Looking forward to this weekend.  After 3 straight weeks without a day off I'm ready for a break.  No internet, no TV, no cellphone.  I'm looking forward to some "tractor time" as well as cutting and splitting a bunch of wood.  We have a bunch of Oak and Hickory trees that we cut down and need to cut up into firewood.  It's a lot of hard physical work, but doing it in the middle of the woods is relaxing to me.  I'm on my own schedule.  I might just take some of the time to shoot some guns, build a fire in the evening and sleep in the next morning.  No distractions, no email, no people...  it's paradise to me.

The other thing that I may do if I get around to it is do some maintenance on my tractors.  Again it's something that I enjoy doing and it's in the middle of nowhere.

That sounds awesome. I love manual labor like that. It makes you feel alive. I even like the sore muscles the next day because it reminds me that I did something useful.

That sounds relaxing.  I just recently started to split my own wood.  There’s something about getting back to the basics that makes one feel good.  Heck, I’d even offer my services

Do you have a splitter, or do you use a maul and wedges?

Whew...dodged a bullet.  The way this lady's Facebook post was worded it sounded like she was giving her Goldens away because she was moving.  She is moving...but she's also a breeder and was selling them for $800 apiece.  Actually a good price for purebread Goldens, but my wife was expecting to 'adopt' them and not actually buy them.

I’m technically a millennial.  But I try to do things the old school way.  I’ve been using a maul.

I have probably four cords of wood in back of my garage.  Most of it needs to be split, if it is usable at all.  I need to weed out all of the rotten crap and get rid of it to see what I actually have left back there.  This is all wood that I got when Irma took out 7 big oak trees in the back yard.  I've already burned a ton of it but it's becoming a nuisance because I'm having trouble getting to anything that is potentially 'good' because of all of the bad/rotten stuff.  That, and I've seen a bunch of snakes back there so I know those little bastards are hiding in the pile.

I have a hard time finding decent wood as well. (Jokes galore in that one)  Occasionally, at work, we will do small tree jobs.  But nothing to amount to much.  That is if it’s even a wood I want to burn.  I trimmed my oak back quite a bit last spring and split what I could and seasoned it.  Tried to burn some the other day.  It’s good, but could use a little more time.  I store it off the ground as much as possible.  The snakes are a real issue.  Even then I look really well before I grab any.

I’m tempted to just go to this place somewhere over in nocatee/PV not quite sure, that already has split and seasoned oak.  But, that leaves some of the “fun” and manliness out of it.

Snakes, in general, usually don't bother me.  I'm no snake expert, but I've seen the shape of the heads on a few of them peeking out of the wood pile and I know they are venomous.  I'm more worried about the dogs poking around over there and getting bit.

You know anybody that would help me root through the pile and haul off the bad stuff?  Hell, I don't mind rooting through the pile on my own but I need to have somebody haul off the bad stuff.  I mean, I'd pay or work out a trade in some wood...assuming I still have enough 'good stuff'.  It's an enormous pile.  I was actually thinking about going through it this weekend since it's going to be cool and the snakes shouldn't be as active.

I pile up the rotten stuff as well as all of the small branches/brush and burn it all when I can.  I usually wait until after a real good rain and when the wind is down.

If I wasn't in a neighborhood (no HOA fortunately) I would have no issue doing that.  But this rotten stuff tends to smolder and would 'burn' forever...if you can even call it burning.  And the amount of rotten wood that I have back there I just don't have the time for.  I just want the good stuff that I can split for my firepit.

That’s still in St Johns county then, right?   I’d be interested.  However, I’m told that in St. John’s, if you call up republic services (I think that is who we have) they’ll do a one time pick up/ yr using their truck with a grapple on it.  That would be of no charge to you as long as you can get it to the street.  I’d call them to verify or set it up.

If I’m mistaken, and you’re still wanting it hauled off I’d be interested in exchange for some of the good stuff.  I do not own a dump trailer, which sounds to be more appropriate for the amount that you have.  Although, one could be rented. But I do have an open utility trailer we use for work. It May take a few trips to the dump.  Which they will charge by the load.  They used to go by weight, but they changed it up.  I’d call the landfill and inquire about that as well. Last time they charged 50/ load.  But I can’t remember if that was just my truck or if we had stuff in the trailer.  Probably the same phone call.

Yeah, they'll come pick it up.  But, from prior experience, it could sit there for weeks before they come by and then the chances are pretty good that they'll [BLEEP] up the ground when they are scooping it up.  Plus the [BLEEP] is going to break into a million pieces because it is so rotten so I'd be doubling my cleanup work.  Cleaning up the pile then cleaning up the mess that is left out front.  That's why I was looking into people hauling it away.  The other thing is that it is in a bad location.  It would have to be moved out of the back yard and into a truck by hand.  Because of the location of the septic system's drain field I'd be a bit leery of driving a truck into that area of the back yard.

And yes, that is St. Johns County.

That 140 for a truck full of seasoned and split oak is looking really good right now, lol.

I can see why it’s sat so long now.  I’d still like to help out if I could.   How far from the wood is the street or where the truck would be? How big are the rounds? How many would fit in a wheelbarrow?

Seems like it would take a nice chunk of time just trying to load it up.

Fortunately it was so long ago now that I barely remember my ex-wife's name at this point. Sadly her name is also a casual term of endearment so I have to be careful when talking to my wife if generalities or it might creep in.

Ding, ding, ding, ding.

The only saving grace would be finding a bunch of good stuff.  I think/hope it's about half and half...which would be a lot.

By the way, there's a guy on Fruit Cove Rd. that sells firewood as well.  Not sure of the address, nor what his stockpile looks like at this point, however.
