This isn't a coincidence.  The Incident @ the Capital accelerated events, but the real trigger was the results from the GA runoffs.  As of Jan 20 the Republicans will loose their majority in the Senate, and thus will no longer control any committee chairmanships in either house of congress.  That means not only is the GOP powerless to stop legislation or presidential appointments, we can no longer call hearings or issue subpoenas.  There is no aspect of the Federal government that can hold Big Tech accountable for silencing the opponents of the Democratic Party.  In fact, Execs from Facebook and Twitter have become part of Joe Biden's transition team and are expected to join his administration.

The ironic thing is, breaking facebook into smaller companies is likely beneficial to the shareholders...
But the board wants inside access to government leadership for its own sake. Just for the prestige of it. and that's what they're getting.  And they wouldn't get that as much post breakup.

Pretty sure I saw twitter compared to a bakery in an earlier post. That was also apples to dump trucks.

You guys really don't have a good argument here. Social media functions like a utility. Congress awarded Tech companies the same privileges and protections as the phone companies because they were supposed to function in a similar manner. Then, after getting those protections, they started censoring speech based on ideas they don't like. That is not their job. They are editorializing now, and should now be subject to libel. If they can say, we censored these lies, then they should be able to be sued for lies they are not censoring. It's that simple. The simple truth is that social media is the new town square and should function like a public utility. Period. Please stop pretending like you don't understand this. They should only be able to restrict speech that is already approved by the government (which is controlled, for now, by the people). It's ludicrous that you guys even try to defend this [BLEEP]. It only comes from a place of privilege, to use terms you guys seem to embrace.

Most people call them loopholes, but yes they exist.
All of those big companies find ways to assign income to other countries, exaggerate expenses, and things like that to make it look like they made no profit.
It would be pretty hard to crack down on this.
