Jaguars coaching candidates? (merged coaching threads)

statement from the Jaguars website

January 4, 2021

"I am committed and determined to deliver winning football to the City of Jacksonville. Realizing that goal requires a fresh start throughout our football operations, and with that in mind I spoke this morning with Doug Marrone to express my gratitude for his hard work over the past four seasons as the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars. I'll always appreciate Doug's passion, grit and class, and I'm confident he will enjoy success in the next chapter of his career. As the search for our new general manager continues, now the quest begins to find a head coach who shares my ambition for the Jacksonville Jaguars and our fans, whose loyalty and faith are overdue to be rewarded."

Quote from Albert Breer shared on a BCC article:

"Jacksonville Jaguars: Doug Marrone said after his team’s 15th straight loss that he’d meet with owner Shad Khan on Monday. The Jaguars’ flirtation with ex-Ohio State and Florida coach Urban Meyer has been going on for weeks now. Will Meyer jump? This is a pretty unique opportunity, given that he’d get a boatload of 2021 picks, cap space and Trevor Lawrence with the job, and it’s in an area geographically that Meyer is familiar with. I think he’ll say no, but I think it will be hard for him to turn it down, and he is taking the idea seriously (I’m told he’s worked on potential staffing). And if he doesn’t take the job? I’ve heard the Jags would hire a coach first, and Bills OC Brian Daboll was one name that’s been linked to the job."

He seems to think Meyer would turn down the job and our next target is Daboll

I don’t know Dabolls resume outside of the Bills.

Where was he before and did he have success there?

Also, for what it’s worth, the Khans really do like Marrone, and the job he did to keep the team engaged through a really tough year. I’ve heard they ruminated on keeping him and giving the next GM a year to evaluate him if they can’t land Meyer. I don’t know if they’d actually go through with that, though.”

To me, the important thing is to get the talent acquisition and retention corrected.  That means GM.  GM GM GM.  That's the key to success.

Yep, this. A GM should also pick the HC he feels can get the most out of the team he puts together.
I'm condescending. That means I talk down to you.

Pick a GM.... and then let them pick their own Head Coach is the natural order of things.

I wouldn't mind Daboll at all.

He has been around the league for a while.

He helped to develop Josh Allen, and know what the Bills did to put Weapons around him, and it would weaken a conference foe.

If I were to go the young offensive wunderkind, I'd go Brady from Carolina, who was LSU's offensive coordinator when they won the Nat'l champinship.

I'm open to whoever our next HC and GM are, as there are no absolute sure shots. The guys who are the hot names are either unproven as head coaches, or the teams they built were far from perfect as GMs.

We have no idea if Daboy or Bienemy will make competent HC. Sure they're good coordinators but HC is a different beast with different duties. There's a long line of hot coordinators who flopped at being HC.

There's a line of GMs who seemingly built SB teams but did they really or did they just happen to have a good QB? Strangley at their next gig they don't have the same success. Is it due to not having the same QB?

This is all chance. The chance of the right GM, HC, and QB being in the same place and on the same page.

Here's a good (albeit quick) breakdown. A few ups and downs early, but his most recent stops have been successful.

Khan clarified that after Coughlin left he had to approve roster expenditures.  Sounds to me that he was not meddling in Caldwell's personnel decisions, but rather taking part in the cap management that Coughlin had damaged.

Was this press conference not aired on Jaguars.com? I was waiting for an alert on my phone but never got one.

Just saw a quick video of Kahn on The Aftermath on NFLN and he said that we were in "Cap Hell" which isn't a lie. I'm assuming that was his reasoning.

He also said something along the lines of "A Franchise QB is something that has always eluded the Jags and now we get the chance to go pick one" which to me screams we are drafting Lawrence (which should be obivous)

My 6 year olds know we're drafting Trevor Lawrence (if he declares)

Not a fan of the rumors Khan wants to hire the Coach first, then the GM.  Let the GM hire his own coach.

It depends on the coach. If a coach has a great relationship with a GM candidate, then I am fine with it.
