Some Minshew stats I found interesting..
|
Minshew Vs the blitz :
25/38 65% 396 yards 109 passer rating 10.95 AY/A Without the blitz : 105.9 passer rating 7.04 AY/A Patrick Mahomes Vs the blitz this year : 23/35 65.71% 256 yards 2 TDs 106 passer rating 8.46 AY/A Also only 12 of Minshews 121 pass attempts have come via playaction. He's 10/12 for 157 and a TD using playaction. Good enough for a 146 passer rating and 14.73 AY/A Increase the playaction attempts and the offense will be better *This is all small sample size stuff and will change over the course of a season We show less advertisements to registered users. They have improved on defense though every week. Offensively they've been up and down. Mario Addison & Brian Burns are players to keep an eye out for along with Thompson and Kuechly are on their defense. Looking at their offense though it's pretty evident that Norv likes to spread the ball out and share the wealth. They have a lot of ways to hurt you. McCaffrey being the obvious player but so far this year between Samuel, Moore and Olsen they've been pretty even with all seeing over 200 yards receiving. Good to see Minshew kicking [BLEEP] so early in his career while being faced with the blitz. That's how you win in the NFL. You have to beat the blitz. That's very encouraging. But it'll be interesting nonetheless with Flip's approach. Really hope Oliver makes his debut this year at the TE position. Really need some wiggle and speed in the mix at that position. Especially against these LB's. ![]() "What do I know of cultured ways, the gilt, the craft and the lie? I, who was born in a naked land and bred in the open sky. Minshew checked to a run presumably out of a play action or pass which wouldve put him in trouble with the blitzing player. Thing of beauty. Similar situation happened to Dalton with a blitzing Steelers linebacker. The linebacker was clearly showing a blitz, yet Dalton went ahead with the play action and got sacked as soon as he turned around from the action.
I like it. I just dont know if using more playaction will increase or decrease those numbers. The run game has to actually be working for teams to fear it. If we can keep fournette going then i agree. If not, keep calling the plays how you already are with a little more pass vs run.

A lot of studies have actually shown that the run game doesn't necessarily have to be highly effective to make playaction work. Kirk Cousins was one of the best playaction passers in the league with no run for the Redskins or Vikings in 2018 for instance. The mere act of the playaction naturally pulls the Lbs forward (10-01-2019, 04:57 PM)The Real Marty Wrote: Okay! Call Doug right away and let him know! Huh

It's only a small sample of 12 attempts but I'd wager increasing our usage from one of the lowest amounts in the league to even around average would help a lot. After his first four games he has the highest QB rating ever at 106.9 beating Dan Marino's rookie start.

Playaction is certainly more about making a defense commit personnel and formation to a run threat. Which in itself doesn't require that you are killing it in the ground game to pull it off. However, when you are breaking off runs and set up play action that way, you can absolutely witness a single play have a greater effect in terms of how much it fooled the 11 guys across from you. May not be a statistical result, but the deception is greater with potentially less pressure on a QB. The QB taking longer to get the throw off in playaction is the primary reason I give to why many teams choose not to use it more frequently. Especially when they are already down one QB on the roster.
Dudes been putting up all kinds of crazy numbers. So nice to see a QB (seem to) pan out. Especially a surprise one.
Here’s another fact: Gardner Minshew’s hand is 1 for one against hammers. Poor hammer. I hope it’s still in one piece. More than likely it’s not. I say we chip in and send the shew a new hammer he likely broke while hitting himself.
If he continues playing like this I hope the team continues to roll with him even when Foles gets healthy. I hope his good play is here to stay.,
