardn (who will likely be getting a deal soon that puts him way above) He's currently the 38th highest paid Safety. (But gtd money is only 2.2 mil which essentially makes him an easy cut after only 1 season if need be) I include all safeties because some safeties aren't listed as free or strong. And it looks like the NFL is moving toward more versatile safeties that can play either or. Did we give him this money thinking he could start? Probably. But there isn't a guarantee that he is given the starting S spot opposite Harrison. We still have free agency and the draft to go through.
We all knew we'd probably have to get a veteran free agent QB this year. They're expensive. Foles will be a little more expensive because of what he did in Philly. But I don't see any other FA QB as an upgrade over Bortles.
These releases aren't shocking. Most of us all knew this was coming. Had Dareus and Campbell not restructured you know damn well they would have been released today too. LOL.
They have a lot to get done this year. Ramsey, Ngakoue and Jack will have to be resigned at some point. And they didn't draft Taven Bryan and Will Richardson last year to just continue being bench warmers. Whether they pan out or not remains to be seen but they have jobs to do and they either get it done or they don't. It's a business at the end of the day. The only release that I think threw most of us is Gipson. Because we really don't have a replacement that we mostly don't feel comfortable with currently on this roster. That doesn't mean they won't have an answer for that next week when the market officially opens for business. And I think the release of Hyde bothers most of us because we forked over a 5th RD pick for him. And quite honestly, until Fournette proves he can stay healthy and keep his [BLEEP] together on and off the field to NOT earn suspensions? It'll always be a concern. We're essentially down now to Fournette, Grant who may never be the same again, Yeldon who is more than likely walking away next week and that's basically it. RB, FS, TE and QB are now top priorities starting next week. "Trust the process" is the mantra around here. And that's all you can do really. So I'll do just that. But if they sign Foles to some overpriced deal? I don't know man.... just don't know. ![]() ![]() "What do I know of cultured ways, the gilt, the craft and the lie?
