Caldwell appreciation thread

Whatever your gripe is about Caldwell, and I’m sure there are a few, just keep this in mind:
https://twitter.com/daverichard/status/1...45250?s=21 https://twitter.com/spotrac/status/12558...89440?s=21 Also traded Gabbert for a 6th. And was able to get two 1st and a 3rd for disgruntled liar baby Ramsey.

He's not a terrible General Manager. But he's not one of the top General Managers neither. It's hard to trade Newton when you know he has a laundry list of injuries that directly impact his ability to play Quarterback. And the Bengals were going to cut Dalton regardless as it was a guarantee that Burrow would be their selection.
Tricking the Bears into trading for Foles makes a lot of sense because they were stupid enough to pass up on Mahomes and Watson in favor of Trubisky who played against virtually nobody in college and had one year of production that paled in comparison to Mahomes numbers and Watson's ability to win in the clutch. You still are what your record says you are. And since 2013 this team has played like a giant bucket of horse piss. 6 out of the last 7 seasons of football have produced double digit losses. And we're one of the worst teams at home. [BLEEP] Caldwell. How about some Fan Appreciation instead? How about some Season Ticket Holder appreciation instead? ![]() "What do I know of cultured ways, the gilt, the craft and the lie? I, who was born in a naked land and bred in the open sky. Caldwell is our best GM maybe in Franchise History
There I said it Coughlin gets negative 10 points for his job here recently That goes to show you how bad our GMs have been Buuuuut Caldwell has done pretty exceptional with drafting players who contribute imo , I think we’ve been lacking far too much in culture and coaching The only real bad terrible pick was probably Bortles We had good players, they just turned out to be huge nut cases
Yeah, all credit to Caldwell, it had nothing to do with Foles winning SB!
I wish Khan realizes we have the best GM in football and gives him a 10 year extension!! ![]() ![]() (04-30-2020, 01:10 PM)Caldrac Wrote: He's not a terrible General Manager. This puts Caldwell in an objective context. Caldwell deserves blame for hiring Bradley and draftingJoeckel and Bortles, though in his defense, no coach could have posted winning seasons with the talent he inherited in 2013. But Caldwell has generally drafted well. To me, player retention is his biggest shortcoming. Worst to 1st. Curse Reversed!
(04-30-2020, 03:14 PM)Bullseye Wrote: http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-draft/0ap3...2020-draft Just fyi, Caldwell didn't want to hire Bradley. Khan interviewed Gus and just fell in love; Caldwell wanted to hire Greg Roman (his former college roommate iirc) who had experience with a run first offense and we still had MJD & no QB at the time. Joeckel was a bust but in hindsight that entire 2013 draft was talent starved, I also think that Tony Khan's analytics handcuffs the front office at times when he gets tunnel visioned on "his guys", Tony Khan believed that having a RT in Joeckel across from Monroe at LT would give Gabbert more time to throw (2.1 seconds average in 2012; and when Gabbert had 2.6 seconds to throw his stats/passer rating was significantly better) Bradley also demanded a SS be drafted high bc he needed his Kam Chancellor 2.0 to run his Seattle Cover-3 defense. Caldwell stated in post draft interviews that Darius Slay was the top guy on his board but was railroaded into picking Cyprien (reading between the lines). As bad as the Bortles pick was in hindsight, his other picks that draft were pretty good: Allen Robinson, Telvin Smith in the 5th. His 2016 draft was stellar: Jalen Ramsey, Myles Jack, Yannick Ngakoue, & Sheldon Day (until Coughlin cut him in 2017 bc "numbers game" and he went on to be a key player for the Niners DL in their run to the SB this past year). Then TC took over and ruined the roster/momentum that was built (there's no chance Caldwell selects Fournette top 5 or Taven Bryan at all if he's at the helm). With TC gone I thought Caldwell had a good draft this year although obviously it's beyond premature as they haven't played a game. I think Caldwell has earned this year to see what he can do; as a GM he wasn't given his choice of a HC to hire initially, and then TC was brought in essentially handcuffing his ability to GM, and even now he inherited Marrone from Coughlin & still hasn't gotten to pick "his" coach. Not to mention most of the talent DC acquired Coughlin ran out of town with his draconian ways. Caldwell may not be Ozzie Newsome but he's miles better than Gene Smith & Shack Harris were. I'm not super angry he was retained bc he did kind of get a raw deal here with all the chaos that's gone on since he was hired.
Championship Formula:
1) Draft Trevor Lawrence! 2) Play good physical Defense! 3) Keep 91% of the roster healthy! 4) ??? 5) Blank #2 6) CHAMPIONSHIP!!!

