What do the “Next Gen Stats” say about Gardner Minshew II
|
Let me know what you think, forgot to checkout his passing chart, but this still was pretty interesting to see.

This is kind of what my perceptions has been which is that people might be getting a little bit too excited over 15. He's done some remarkable things as a rookie which is great but it's important to remember that compared to the best of the best he's got *a lot* of growing to do. Time to tap the brakes a bit.
I'm condescending. That means I talk down to you.

I don't think anyone is saying he doesn't have a lot of growth to have. But at the same time, he just broke thr passer rating start for a rookie through his first 4 games. He's been wildly impressive and seems to get better every week. I don't think there's many people not expecting that growth to continue. No I get it, I get the excitement. I'm as excited as anyone but some people seem to be anointing him the Brady's replacement in the HOF already. We got a long way to go before we get there.

I haven't seen anyone go that far. He's playing as well as you could ask any rookie to play given the circumstances

I'm as excited as anyone about the prospects of this being the guy, but I'm realistic that even if he is, he will eventually have a game that leaves you scratching your head.
Signature goes here.
It's fun to be excited about the guy. It's been awhile since a Jag has generated this much excitement in general. But c'mon now, were all Jags fans. We all know this house of cards could come crashing down at any moment. So why not enjoy it while we can? If he ends up becoming a phenomenal, top-tier QB for the next decade, well this fanbase deserves it.

I think the excitement is that Minshew’s floor is very high. The general rule of thumb is that a team drafts a rookie QB high, starts them at some point first or second year and watch them suck for half the season. Minshew hasn’t sucked. We are supposed to be seeing a QB making lots of rookie mistakes and they are just not there. The ceiling is high. I think most of the issues we see with QB’s are mental. Bortles for example had a horrible wind up yes, but he actually got better.. then he lost confidence and totally regressed. This kid has ZERO confidence issues. That's what I think is so interesting about this. "Rookie mistakes" are usually dumb interceptions, lack of anticipation, no pocket awareness, no knowing the scheme etc etc We haven't seen much of that yet at all. We've seen QBs like Darnold look awful for the first half of the rookie year and then a light comes on for the 2nd half. So will Minshew get even better as he gets more used to everything, or will teams "figure him out" so to speak with much more tape to go off of (10-03-2019, 12:06 AM)JackCity Wrote:(10-02-2019, 11:39 PM)Corriewf Wrote: I think the excitement is that Minshew’s floor is very high. I’ve thought about that but I’m not sure you can figure out a QB like Minshew because his approach is so simple. Ok that sounds stupid, but hear me out. He doesn’t seem to have a real favorite receiver, he just seems to throw to whoever is open and he throws accurate. He hit what, 9 different receivers against the Broncos. You can’t say just look for him to throw to Chark most of the game. You can’t make him throw inaccurate because the guy throws beamers under extreme pressure. Only way to beat a guy like that is to lock down every target on the field, which is damn near impossible to do all game. This is why Brady has been so tough to beat for so many years.

It not like the RG3/Cam early days where they had to figure out how to stop their running attack and whatnot. Minshew just makes plays from the pocket and has that pretty much unteachable ability to create something out of nothing. There's not a ton to "figure out," he's just good. His main traits are making good decisions and high level accuracy, there aren't many ways to scheme that way away from someone. Also he's destroying teams when they blitz too. The best gameplan is probably just to squat down on everything and make him beat you deep but the issue there is A) We have arguably the fastest WR group in the league and B) he's shown enough deep ball touch to make that hurt you. Anyway, I'm sure more flaws will come to the surface as he has his bad games, but for now everything looks good. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
The play at 1:55 impressed me so much. To lose the ball, grab it and throw it as quickly as he did. It just shows how quick his decision making is. He sees the field and drops dimes anywhere he needs to. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve sat screaming at the screen, “ he’s wide open, throw the [BLEEP] ball”, for other quarterbacks... not Minshew. This is gonna be a fun fun ride.

It is fun to see someone read the defense and make plays. We have been offense starved forever. Bad games are going to happen but it is good to see a strong foundation. We will see if the hard work and dedication are there. No annointed stuff yet just a nice fun ride. I hope the hype doesn't get to him but he seems like an easy going guy.
Edit Let me add that the receivers are all young as well. They are working hard as well We haven't had dynamic receivers either.

He's a football genius with enough physical tools to do the job. That's a Brees like combination.

Rookie luck? What a dumb statement.....
Luck is where hard work and preparation meet opportunity ......that's what most people blindly call luck. The thing I'm really excited about is this young man is only going to get better. Plus he's staying the down to earth , appreciative, just a guy from Mississippi ....that he is. He's exactly what we thought we were getting with BB5 only from the very start. What more could a Jaguar's fan ask for?
Because Jaguars is our mantra

I quickly started hearing the dude in the video cite statistics as "indicative" of some trend when all they did was make it clear he wasn't taking the body of work as seen on tape into consideration.
I find that folks that value stats over film can make any argument they want with just the numbers, and I have no interest in that. It's a flawed perspective. You have to know how those numbers happened on the grass to speak about them with validity. I got the sense early on this kid doesn't have that perspective. What was this dude trying to imply about Minshew anyway?
