The rules are pretty much spelled out for you in the NFL and followed.

The rules are spelled out in college football also - Meyer just chose to ignore them as long as his team was winning.  Him being on the sideline will make it difficult to cheer for this team - not that I won't, I'll just want to throw something at my big screen anytime they show him on the sidelines.  Maybe I'll have to get season tix again, cause I can't see the coach from where I was sitting lol.
Just asking, are you a Gator fan?

In ATL he gets to be the actual GM, here he is the puppet for Meyer who has to do all of the boring procedural crossing the Is and dotting the Ts junk.

As long as the GM is not Baalke I can live with it, even if that means Rick Smith or Pioli.

You're all outdated...from what I've read it's not even odd or uncommon to hire a coach first. Like I said you farts are talking out your bleeps and your bumpkin mentalities are the reason the Jags have been a laughing stock. It's the BUMPKIN mentality of this town!!!

The NFL is a big boy game and business, things change fast.

So what Urban may only be here 3-5 years. Wish him success and play your position...fan.

What is this modern stuff?

Next you'll tell us that those who argue about 3-4 or 4-3 really don't know anything.

Other teams are happy we're hiring him because it means they'll actually get a serious candidate.

Lol, you really can't make this [BLEEP] up. Jaguars finally have a bright future and decide to hitch their wagon to a horse with no legs.

Are you really making  the argument that - Because of how the fans talk out their [BLEEP], we are a laughing stock? Hm. I didn't know the fans hired Dave Caldwell, who gutted the roster then hired Gus Bradley, who then led to Doug Marrone. Man, I also didn't know we picked Bortles AND extended him after several mediocre seasons, while not extending deserving core players. Then brought in an IR QB named Foles for a stupid amount of money(thanks Tom...). Thanks for clearing that up.

https://www.crainscleveland.com/kevin-kl...y-start-gm also there is this.

It certainly is a growing trend...  But all of the sustained success stories highlighted in the article all have top 10 or better QBs minus the 49ers. Even with Jimmy G healthy, SF looked bad this year and only have 1 great season to show for it so far.

So yeah, if you have an absolute stud QB, it'll work.. Like mostly anything will work. How many OC/DCs have come out of New England or Seattle to HC, only to be complete bums elsewhere? It's almost like a certain QB was carrying those teams and elevated the entire team.

The browns (referring the article) are absolutely stacked with talent. So, lets see how they are doing in a few years when the new GM has to make some picks and not stumble into the likes of Landry/OBJ/Chubb/Hunt/Baker.

TL; DR - Hope Lawrence is a top tier QB or we're more than likely screwed.

The only GM choice worse than Baalke would be Ryan Grigson.

You kind of have to cheat with recruiting the way college football is set up.

In the NFL, the recruiting part is not really an issue since you have the draft and salary cap. Tanking is really the only thing you can control and that is perfectly legal under the rules.  Now cheating is possible in other ways (see Belicheck) but not in the acquiring players part.
I actually don't mind "bending" the rules when it comes to recruiting, it's the total lack of accountability for the players/coaches that were actually committing crimes that bothers me.  Not that I want a Coughlin type of coach, but it makes me wonder what the locker room will be like.  I guess we might still have Ramsey and Yannick if Meyer had been our coach...

I've come to the conclusion that none of the names really is a slam dunk. They all have baggage. Some are not really play callers, others are inexperienced etc.

Urban Meyer is a well known (CFB) coach and as such he's a superstar. This isn't Matt Rhule. The only college coach that could match Meyer is Saban.

He could fail but so could all the Bienemys or Dabolls or Bradys too. At least we'll be in for a hell of a ride. Btw, I'm confident Meyer(and Lawrence) will  make us much more interesting to national audiences.

I think he's a scumbag but he's going to be our scumbag.

Nope - actually I'm more of an "anti-Gator" person.  I thought it was comical when Meyer left UF - the way some Gator fans complained about him allowing players to do whatever they wanted, but only after he left the program with the cupboard bare.  Too many of them didn't have an issue with it while they were winning.  I guess I have more of an issue with it in college, since the players are still teenagers when they get to school as opposed to the NFL where they are "adults".

Best line of this entire conversation ^^

And if he wins a Super Bowl here, we'll all fall in line and think it was a great hire.  Winning can tend to make people appear less scumbaggy.

I am kinda meh on him as a coach. I want us to win, he's been a winner everywhere. Saw this on reddit. Very good background on his coaching success.

He started his head coaching career at Bowling Green. He went 17-6 in 2 years. The year before he got there, the team had gone 2-9.

He moved onto Utah. He went 22-2 in 2 years there, 10-2 in his first year was the best start to a career ever at Utah. His second year was 12-0, first undefeated season and BCS bowl appearance by a non-BCS team ever. His qb, Alex Smith, was drafted 1st overall.

Only then does he move to a school where he could recruit at a high level, winning 2 national championships at Florida, and another at Ohio State.

Will this all transfer to success at the NFL level? Maybe, maybe not. (God I hope it does). But to say his success is based solely on being a good recruiter doesn’t make a ton of sense based on how his career has gone.

This is exactly right. People don't seem to understand that the most important part of being a good recruiter is recognizing talent and that will definitely translate. It's not exactly the same obviously but it's a huge part of it.
I'm condescending. That means I talk down to you.

Welp, sounds like it's done.
One thing about it Urban has the rep, we'll see if he still has the power.
