Impressions From Training Camp Practice 7/30/19
|
While Sunday represented a bit of a disappointment insofar as my experience with the practice, today, while not the most scintillating practice, was virtually the antithesis of Sunday's workouts. For starters the bulk of the practices took place on the field closest to the stands so I could see (and hear) much much more. Furthermore, there were some "oooh" plays that were missing from Sunday's practice. I wound up with pretty decent looks at a lot of players. Hopefully, this will translate into a far more detailed and substantive report.
Today, the grid lines-running from the ten yard line to the end line in the back of the end zone-reappeared on the field today, which means there was going to be red zone work. In fact, much of the 11 X 11 work was done in that north part of the field, as was the limited 7 x 7 stuff. Here are some other observations... 1. In early drills, the OL worked with medicine balls to help develop the initial punch and heavy hands. Will Richardson initially lined up at 2nd team RG for the purposes of this drill, and worked the right side of the line at G and T throughout practice. In my first extended look at him, I have more confidence in him than I did last year. He showed good initial punch on several plays. On one nice inside run later, he had a nice down block on the DT shaded inside him, sealing him off brilliantly and allowing the RB to run right behind him for a score. Now he wasn't going against starters that I saw, and he is far from a proven commodity here. but I think anyone watching him would feel better about him being in the game than they did before today. 2. Today's starting OL was... LT-Ogbuehi LG-Norwell C-Linder RG- Cann RT Wells and the 2nd team was LT Wester LG-McDermott C-Shatley RG-Richardson RT-Taylor As I indicated above, Richardson got some snaps at RT, while rookie Bunchy Stallings got some snaps at C. 3. In more early work
4. 7 X 7 Two of the earliest "oooh" moments were provided by none other than Jalen Ramsey, who simply was not having it today. The first two plays of 7 X 7 red zone drills, Foles threw to his side, only to have Ramsey beautifully break up the passes and getting the crowd pumped. Much later in practice, Ramsey had yet another pass breakup against Foles in the red zone. To me, Ramsey played today like he had something to prove, showing a level reminiscent of 2017.
5. 11 X 11, ball on 40
Hope you enjoyed. If you have any questions, I will do what I can to answer them. Worst to 1st. Curse Reversed!

Nice job! Very informative. It's nice to see Richardson getting reps on the inside and playing well. From what I've read, Cann has struggled so far and I'm praying Richardson can beat him out at the RG spot. Cam has to be back to 100% by the start of the season, because Foles will get killed with Ogbuehi or Wester at LT. I fully believe Taylor will win the RT job by the start of the season. Quincy Williams seems like he's really making a positive impression. That's fantastic. I knew absolutely nothing about the kid, so I was skeptical, but if he can take over that WLB position, that would be great.
As always, appreciate the insight, the candor, and the breakdowns Bullseye. What do you mean by when you saw Monroe? And how do you see the WR 1-4 shaking out? Dede, Chark, Lee, and Conley? Is Cole on the bubble in your opinion?

The first time I saw Monroe in a training camp practice, it was cringe worthy. He kept getting killed inside. I would list Cole in the top four. With Lee's knee injury and his current unavailability, I can't see him being any higher than 5th at the moment. I would say Conley and Chark are the two outside guys, with Dede the slot right now. Nothing has stood out to me in that sense. But I agree with you that Richardson's development could be huge for this team, especially if he can play inside and outside. It wouldn't surprise me to see the team give him some looks on the left side. Worst to 1st. Curse Reversed!
Thanks for the information! It's always nice for someone like me, who lives way up north of Florida, to hear about the team from someone who's got ground eyes on the practices.
I'm feeling hopeful about the team this year, despite all of the aggravating issues, such as Telvin's absence and Yannick's holding out (so far). I gotta believe they're gonna show a better front and gumption throughout the season than they did last year. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
Another great breakdown. Thanks, Bullseye. The defender on that Conley reception (#24) is Quenton Meeks, BTW.
Regarding the Oliver comments and the TEs in general, I've gotten a very clear impression from the sum of DeFilippo's comments about his intent. He fully intends to employ three roles for the group. F, Y and H-Back. As it stands, Swaim is the primary Y (inline), Oliver is the primary F, (move) and the H-Back role is being determined and will likely be a committee of the whole group. O'Shaughnessy and Koyack have reportedly garnered looks there and if ether undrafted player (Colubiale and Jones) make the roster over Koyack, it will likely be to play this hybrid fullback role.
Big Thank You Bulls Eye!
Lots of information on one of the last practices as we head into preseason.

Thanks for the in depth report. One of the talkers on 1010XL this morning said Cann was being tried at center on the 2nd team. Did you notice that?

National pundits dropped our draft grades down almost solely due to that pick. Granted it's still very early, but the initial returns show the pick might work out just fine. If Williams is comparable with Telvin Smith, how good would this draft be? Worst to 1st. Curse Reversed!

Hopefully we'll continue seeing flashes that point toward such an outcome. Still lots to prove for these youngsters.
Thanks for the updates Bullseye!

Those throws to Swaim were beautiful. I know Oliver is not going to be ready at all to block, but man it’s disappointimg to see him get steamrolled. Hopefully after cuts we can pick up a decent all around TE. I can’t imagine Oliver being on the field that much other than 3rd down if he is that bad at blocking. I noticed on many of the red zone passes attacked the very back of the end zone. I wonder if that is a philosophical preference, or if Foles' accuracy emboldened these calls? Worst to 1st. One thing I forgot.
The Capers influence on the defense was apparent in terms of blitzing. There were several instances where DBs blitzed, including Ramsey on a corner blitz. The blitzes were impeccably timed. Worst to 1st. Curse Reversed!