Ramsey fell in his lap, he had to do nothing, not only that he drafted a CB that became a diva and a cancer. Jack was awful this past season and he is never been great, only above average. Ngakoue is overrated, can only pass rush, no team was willing to trade for him. Sure he is a good player but far from great. TC ruined the moment/momentum? hahahaha 2017 doesn't happen without TC. You wanna look at the FA's Caldwell signed before TC arrived? Like I said... Caldwell has never made a mistake, poor guy has never being able to choose his coach. We should start over, give him a 4 year extension and let him choose the HC and QB too because he's never really had a chance. You guys really deserve this team. You defended Gene Smith, JDR, Bradley and now Caldwell. I am a fan, not a cheerleader. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
(04-30-2020, 03:14 PM)Bullseye Wrote: http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-draft/0ap3...2020-draft I somewhat agree. In hindsight yes hiring Bradley, drafting Joeckel and Bortles were mistakes, but at the time everyone seemed to like the moves. There are 10 kinds of people in this world. Those who understand binary and those who don't.
Bortles was the right move in that draft class at that position. Manziel was in and out of the NFL. Bridgewater was a game manager at best but he did some good things with competent coaching in New Orleans and will have a chance to prove he's still a capable starter in Carolina. Carr probably only has this year remaining with the Raiders to prove himself before Gruden and Davis start eyeing someone else. And Garoppolo ended up having something those four other guys needed and that was time to sit on the bench, learn and have a competent offensive mind to groom you.
Bortles could have been a better QB had we had the appropriate coaching staff in place to develop him. Gus Bradley wasn't up to par to manage that position. Let alone a raw talent like Bortles who had all the gifts and similar skill set of a Ben Roethlisberger but lacked the coaching of a Bruce Arians and toughness of a Bill Cowher to make him better. Which I think Bortles himself even hinted at about Bradley. That he actually wanted, needed and encouraged a coach to ride him into the dirt. Bradley was more like a Mr. Roger's type. Which is odd because I thought he was tougher in Seattle as the D.C. That entire 2013's first round draft class is tough. Joeckel was a mistake. But he did have a good reputation blocking for Manziel at Texas A&M. In hindsight. Lane Johnson or Ezekiel Ansah would have been the better selections. But that entire first round hasn't really produced anything significant player wise. Outside of DeAndre Hopkins (who NOBODY had pegged as a top five talent in the MSM) and Travis Frederick who just retired at the age of 31 in Dallas. It didn't yield much for most teams. ![]() "What do I know of cultured ways, the gilt, the craft and the lie? I, who was born in a naked land and bred in the open sky. Damnnnn tell me how you really feel hahahahah. There's only 32 GM jobs in the NFL, they're not easy to get and they're not all ideal situations. "2017 doesn't happen without TC" I think it does, Bouye & Calais said that TC was A reason they signed here but lets be honest, we offered them both $2 million per year more than their next best offer, they would've came regardless $$ talks. And yea, Caldwell signed Malik Jackson, Chris Ivory & Tashaun Gipson in 2016 who were 3 big pieces of that 2017 squad that made the run, like are you for real?!? And Jalen "fell into his lap" yea well he still made the pick and didn't pull a Gene Smith Tyson Alualu type pick to pass on him or a Giants Daniel Jones type move. Jack was scapegoated more than he deserved last year, he flat out BALLED in 2017 & 2018. And Yannick may be acting sophomoric but he's far from overrated/"can only pass rush" he's an average run defender not a poor one, and people who "can rush the passer" period in this league are very VERY hard to find. don't forget we went about 10-15 years without a guy who could do that consistently until Yan & Calais came on board.

No one is giving Caldwell a pass for picks like: Bortles, Marqise Lee, TJ Yeldon, AJ Cann etc. & yes it's pretty obvious that if you're signing somewhere you're going to toss praise to the guy who just gave you a contract that set you up for life (TC), they also said in the same breath that the other offers they received weren't as appealing both in terms of $$ as well as fit, location, team aspirations etc. So Gipson plays well, you just acknowledged that, but you're going to paint his entire stint here based on one play in the AFCCG? I fail to see how signing an above average player in free agency is a knock against Caldwell and how that fits into your narrative that Caldwell couldn't sign any good free agents pre TC/2017. You also just flat out ignored Malik Jackson, Sen'Derrick Marks (2 DT's that get 8+ sacks each in a season are homerun signings, credit where credit is due), Chris Ivory .. like he's signed some great players that you're just ignoring. "You guys really deserve this team" ... then go find another team to root for if all you want to do is whine, don't let the door hit you on the way out. No where did I say Caldwell deserves the executive of the year award, or that everything he does is roses; I think all things considered he's done a decent job and has earned another year to show what he can do running the entire show.

Find another team? why? because I am not stupid/blind and support every person on this team when it is obviously their fault we are in this state? Sounds like you love being pathetic and have this team in the bottom every year, don't mind me, keep enjoying, you have at least 2 more years to go. OMG Caldwell has drafted Pro bowlers, well, he better, since he drafts top 10 every year. Yeah, you deserve this pathetic team. Come on, remind me of this team winning record with Caldwell as the GM, with and without Coughlin. Yep, that's your hero right there. I am a fan, not a cheerleader. Soooooo many excuses. He's been here 8 years now, that's long enough that he would have overcome all of the excuses if he was actually any good. Instead, he's had the most high picks of any GM in history and has spent more FA $ than any GM in history and in return he has rewarded us with what is the consensus worst team in football.
Dude is a master class hypnotist I'll give him that.
