In Depth look at TE’s through the years
|
I wanted to take a look at our Tight End numbers across the board and here is what I came up with. We have been pretty lack luster to say the least.
I’m just gonna dive right in to it... The Jaguars have had a total of 33 Tight Ends from 1995 to present day to collect a stat. Of those 33 players only 17 have scored a TD. A 125 total touchdowns have been scored by a TE. Lewis - 33 Brady - 13 Mitchell - 11 Damon Jones - 11 George Wrighster - 9 Julius Thomas - 9 Zach Miller - 4 Clay Harbor - 4 O’Shaughnessy - 3 Nic Jacobs, Ben Koyak, Brian Jones, Richard Angulo, Derek Brown, Danny Noble, Nick O’Leary, ASJ all have 1 TD each. The Jaguars have had a Tight End go over 100 yards in a single game just 5 times. Kyle Brady is the only TE to do it twice. The most receiving yards ever recorded in a single game by a Jaguar TE: Mitchell 161 yards on 10 catches Brady 138 yards on 10 catches Thomas 116 yards on 9 catches Brady 111 yards on 8 catches Lewis 103 yards on 7 catches We’ve only sent 1 player to the Pro Bowl as a TE which was Lewis in 2010. Statistically, the player with the best year was Kyle Brady back in the year 2000. He had 64 receptions for 729 yards and 3 TD’s, however Lewis had his best year in 2010 where he had 58 receptions for 700 yards and 10 TD’s. The most receptions in a game by a Jaguar TE was set by 2 players. Brady and Mitchell. The top 10 TE receiving yards list for a Jaguar is: 1. Lewis 4502 2. Brady 2500 3. Mitchell 2091 4. Wrighster 850 5. Thomas 736 6. Harbor 730 7. Damon Jones 550 8. O’Shaughnessy 516 9. Zach Miller 470 10. Rich Griffith 296 Top 10 in receptions by a Jaguar TE: 1. Lewis 375 2. Brady 241 3. Mitchell 191 4. Wrighster 94 5. Thomas 76 6. Harbor 64 7. O’Shaugnessy 52 8. Miller 45 9. Damon Jones 41 10. Derek Brown and Ben Koyak 25 Only 4 TE have 10 or more touchdowns in a CAREER as a Jaguar: Lewis 33 Brady 13 Mitchell 11 Damon Jones 11 Wrighster and Thomas both have just 9 each. The longest reception ever by a Jaguars TE: Lewis 63 Miller 62 Noble 62 Harbor 59 Yoder 56 Mitchell 45 Brady 41 Of the 33 Tight Ends to ever play for the Jaguars, 16 never scored a TD. Lewis has a career catch percentage of 57% Of the 5 times a Jaguars TE went over the 100 yds receiving mark, only once did we win the game. That was in the year 2000 when Brady posted 10 catches for 138 yards at Dallas. The other 4 times we lost the game. A good receiving TE could come in here and own every TE record. The craziest stat to me is there has only been 4 TE’s in team history with 10 TDs or more. Thought you guys might like this. We show less advertisements to registered users. If we can get someone to play at the level Lewis did, i would be happy with it. Don't need a full blown allstar, just need someone that plays pretty good.
That should be a very short post. Along the lines of "Great Moments in Effective Soviet Supply Chain Management", "The New Catalog of Late Model Cuban Automobiles", and "Maine's Extraordinary Chickens."

Pretty bad when Tony and Travis from.KC have more yards than all 33 combined lol

The worst part about this entire TE thing is the fact that most successful teams in NFL history have TEs that play a significant role in their offense. Just look at the recent SB winners (KC, Pats, Eagles) as well as some of the great NFL dynasties.
I always thought Reggie Williams would have made for a great receiving tight end.
It is truly odd that multiple regimes, GMs, and coordinators in Jacksonville have done so little to prioritize the TE position in the passing game collectively over 2.5 decades.
Granted there have been fleeting moments of "tried and failed" approaches but the receiving TE in Jax has been largely swept under the rug compared to other offensive areas of focus.
Oliver = a combination of Gronk/Graham/Gates/Gonzalez/Witten
Shenault is the fastest man on earth CJ will be better than Deion Chaisson will break the rookie record for sacks Who cares if Minshew plays bad? Luton is the next Brady Bart = Boselli I am a fan, not a cheerleader.

I agree. It has been swept under the rug too many times. We brought Kyle Brady in as a free agent back in 1999 and then waited 7 years to draft Lewis in 2006. And Lewis so below average in the passing game outside of his Pro Bowl season. Teams like KC, Patriots, Eagles, seem to always have a good TE. We have been putrid compared to those teams. Pete Mitchell is probably the best TE to play for the Jags, at least as a receiver. Both Brady and Lewis were better at blocking, though.
Zach Miller was a great TE - for the Chicago Bears. Feel terrible for his poor luck with injuries. I loved what I saw out of O'shaughnessy last year prior to injury, and I think a healthy Oliver and Eifert will be great complements. Despite us never having a world-class TE, I'm pretty stoked about this year's possibilities, including our late round picks and UDFA. Interested to see who makes the cut.

Great post. When I read the thread title, my thought was, "Well that shouldn't take up much space." But you did a really nice job with it. It's amazing how little production we've gotten out of that very important position over the history of our franchise.

I agree 100 percent. Marcedes Lewis was a great blocking TE but man he dropped some passes early on in his career that I never forgave him for. Especially the wide open in the back of the endzone. But Pete Mitchell was by far the best receiving TE we’ve ever had. That catch he had in our first playoff game up in Buffalo was amazing. We show less advertisements to registered users. Pat Freiermuth will be the next great tight end in the NFL and the Jaguars should find a way to select him in the next draft. If college football is totally cancelled, I believe he would declare for the 2021 draft. Kyle Pitts is another option, but he is not a complete player like Freiermuth. While the Jaguars will likely have two top 15 picks in this draft, they could probably get him with their 2nd first rounder. He and a healthy Oliver could give the Jaguars the best tight end situation in the league- a nice change from their previous history at this position.
The last great TE to play in JAX was Frank Wychek. How many [BLEEP] TDs did that guy score against the Jaguars? Always open in the back of the endzone. Maddening....

That has to be last in the NFL but I didn’t feel like researching it. Heck, Lewis played for 11 years as a Jaguar and mustard just one 100 yard game. We show less advertisements to registered users. Huh? What are you going on about now. Everybody knows te`s don`t have 100 yd games. Thats silly talk.
I have refused to click on this thread because I knew it would be depressing. Holy [BLEEP] it delivered.
I'm really surprised by the numbers by Julius Thomas. I didn't think he played enough here to be even that high on this "list". God we're so overdue. I really thought we had something in Zach Miller but, he never could get it going here. Glad that cat can still walk. I'm wondering if how sad this list is is more of an indictment on the QB's they've had. ![]() |
